Can you get a few good pictures of the RF section and post them? Maybe we
can identify how they did the attenuators. Some that I have seen used Gaas
smt spdt RF switches for the attenuators. Later 8657 sig gens did this.

and there didnt appear to be any mechanical relays in there. I couldnt
find any information on the components closest to the RF input to identify
any solid state relays or programmable attenuators.

In checking around I saw that Agilent promised in 2014 to post the CLIPs for

the E4406A but they dont seem to have followed through on that.

Does anyone happen to have them and could send me the A17 one?

you say and you might exercise your way out of it... could also have

The input switch U38(spdt GaAs) is available. Do a google search for it. MGS-71018 . I have seen these get lossy at 10 to 20 dB. That would be the first thing I would try.
This should work though it is only rated to 2.5 GHz but has the same levels:
Or maybe find the exact part on google.
The attenuator may be hard to find so hope it is the switch. It is the first thing in line to be damaged by a oops.

David.DiG sent me the CLIP (I'm hosting it here for now) and that provided the key detail to identify the bits.

The top of the board near the input looks like this:


but it turns out that the attenuator is on the bottom of the board:


This part is AT1, which interestingly doesn't seem to be listed in the parts list but is marked on the schematic and the IC itself as 1GM1-4203. Now either that has failed in such a way to put 15dB of attenuation inline or something in the control circuit has died and is asserting some combination of control lines to drive AT1 to 15dB.

I don't know if it is safe to apply an Oc cam's Razor to this but it does seem more likely that AT1 died than multiple op amps (MC33178D), resistors or capacitors have died.

It looks like I might be able to remove the shielding and plug the card in and probe the control lines to see what is asserted.

If anyone has any other suggestions I'm open to thoughts/comments. Any idea of where I might get a replacement 1GM1-4203 would be helpful as well.

display and it made good electrical contact and mechanically
latched. The
IBM SDL cable that I have has "A" connectors on both ends and it has a
different pinout than the HP-HIL cable. Still, similar IBM POS

wiring and
hacking the "A" key to fit in a "E" receptacle.

Hey Tom - Thanks for the reply.

David.DiG sent me the CLIP (I'm hosting it here for now) and that provided the key detail to identify the bits.

The top of the board near the input looks like this:


but it turns out that the attenuator is on the bottom of the board:


This part is AT1, which interestingly doesn't seem to be listed in the parts list but is marked on the schematic and the IC itself as 1GM1-4203. Now either that has failed in such a way to put 15dB of attenuation inline or something in the control circuit has died and is asserting some combination of control lines to drive AT1 to 15dB.

I don't know if it is safe to apply an Occam's Razor to this but it does seem more likely that AT1 died than multiple op amps (MC33178D), resistors or capacitors have died.

It looks like I might be able to remove the shielding and plug the card in and probe the control lines to see what is asserted.

If anyone has any other suggestions I'm open to thoughts/comments. Any idea of where I might get a replacement 1GM1-4203 would be helpful as well.

The National Instruments cards ARE supported by HPDrive,� the program depends on cards based on the NEC uPD7210 and derivatives which includes most if not all National Instruments ISA and PCI cards.� I am using NI ISA cards that are based on NI TNT chip.� I have also used used NI PCI cards with HPDrive and HPDir.

The 82321 board itself has at least 512KB of RAM, plus room to install
another 512KB. Each 512KB is 4 chips, I assume they must be 256Kx4
chips. The 82305 board is a RAM expansion board. It has at least 512KB
of RAM, plus room to install another 2.5MB of RAM. If you have the
82305 expansion board installed then the 82321 board must have 1MB
installed, so then you have at least 1.5MB of total RAM, and up to 4MB
of total RAM if the 82305 board is fully populated.

