Further information about the transfer to groups.io

Dr. David Kirkby

At the minute, NOTHING has been copied from the HP/Agilent Yahoo group. All 95 member on /g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment have subscribed themselves. Around 2 members are subscribing each hour now.

I am in the position to start copying almost everything, including the email addresses of account holders, and all the data. I have NOT started this yet, for a good reason.

I have put this group into 'moderation mode'. All posts will be moderated. Any attempt to start a new topic will be declined, but this gives me the option of permitting any post that may have taken some time to arrive, to appear on Yahoo.

Sometime between 21:00 GMT today (Sunday), and 09:00 GMT tomorrow (Monday) I will

1) Bounce all messages from here - nobody will be able to post.
2) Start the copy from Yahoo to

The copy process can take a week or more, and may not be 100% complete. During this time, accounts and posts will be slowly copied by , as Yahoo block any attempts to make massive downloads of data. During this time, your account may or may not be on .

IF YOU WANT TO POST NOW, SUBSCRIBE MANUALLY at
?
/g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment

That will guarantee your account exists. But otherwise, it should hopefully be copied over during the next week or so. If you create your account? yourself, when the copy comes, your account will not be copied.

By not commencing the copy immediately, it should allow the Yahoo messages to be completed, and a "clean" copy made. If the copy was started immediately, some messages that are held up in the system might never get to .

Feet for HP8672A

Where does one got looking for new feet for the back of a 8672A?
I just unwrapped my recent eBay purchase and its missing 2 of them.
Unit seem to work and other than a broken off slide switch lever on the ALC selector I think I am a happy owner of a functional signal generator.

Thanks

Reliability of FieldFox portable VNAs, SAs and combination analyzers

Dr. David Kirkby from Kirkby Microwave Ltd

Some years ago I bought a CertiPrime N9923A from Agilent. It developed a hardware fault within a month or so.

Sometime later, someone I know bought an N9912A combination analyzer. I checked that for him. The performance was poor as a VNA, (dynamic range is typically 49 dB at 5-6 GHz), but I understand the N9912A is only for basic measurements. But the instrument worked okay. Then, despite me knowing that the N9912A is not a good VNA, I got the chance to pick one up cheap and bought it. That was dead on arrival.

A week or so ago I was talking to a customer of mine, who said he had heard reports from several sources about poor reliability of FieldFox instruments

I'm just wondering if others have experienced this problem. I guess it is going to be hard to get any hard facts about this, as I doubt Keysight will be publishing MTBF data.

Having handled a couple of N9912As (SA+VNA), and one N9923A (VNA), I'm impressed with the build quality. But now I am starting to wonder how relieable these instruments are. They might be quite risky used purchases.

Re: Machinable Potting Material ???

If you have a drill press, you can chuck a threaded screw and drill the tap hole for 4-40 by feeding the quill onto a drill bit held stationary in a chuck.? I used this technique to salvage an $85 air valve on a Toyota Tercel.

I'd broken a plastic teet off taking it off.? So I drilled the proper size hole in a length of a #10-24 screw, shaped the end with a file in the drill press, took it out.? I don't recall now if I used a tap or? cut a groove? to tap the plastic and.? I put epoxy on the threads and screwed it.? It worked like a charm.

The principle here is that a rotating workpiece will cause the drill to follow the center of rotation.?

You can see the setup I used here:

It didn't aign as well as needed for the differential screw, but for your purpose it would be fine.

What happens next

1) Please stop posting here. If you require immediate support, join /g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment now. The instructions and description of the group are there. If you don't require immediate support, then just wait and should hopefully get subscribed automatically. I say hopefully because a message from says

IMPORTANT: Yahoo Groups has been very unreliable lately. We will do our very best, but there is a good chance that we may not be able to transfer all of your messages, photos or files. We will tell you which ones we were not able to transfer. Also, the migration queue is several days long at this point. Please be patient as we work through the backlog of tranfer requests.
========

2) I will wait until at least 21:00 GMT on Sunday, August 19th before bouncing messages on the HP/Agilent Yahoo group. If messages are still coming in, due to delays in the mail system, I might leave it as late as 09:00 GMT on Monday 20th August before bouncing messages.

3) The following messages will probably be deleted, on Yahoo,

as the author does not want them transferred. I'm trying to negotiate a possible solution to this, but those might be deleted, so read them now if you want them. There's not a huge amount of information.

4) I will start the copying of data from Yahoo to . With the exception of those messages listed above, everything will hopefully be copied over, but I can't guarantee that. The message I received today from says the following

As most of you will be aware, the Yahoo group has been unreliable, and a decision has been made to migrate the group over to

/g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment

I started the process several days ago, and are now ready to move on to the second stage.

Will you please STOP POSTING to the HP/Agilent list now. If you want support now for your test equipment, please join the group yourself.? It will be better if you create yourself an account on , as there are multiple groups on there, all much more reliable than the Yahoo one.

How about these? Thread one onto the end of a long 4-40 screw, heat it and push it into a pre-drilled hole? Once the plastic cools, it shouldn't be able to move.

Here's something a little out of the ordinary for this group.

I'm trying to track down any information on the serial and/or gpib
commands for a late 80's HP 5980a gas chromatograph. Normally, there
would be an associated programming manual or the codes would be listed
in the reference manual. Not this time.

Through much wailing and gnashing of keyboards I have managed to track
down a list of 2 letter serial commands from a NI website and through
the wayback machine a description of an open source python program
from hellonull.com called 5890 Remote Panel. Unfortunately the
program itself was not archived and the site seems to be offline now.
I did find some text describing the general format of the commands on
that site in the wayback machine.

The site also had a reference to the HP/Agilent document 19242-90120
which describes a GPIB/RS232 interface card for the instrument (and
presumably the command set). That document does not seem to exist on
the Agilent site or anywhere, really.

Bonus if anyone knows what the HPIL command codes look like
or even if they are the same as the serial commands.
The instrument I have has the HPIL interface right now.
I really do not want to pay more for a GPIB/RS232 board
than I paid for the instrument though, so we'll see what
I end up with.

There is a usb/HPIL translator floating around although
it's PIC based.

Given the cost of HPIL cables, or even the parts if you want to make up
your own, the serial route may be best.

There are a couple of purported drivers for the 5890, but no
source that could be used to extract the command set that I can find.

I probably have enough hints to make some progress, but if
anyone has any info or pointers I'd much appreciate it

The ultimate goal here is to cobble together a gc-ms for
drinking water analysis for the rural area that I live.
I was looking for a full instrument set, but I stumbled
across this gc at my local university surplus store and
it looked in really nice condition, which is a rarity
and, even better, it was cheap.

Still looking for the mass-spec part.

thanks
