Re: 54003A success

Indeed, but with a 1000:1 probe that becomes a +/- 2000 volt input range which is sufficient.

That was a work requirement and their solution covers more, although this would be sufficient for them too.

The 54003A modules are available very inexpensively.? With a small +/-

very nicely allow high impedance measurements with 50 ohm instruments
like spectrum analyzers, up to 300 MHz or so.

These can be had for under $30 shipped from the auction site.

IMHO a very useful device to have hanging around the lab. Especially for

Not quite.? A USB solution was addressed earlier which is the defacto standard nowadays for communicating with old floppy deives under a modern OS.?

Re: Stuck APC-7 connector

Thanks, guys.
Yes, what I really need to do above all is avoid over-torquing/over-stressing the connector at the point where it goes into the bulkhead. If I can get them apart without doing that, I don't see how I could cause any damage.

Re: Keysight U1242B Schematic

Hi Ozan. Thank you for that tip. Unfortunately the jack tests open. But the resistance on the jack contacts on the board reads 6.02 Mohm. So the fault is somewhere on the board.
?
I have found other posts where the individual just removed the jack to clear the issue of high resistance in the jack.

Re: Stuck APC-7 connector

Can you determine which end has the threads out - the N adapter or the port?
Then using a padded jaw pliers and the hex wrench, turn the nut that doesn’t have the threads exposed. I would guess the port has the exposed threads and the N adapter is threaded on. In this case turn the hex nut CCW.
If this is not the case then turn the port collar collar to release the connection.
Someone put it on too tight or really tightened an N cable onto the adapter, spinning both adapter and cable, over tightening the adapter to the port. Do use the padded jaw pliers with the hex wrench so that you don’t twist the port connector.

Re: HP 3403C True RMS Voltmeter display fault

My guess is that the clock source must be OK, otherwise the blinking function would not work or the display would blink at a "wrong" rate.
I think I would probe all pins around both the LD110 and LD111 with a voltmeter and an oscilloscope, and check for correct supply voltages, reference voltage, "illegal" logic levels, proper multiplex signals etc ... I know the 3403 insides are "densely packed" and the probing may be difficult, but it may give very useful clues.
... And of course please keep us posted !

Re: Stuck APC-7 connector

Put a few layers of masking tape around the knurled nut closest the panel and apply clockwise torque gently with channel-lock pliers. If it doesn't come loose easily, put a wrench on the flats of the hex section at the N-connector end and torque it slightly CCW while turning the ring CW.

Re: VNA Reference Impedance Renormalization

Good point. I use a DC block permanently installed at the RF input of any DC-sensitive piece of test equipment. It only takes a couple of hundred millivolts of DC to trash the front end of an expensive - for example - spectrum analyzer and that's something you don't want to do once, let alone twice!

Re: VNA Reference Impedance Renormalization

Cheers Jim.

Look forward to your findings.

I've done similar things in the past, some even work with a Nano VNA, within reason...

The secret I found in the immdiate past work life, is to "Calibrate" / "Normalise" with the test cables first (especially the one from the Source Port.)? Before investigating odd DUT's, to get a representive reading.

Discharge any capacitors first!? (Don't ask!)

Best Regards.

Stuck APC-7 connector

Hi guys,
I'm having trouble removing this connector. I've slackened off collar 'B' anti-clockwise in the picture and it's free. Collar 'A' on the other hand, is immovable. It should slacken off and retreat back towards the 'port 1' sign when turned clockwise, but it's not. This whole assembly should really only be finger-tight, but even with an adjustable wrench on the flats of 'A' I cannot rotate it. I'm using as much force as I dare and fear damaging it if I go any harder, so something must be amiss here. I'm not sure if the flats of the brass part 'C' could be of any assistance here or not, but I'm pretty sure I've never had to do anything with this section to get the assembly off before.
Any suggestions?
?
Thanks, Jinx.

Re: Service manual scan post processing

Nice! That is a pleasant suprise. Would expect an EPROM change might have been required.

I wonder if my Minolta has a similar upgrade. I will look in to it if I ever get the SCSI communication to work.

Of course, the grayscale will be much better for the image, schematic, and diagram pages. The text only pages are probably fine as black and white, but as a rule for me I always ingest as color so I don't knitpick each and every page at the scanning ingest step.

It also appears to have opened up a contrast option on the PC end.

Great that all the software appears to be resident on the hardware by default.?

I wonder how much they charged for the grayscale option back in the day?

I don't have the schematic but I debugged a similar issue on a U1272A meter. On U1272A Aerr shows up if the meter is not in amps setting but leads are in amps connectors. The way meter figures out the lead position is based on a banana connector with a split collar. Any dirt that connects two sides of the connector even with a high resistance gives the error. It took many cleaning cycles with alcohol and distilled water until it went away. Assembly comes out on a little PCB but connector can be cleaned from outside too.?

Re: 8596E Spectrum Analyzer Fault

Okay, well, I've been able to bring on the fault condition by simply rotating the datum dial whilst in the 'stop frequency' mode, so dirty keys are now looking increasingly unlikely (though they will require attention).
Since the consensus (such as it is!) is to investigate the PSU, I'll do that next. I'll scope the power rails of the individual low voltage supplies out of the main PSU and check their voltage levels are within spec. That should trap 99% of PSU problems. I'll also check the ESRs of the larger electrolytics and any suspicious bulges whilst I'm at it. Anything else I should look at?
