Hello Group:
I started a collection of Tektronix gear but have developed an interest in HP's assortment of spectrum analyzers. The 141T seems to offer the biggest variety and seems to be readily available on eBay. I'm interested in general comments about these instruments. Are they servicable, are parts generally available in generic form? Any recommendations? Thanks for your comments.

Manual or any info wanted
Howdy all-
I'm looking for a service manual or schematic diagram for the HP 233A audio oscillator.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi All,
I have a 652a (s.n. 826-01432) that has output level problems but only at a very specific range of frequencies. On the x10 range from ~40Hz to ~75Hz, the output level seems to be modulated by another signal. I thought it may have to do with ripple on one of the supplies but everything looks clean. The level between 40Hz and 75Hz will swing virtually full scale on the meter at some frequencies but is relatively stable at 60Hz. On all of the other ranges, it's fine.
I've downloaded a manual from BAMA but it's for the newer model and the boards are different. If someone has seen this problem and can point me in the right direction or knows where I can get an older service manual, I'd appreciate the help.
Thanks PB

Hello all,
I am after a working or otherwise HP4260A unit. I have one in good condition except for the large rotating resistor (R3).
If you have one of these units, or know of one somewhere, I would like to know about it.
Thanks
Rod.

HP54503A DSO Main Board Repair
Hello Group,
I have a pristene 54503A DSO with a problem in the Horizontal timebase.
It fails with many codes mostly related to the trigger area. I could supply the codes on request. Does anyone out in the ether have any experience fixing these boards? I have the HP service manual but as you probably know there are no schematics in the manual. If anyone has them I would like to get a set. As far as getting the unit repaired externally it most likely is not worth it since when HP last had exchange boards they wanted way more than what the scope is worth these days.
I would like to put it to use in my ham shack.
Thanks to all,
Sam W3OHM

i didn't knew the 8569, but be very careful with the knob, make sure that there is no slight defect in the switch which is probably repairable. if you use some force and some parts broke (-maybe more than yet) than you have big problems. i have heared about that, that hp plastic parts get very brittle with the time, so be careful!

It seems that it is somehow mechanically blocked, there is a small plastic rod going from analyzer's front panel towards the span knob and ending inside it. I did little research and figured out that this rod is actually the thing that blocks the span button from being turned further than to 10MHz span.
Shall I press something or do some other action to disable that blocking?
Thanks for any advice.

Re: PROM Programmer for HP5150A
Hi, i remember programming that chip some 20 years ago. It is fairliy simple and because the item is so small, you can do it "by hand" if you can't find another solution (wiring some switches and a timer for the programming voltage). In my TTL data book of 1979 they show the pinout and write: See Bipolar Microcomputer Components Data Book LCC4270. That one should be available somewhere in a university library or so. I also have a sheet of notes on programming the S188 somewhere, where... PROM Programmer for HP5150A
Hi
All,
?
I have
a thermal printer HP 5150A that requires a new character code PROM on the BCD
(Binary Coded Decimal) circuit card.? (The HP part number is 1816-0561.)
The PROM is type 74S188 which is a 256 bit memory organised as 32*8
bits.
?
I can
purchase the IC and I can work out the required bit map but I have no way of
programming the PROM.?
?
Anyone
know of a circuit for a suitable PROM programmer for this chip or could provide
this service for a fee?? All I can find on the net are references to EEPROM
or flash and newer chips.
?
Thanks
for any help,
?

Hi There,
I need an HP8640B opt323 manual to fix my

The HP8640A

counter, and thats where my problem is.
If you know where I can fnd

Re: hp 5100A /5110A synth set Spectrum Generator
Hi Morris:
I've looked further into the radio module and I think the only parts needed are a transistor and some support circuitry. The transistor is biased off and the negative input swing causes it to generate a pulse. I have a module on the way to make some measurements. Do you have any info on what the 1 MHz signal looks like in terms of magnitude and source impedance?
What output harmonics does the spectrum generator need to supply? I think it's only those from 3 to 4 MHz, or are there more?

Hi all,
When repairing my 5110A with the dud SRD last week I tried several varactors and eventually found one from a junked cellular base station tansmitter which worked very well. It is a stud mounted power device used a tripler in the final of a ? FM transmitter aroung 800 or so MHz judging by the appearance of the rest of the circuit. It's about the size of an older style 10 watt power zener, but gold plated with a ceramic insulated header. It is made by NEC and labelled "SV 888". After the HP 5110A SRD oven assembly together with its control transistor Q2 was removed from the board, there was plenty of room to mount the diode on a pair of stiff wire "legs". It's probably the only non-US made part in the whole system now, which is a sobering thought when you think of where comonents come from these days.
There is lots of this sort of equipment around at hamfests etc. It had been sitting in my junk box for years - it just goes to show you should never throw anything out!
The 5100A/5110A synthesizer is now working perfectly. The only other parts that had to be replaced were a fuse and the "power on" neon indicator in the 5100A, both glass components :-) It's a very impressive performer!
I note the comments about other harmonic generators. There are lots of ways to do the job, and I had briefly thought about the subject before finding my diode. Going for a technology shift would have required a lot of reworking of the 5110A and would have been a major effort. HP seemed to like SRDs, they are in quite a lot of other equipment including range extender plugins for various counters and also the 8708A synchronizer. This is the first one I have seen fail.

Hello Looking for the schematics for the HP 8656B signal generator. Hope some can help! Best Regards Hardy

Greetings everyone. Morris has kindly donated to me an HP5100B synthesizer. Unfortunately the matching HP5110B Driver was not part of the package (the original 5110B having now gone to that great scrapyard in the sky), and I'm desperately seeking a replacement. Nothing of course on e-Bay. So if anyone has a 5110B driver surplus to their requirements that I can beg, borrow or steal (or buy for that matter)I would be most grateful to hear from you. It need not be working or even complete, as long as there is a reasonable chance it could be repaired. Can somebody help? Thanks Rob Fincher VK3BRF

Re: hp 5100A /5110A synth set Spectrum Generator
Might also be worth trying a tunnel diode. They are excellent at turning slow edges into fast ones, which is what you want if you're trying to generate harmonics.
Stan Griffiths (w7ni@...) usually has some Tek-surplus diodes for sale.

Hi:
As an alternative to using a Step Recovery Diode to generate the harmonics it may be possible to use a modified A45 Module from a PRC-77 military radio. The A45 Module is called "One-megacycle spectrum generator" and uses a PNP 2N2273 transistor to generate the harmonics with a fairly simple circuit powered by +10 Volts. In the theory of operation TM 11-5820-667-35 pg 2-22.3 "The sinusoidal 1-mc oscillations are applied to spectrum generator Q2 (2N2273) through coupling capacitor C3 (10 uuF) . The spectrum generator is normally cut off by the reverse base bias applied through R4 (19k), and conducts only on the negative half cycles of the 1-mc signal. A positive pulse, rich in harmonics, is developed across transformer T2 and coupled to first mixer module A44.
This might be an excellent replacement for the impossible to get SRD.
