Hi, the HP8566 and HP8568 spectrum analyzers are two different designs. Both are well described in? the HP Journals of that time. Quite impressive if you ask me...

Hi Dave
As far as I have learned, most HP YIGs are pretty similar.
Have a look at the picture here

where you can see a YIG osc with its bias board, A44. There are some pin numbers.

Does anyone have the pinout for the 5086-7267 YIG oscillator handy?
My google-fu seems to be weak today.

Re: Found a on line auction selling several HP items Oct 26 end date
LOL.. I was not trying to endorse anyone one. ?I have had good luck getting equipment from on line auctions. ?Some on this board, may be close enough to not needing anything shipped. ?
This auction has potential since the primary focus is HAM stuff. ?Someone may find the a deal.

Calvin,
does that mean the YTO is unlocked during the sweep?

On my 8566b, if the span is greater than certain MHz, the sweep source is operate in “Lock and Roll” mode - locks to the sweep start frequency then applies a ramp to roll.

I don't know about the screen flickering, but I do think the YTO loop behavior is normal. At wider spans it is not constantly phase-locked - it is driven open-loop with fairly accurate sweep current, and I think possibly re-phase-locked just at the beginning
of the sweep each time around. For wide spans, you can't resolve the small frequency error on-screen anyway, but for narrow ones, more stability is needed, so the LO is locked. It's also possible that the narrow spans instead fix the first LO and use the second
LO for sweeping - I can't recall for sure, but it should be one of those two schemes.
Definitely get the manual if you haven't already.

Hi,
I have the manual, of course :-)
But I cannot find some info about when the YTO is allowed to be unlocked.
I also have not yet managed to fix the flickering trace. Actually, 'flickering' ist not quite the right expression; it is a bit more complicated: if there is a signal on the screen and the marker is moved along the trace, the trace is slightly 'pulled'
along the frequency axis towards the direction in which the marker is moved, which looks like an unstable, flickering display if the marker is moved fast (e.g. when turning the knob rapidly). As soon as marker movement is stopped, the trace bumps back at its
former position.
However, this absolutely strange behaviour can only be observed when the span is wider than 1 MHz; in this case also the YTO unlock LED is flashing (but no warning message on the screen).
I hope I have some time tomorrow to check the tant caps. I hope it is not the YTO or a mixer which went on the blink, but I guess as long as the YTO oscillates and signals can be viewed correctly (in principle) on the screen, then the RF path seems to
be all good.

I am sorry, but just saying ..."poor or lazy reporting"... is only sugar coating the facts.
The fact is, the reporter did not confirm his story, so in fact, he (she or it) made up
some of the alleged facts.
If you make up facts, that to me, is FAKE.

Sort of:
"For shipping, we work with a local UPS franchise. They will pickup

My experience is that UPS store packing is very expensive, but also
completely ineffective at protecting the contents :(
Highly disrecommended.

Hello--
I'm offering the following HP small (palmtop) computers and accessories.
One HP Jornada 720 with one expansion base: Includes stylus and original
battery (needs replacement). This unit boots when connected to an
external power source.
Two HP Jornadas 820 (F1260A): both include original batteries: one has
a broken right-side screen hinge, the other is mechanically intact.
Both units boot when
connected to an external power source.
One HP 820 sync cable (untested).
One HP F1265 AC adaptor (12 VDC @ 3.5A) in working order (supplies
power to HP720 and HP 820.
One 16 MB Compact Flash card with HP 820 user's manual and
other files.
I'm asking $25.00 for the lot of all items, which includes USPS
Priority-mail
shipment (a $13.60 "value") for shipment to U.S. locations.
(These palmtops may have had test-and-measurement
applications, but it's unlikely. I apologize in advance to anyone who
takes umbrage at my offering these little jewels to the group.)
Question welcomed, PayPal honored.

