That's relatively good news. I
see the two main hotels? (Fountaingrove and Hilton ) weren't so lucky.
I'm still concerned about the homes of many friends.

Re: Avantek SPP90 amplifier
Hello all,
Its alright Ed. I thank you for your replies. I'm currently in not too much of a rush at this time. Planning to swap this component around late fall or winter. The bench was relocated from a nice A/C room to a "hot box" called the gulf coast climate in preparation for a move that is on going.
I did more reading and it turns out this pdf is so close but not enough. There are 4 databooks in total (page 1-7 "How to use the databook series") with the pdf I posted being one of them. I need 10 MHz to 3000 MHz / 3 GHz at least. The data book I posted only has components going up to 2000 MHz / 2 GHz at most.
So currently, of interest to my case is the databook from Avantek labeled "Microwave and Millimeter Wave Amplifier Data Book".?I usually arrive at a dead end on google unfortunately. I think I can send an email or two but I'm not sure if they are available anymore.
Some more random searches of Avantek components reveal the reason why I came here. Google "PPA-517R" for example.?There is a databook from HP themselves or rather Avantek had HP's name on the datasheets after it was aquired in 1991. The component I have is date coded for 1994. If anyone has anything around that date or can point me where to go it would be appreciated.
Right now I'm trying to break down what "SPP-90" stands for. PP I guess stands for Planar Pak. This can't be a switch either. I know it isn't from the design of the circuit. It has to be some sort of amp with +15V (??mA) constantly going thru its DC bias. S and 90 I have no clue. Is there a modern equivalent of the package name for "planar pak"? SMTO - 8 or SM - 25? I'm going off of a successor of Avantek (Cougar/Teledyne).

Re: HP854A Test Oscillator with worn out attenuator
Low frequency distortion is likely a capacitor failure.? First check
the power supply ripple, then the electrolytics in the feedback
signal path, then the main signal path.? I would start with A2C3,
2900uf, as it is only in circuit on the low range and is part of the
level feedback signal.? Next, A2C5 and A2C11, A2C13, etc.

Hi Alan Bill and Dennis. Thank you for your helpful
replies.Unfortunately, the attenuator switch is not similar to the
HP652a, it's a double 16 pole 10 way (balanced with 1 dB and 10 dB
steps). Today I've tried various cleaners and I think the problem
was old switch lubricant that had hardened. After soaking it in
Electrolube, and spraying it with a strong detergent (Power Force
kitchen cleaner) it was rinsed with boiling water. Now, after
drying, it looks good. The only problem is that? the waveform is
distorted when the frequency is below 50 Hz.

Re: Chinese-made reflow soldering ovens
I also bought the T962 in order to solder SMD packages with power pads. Did not apply firmware change, but used the kapton tape mod. Another error i found and not mentioned in www was a safety failure. The mains protective ground is connected to the metal case in such a clever way that the case remains isolated, which means: No protective ground. Basically the machine works, but is electrically unsafe (illegal!). I soldered 20 boards, two each time, no problem at all except strong (poisonous?) smell.

Sorry Lex, I didn't reply with info back then, because I was under the impression that you had already found what you needed. The link you listed, from the title, seems to be exactly the databook I have on paper, so I can't add any new info.? Good luck with your searching.

I seem to have a box of parts mostly related to HP 652A. Do you have a Schematic to compare 652A to 654A Range Switch and Attenuator Switch? If you do, would you post the schematic for the 654A switches? Google did not turn up complete schematics for 654A. I would test these to see if they are good.

SMD oven vrs a Hot plate
I’ve not had much success with these low cost ovens, I’ve found they overheat and suffer from hot spots, I guess a case of you get what you pay for. I now use a hot plate, the temperature is far easier to control, and you can correct parts if required during the process.

Re: Avantek SPP90 amplifier
Hello all,
Bumping for Ed's response and to give further detail of my own search.
I did a bit more searching and found a pdf from a polish? ftp.
Google "Avantek_Modular_and_Oscillator_Components_2nd_ed.pdf"
I'm getting close to finding what I want. Apparently it is a "Planarpak" (trademarked name by Avantek) that is case number PP-25 as it describes a surface mount 1/4 inch sided square package. It also references how to mount the component. Full details are given on 14-38 from that pdf.

Re: Chinese-made reflow soldering ovens
I have had the T962 (with the third party EST mod from day one) and have found it works well. I strongly recommend fitting that mod kit. I also tend to only use approx 60-70% of the drawer area when doing batches of small boards and none of what I've done to date has been particularly challenging in terms of components with large thermal mass - MMCX connectors are about the biggest I guess - but it works fine and is very repeatable. Pay attention to the very comprehensive EST manual, especially as regards positioning the thermocouples and setting the 'idle' fan speed and you won't go far wrong.