I'm not sure how using a Viper board would related to the the HPDrive
software. The HPDrive software uses a non-intelligent GPIB adapter to
emulate an HPIB storage device and is only compatible with certain
GPIB adapters. You couldn't run the HPDrive software directly with a
Viper board. I suppose you could set up two systems, one running HP
BASIC on a Viper board and another system running HPDrive with a
supported GPIB board and cable the two together so the Viper board
sees the HPDrive system as an HPIB storage device. I'm not sure what
the point of that would be though.

Can you get a few good pictures of the RF section and post them? Maybe we can identify how they did the attenuators. Some that I have seen used Gaas smt spdt RF switches for the attenuators. Later 8657 sig gens did this.

Sounds like you on the right track , If you lucky the relay is just stuck as you say and you might exercise your way out of it... could also have suffered from input overload ...a bit harder to fix

old pocket computers. I think one of my very old logic analyzers used
HPIL, but that's all I have. Those little pocket computers are not

82305 expansion board installed then the 82321 board must have 1MB
installed, so then you have at least 1.5MB of total RAM, and up to 4MB
of total RAM if the 82305 board is fully populated.

I'm not sure how using a Viper board would related to the the HPDrive
software. The HPDrive software uses a non-intelligent GPIB adapter to
emulate an HPIB storage device and is only compatible with certain
GPIB adapters. You couldn't run the HPDrive software directly with a
Viper board. I suppose you could set up two systems, one running HP
BASIC on a Viper board and another system running HPDrive with a
supported GPIB board and cable the two together so the Viper board
sees the HPDrive system as an HPIB storage device. I'm not sure what
the point of that would be though.

You certainly would be star if you cracked this problem with a HP-HIL keyboard converter

If I was to start the user speck and answer to your question B

I believe as the demand would not run into 100’s so the converter for just a keyboard converter would be over $75 therefore

I would only have the keyboard interface and possibly make the converter a keyboard KVM switch as desk space is very short when running 2 or 3 computers

And this might make the cost moor acceptable

Also it might need the possibility to create a personal keyboard look up table so that other keyboards can be used such a French and Chinese

Sorry for being slow and silent - I am the guy who planned (or still plans) an adapter. Sadly, things were fucked up a little bit here: my exwife is in hospital again (as always), and one of my employees has a tussle with the German mafia.

I am, in principle, still interested in tackling the problem. My main questions are:
A) is anyone willing to betatest. This, I ask as I have no HP HIL capable workstation; my logic analyzer is a 16500C and a 16700A who both do PS2.

B) would a price of 50USD for keyboard and 75USD for keyboard and mouse work?

want to look at surplus distributors such as All Electronics,
Electronics Goldmine, and (not quite a surplus distributor) Jameco.

Thanks for the info. The only things I have that uses HPIL are two HP
old pocket computers. I think one of my very old logic analyzers used
HPIL, but that's all I have. Those little pocket computers are not
currently functioning, though.

My Viper baud is based on a 68000 part number 82321-60011 with a sub PCB on it part number 82305-60001

The idea of getting the Viper bourd working is to use it for the HP drive project as a reliable storage medium

The 82321 board itself has at least 512KB of RAM, plus room to install
another 512KB. Each 512KB is 4 chips, I assume they must be 256Kx4
chips. The 82305 board is a RAM expansion board. It has at least 512KB
of RAM, plus room to install another 2.5MB of RAM. If you have the
82305 expansion board installed then the 82321 board must have 1MB
installed, so then you have at least 1.5MB of total RAM, and up to 4MB
of total RAM if the 82305 board is fully populated.

I'm not sure how using a Viper board would related to the the HPDrive
software. The HPDrive software uses a non-intelligent GPIB adapter to
emulate an HPIB storage device and is only compatible with certain
GPIB adapters. You couldn't run the HPDrive software directly with a
Viper board. I suppose you could set up two systems, one running HP
BASIC on a Viper board and another system running HPDrive with a
supported GPIB board and cable the two together so the Viper board
sees the HPDrive system as an HPIB storage device. I'm not sure what
the point of that would be though.