Just to help clarify on Alexander's request - This is a
completely different repair from the one I've been working on (still not
complete unfortunately) and he's just asking for the CLIPs if anyone has them.
I only have the RF one but I think he needs the Front Panel
& Power Supply ones if they exist.
Alexander - It occurs to me now that you might not be able
to get one for the power supply as a lot fo these were purchased from 3rd
parties and HPAK never had the schematics to start with.

HP 3586B LSB/USB sideband tone
I have the subject receiver and have noticed lately that the LSB has a higher pitch than the USB.? I assume one of the BFO?crystals has drifted in frequency.? I looked at the manual and don't see an adjustment.? I guess I might be able to add a variable cap to pull it one way or the other.? I had also seen someone who used a DDS to generate the appropriate frequency.? I am very familiar with DDS and programming but would prefer to use a crystal.?
Can I get a new crystal?? Should I try to pull it back into alignment?? Use the DDS?and its concomitant phase noise and spurs?? Thoughts?
thanks.

Re: 5342A: blown sampler?
Hi, Your measurements with the diode mode suggest the sampler is OK, digital meters don't use the same amount of current to test resistance as older analogue meters and that's the reason you didn't get their readings.
I agree with Steve, you may need to replace a number of the 1826-0371, either on the A8 main VCO, A4 offset VCO or both.
I'd also check the A5 output to see if you're getting drive to the sampler driver and then check the sampler driver A26 itself.
I'd check in that order, check the VCOs are outputting signal, check the A5 to ensure it's outputting a signal to?A26 and it should alternate between the two VCOs, then check A26.
To check the sampler driver A26?you really need a?spectrum analyser. As most spectrum analysers have a capacitor (DC block) in the front end you need to terminate the A26 module with 50 Ohm and then measure what you see across that with the spec an, if you see lots of harmonics then all is good. You will not see anything?(apart from the 325MHz drive) without a dc return for the step recovery diode.
If the A26 is not working that could either be the SRD or it could be U1 on the A26 module - I have seen faulty U1 ICs in the past, most likely due to heat - they run very hot.
For the 1826-0371, you can buy fakes/replicas/copies off ebay or do what I do, I make a small smd pcb with 2 x 2sc3356 transistors, 2 x 100 ohm resistors and a 120 ohm resistor in the emitter lead?(all smd components)?with pins to fit in the DIP footprint. You'll see the schematic for the 1826-0371 on a number of the 5342A schematics. I've not had any issue with my made up boards yet.
If you find it is U1 on the A5 module I can also give you an alternative circuit for that but it is not quite optimised yet ?and?requires short leads to minimise parasitics.
Good luck Greg

Re: HP 8640B troubleshooting, no AM modulation
If you can control the output level with the Vernier knob, that eliminates many suspects, because it uses the same control paths as modulation.

?
Needed my HP 8640B for troubleshooting some radio equipment after 2 years of not using it. Ended up with troubleshooting the?HP 8640B first.
The RF output is not being modulated in AM (don't know about FM) from the internal source. I have no audio source to test the external AM modulation input but likely that will not work either..?
Checked the signal AM output socket and that is fine on 400 and 1000Hz and the level can be adjusted as expected. The meter gives normal readings as well .
The RF output has a very faint 1000 Hz modulation of perhaps a few % dept with the level all the way up and on 400 Hz no modulation at all. The RF settings and output? are fine.
Any ideas where to look?
Thanks, Nico

Re: HP 8640B troubleshooting, no AM modulation
?
Hi Nico there are many ways of producing an
external mod source. We all get used to having a standard piece of HP gear for
the job. .......but for instance a comms rx with a xtal calibrator will produce
a tone on the speaker terminals which can be fed to the ext mod socket on the
8640. Ok the impedances may not be optimum, but it is enough to determine if the
int mod source has failed or whether the modulation stages are to blame.
?
Having said that my experience is that a fault like
this (fail after storage) is usually?a psu fault probablt an electrolytic
(or maybe a tant) failing. It may be worth investing in a cheap mechanical time
switch and running the gear up for a couple of hours every day even if not in
use. Smoke detector advisable