Hi Adam
Thank you for the information about the memory card required as being ?a

I am not a software guy or very pc literate so the listings below mean nothing
to me,
but I have been told the only way to talk to the 70900 is by using a hp

I have a VIPER card that I haven’t used but I am told that that will
not do the job
2 hp 9000 computer systems on for me another for someone in the uk that is more
skilled than me
?
We might have to re list this topic under as 70900 software & 70910?

I did put out a line once for the person that originally rote the
program but unfortunately she doesn’t appear to be on this site

Responding to your older post about the 70910A Receiver Personality
software.? I have it loaded on my system and desire to archive it.?
Perhaps someone here can offer me some ideas on how to do this/talk me through
it?? I'm concerned that I don't corrupt or accidentally delete any of the
files while I'm at it.? I have a couple 32KB cards, but the total size of
the files is about 700K or so.? I don't have the 9122 series floppy
drive.? Any thoughts on copying these files over the GPIB to hard disc so
I can post them to KO4BB for posterity (and system safety/longevity)?

Re: Some HP 8341A questions
Hi,
today I have dismantled the YO loop assembly, which contains the YTO as well as severak directional couplers etc., see here, this is my unit:
The YTO is the following one
and the PCB can be seen more clearly in this pic:
Does somebody have experience with these HP YTOs? I will test it today, but probably someone has some experience and can give a few hints.
I see a testpoint with +5, I assume this is +5V supply. There are two further testpoints for +20V and -40V. I wonder whether I need all these voltages, or just a few?
Best
Tobias

Yes, it is possible to test the YTO out of the box. It usually needs +15V, -5V. Heater is not necessary for it to oscillator.
Be very careful about the FM coil. I would just tune the main coil only. You need an SA to watch the output. It's usually at +10dBm.

Re: Chinese-made reflow soldering ovens
I made a toaster oven reflow oven, and it works very well. I have made about 70 runs, building 50 SMT boards, sometimes 5 at a time, and all came out soldered correctly. The temperature delta across the oven is about 10 degrees C.
For details, see:
The controller I used has been updated. I did not try the updated one yet.

Anyone have any experience or have colleagues who have experience using the

My eyes have become the major challenge?to producing the one- or
two-off projects, since many of the parts that?are available today?are
only made in SMD packages.?? I realize that placing them onto the
board still remains a challenge, but at least with a proper oven, I won't have
to hold a soldering iron steady enough to build the boards.
?
This model seems to be big enough to?handle all the boards that I want
to make, so that is a plus.? Just wondering if this model produces good
boards with no unsoldered areas, damaged components, etc.? If it can
consistently produce good boards, I'll take a chance on one of them.?
Reading the Chinglish instructions is scary enough , but maybe I can figure it
out well enough to make it work.

Hope someone can give good advice

Re: HP854A Test Oscillator with worn out attenuator
Ok, I was not familiar with that generator. As it is 10 MHz max and specializes in lower frequency operation and a variety of Z outputs as well as balanced and unbalanced... Not as straight forward as I first suggested. However, yes utilizing what is available may be your best approach. Or, because of the special nature of its output attenuator and configuration, you may be best off trying to get another unit as a parts donor with good switch mechanism in tact.

Hi Alan Thank you for that suggestion. That seems much more sensible than my plan. Perhaps the external attenuator could be made from the 0.25% resistors from the old unit. It is an 654A which only goes up to 10 MHz. My jobs are usually on low noise monitoring and DC stability measurements.?Chris

Thanks Paul,
I'm located in the Panhandle of Florida, in Shalimar which is just north of Destin on the Bay.
One mistake in my previous post is that the total size of the files on the internal memory is closer to 115K rather than 700K.? These files would all fit on a 128K memory card if I can locate one.
The issue I'm experiencing is that the firmware within the 70900A seems to be a modified subset of RMB that does not seem to support standard file transfer functions such as those that allow copy of files between storage devices.? So even if I did hook up an HPIB disk or obtain a 128K card for the 70004A, I don't see how I would instruct the 70900 to copy the files somewhere other than the internal storage.
This is troubling because I know the internal lithium 3.6V battery is likely to be near the end of it's life, and from what I read in the manual, the RX_Mode program (as well as all other DLPs on the internal memory) will be lost.
As for RMB, I do have several machines that run this natively on the 68K processors (VIPER card, 382 VXI system, etc).? But I don't see how these would help over the GPIB?? Separately, I am interested in obtaining the calibration software, which I expect I can run on these machines.
The firmware in this 70900A is Rev 960418 (B.06.03).
I am talking to the instrument via GPIB and ran a CATALOG? which produced the following listing.?
