Hello,

Since the thread about cheap noise source on the other list got very
interesting and I was doing some repairs on my HP 8970A and 8970B I
would like to ask some questions which I am not sure how to approach.

I bought a 346B some years back and used it with my 8970A and all was
OK, recently I got an 8970B with E70 error. I found the 1st EPROM broken
and replaced it with the firmware found on KO4BB site. Since I was
inside the unit also replaced the battery.

And here the problem started...

After battery replacement I had E80 so I proceeded with the calibration
33 SP and the 346B source. Problem is that it fails in around 1-2
seconds with E13. E13 is saying that it is practically not enough ENR
coming from the source?! Correct me if I'm wrong.

So I powered on the 8970A and tested the source there. All OK and 33.1
SP works fine and shows around +4.x dBm uncorrected value after it finishes.

From my readings on the HP lists I saw some people reported that the
value should be +6 to +8 dB uncorrected. WHy I only see +4 dB?

So I am not sure now if my 346B is broken or the 8970B is broken since
everything works on 8970A. Another possibility would be that the 5dB
attenuator pad in the 8970B is broken.

Can someone tell me what is the uncorrected value for the 346B and 8970A
after calibration? Is there any difference in reported uncalibrated
value between 8970A and 8970B?

Best regards,
Razvan

Re: Looking for microwave frequency counter

Thanks to all that replied and helped me find a counter. I settled on an HP 5342A from a list member.

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

No, not Avantek. The IC (just the chip) is supposedly still in production at Keysight, but I have no idea if it's still available in that package. I think it was designed in the 1980s.

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

Could this be an Avantek part after spinning out from HP?

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

Just a guess, in case you can't find the data sheet:

Vd=7V
Id is adjusted for 150mA max. or leave it at Idss if it's less than 150 mA.

Vladan

Re: Looking for 1GG7-4210 amplifier datasheet

The IC looks like an old HP traveling wave amplifier, but what¡¯s around it does not look like it was made at HP. The gate voltage (bottom left pin with the wire going to the feedthrough) is quite likely adjusted to give a certain drain current, so it won¡¯t be a fixed number on the data sheet. Vd is probably 5-7V. Sorry, I don't have the data sheet.

My data base shows that this transistor has been replaced by 1853-0059. PNP, VCE-55V, IC-5A, PD-150W, FT-3MHZ, SI TO-3.

Mine seems to be C-E short ... which is sub-optimal

Re: RED light diffusing tape used in HP instrument displays

IIRC, the film used for LED displays was not only fairly monochromatic, but polarizing.? The idea was that light going through from the outside would be polarized, change polarization when bouncing off the inside, and then be blocked by the film.

Possibly you could combine both?

3M makes tape (which is pricey) but you can buy sheets for a few dollars.

Re: HP 3852a extended memory modules info

Pay especial attention to the alphabet soup past the part number, and for that manufacturer, try to track it down to a specific outline in the data sheet.? Not all manufacturers give you a link to a specific JEDC standard part outline, so sometimes it's needed to go to the mechanical drawing.

Annoying at best.

Once you have a board design, note on the schematic or board the specific part, or using a specific part, make sure that the notes give the complete part number and equivalent outline/package.

Yep, annoying.

I have a few C# examples which work with quite old devices. Please email
me OFF list, as these are customer code and I cannot post them publicly.

Re: HP 3852a extended memory modules info

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Perhaps the best thing might be to make a new, dual footprint so that either narrow or wide will fit rather than overlaying one on another ¨C which will always produce DRCs.? It¡¯s rare that us ¡®amateurs¡¯ will be designing a board so dense that a wider footprint would be a problem with space.? I regularly make new footprints for odd devices, so a range of dual ones covering (perhaps) SO8 up to whatever (SO20?) and then use them thus covering all possibilities (until something else comes along of course!).

?

As I always hand build all my boards I tend to make the footprint pads a bit longer on the outside of the device as it makes hand soldering a bit easier!

?

All this aside, I think you¡¯ve done a super job on these boards. ?It¡¯s a long time since I was designing systems with discrete processors and memories (often 68000-based stuff) that it was refreshing to see someone still doing much the same.

Here is the pad difference seen on? half of U1 shown with SO20W and other half with both SO20 and? SO20W. Routing is possible but a few tracks and vias had to be moved. SO20W and SO20 overlap.
This is for illustration only.

Re: VISA problems with ancient test equipment?

Hello Yves,
thanks for your detailed reply.
I am not familiar with vb.net, so probably there are a few more code lines necessary for initialisation of the program. Maybe you can send me this code.

Will test your solution as soon I can.
BTW I also use the? USB-GPIB interface 82357B

Hi Ernst,

?

Using the 5350B series meters is not simple with GPIB at first glance. But you have to follow a small procedure:

?

You must put the meter in HOLD mode to begin.

?

- Press the SET key

- Press the SAMPLE RATE button

- With the LEFT arrow, move the cursor to the HOLD position on the left.

- Go to Connection Expert (I used USB-GPIB interface 82357B).

- In the menu on the left, choose the interface to which your 5350B is connected.

- Choose ADD and GPIB INSTRUMENT

- Choose the GPIB address corresponding to your 5350B (example GPIB0 and primary address 14)

- Uncheck AUTO IDENTIFY

- press on OK

- The instrument should appear in the list with the name UNKNOW and the address GPIB0::14::INSTR for this example.

- You will not be able to test with Connection Expert, however this will allow using a program to communicate if you add the following two VISA commands, allowing you to complete a reading with the LINEFEED character. In the example, these are two commands used in vb.net.

?

errorStatus = visa32.viSetAttribute(vi5351B, VI_ATTR_TERMCHAR_EN, 1)

errorStatus = visa32.viSetAttribute(vi5351B, VI_ATTR_TERMCHAR, 10)

?

?

?

If you use a GPIB interface from National Instruments, such as GPIB-USB-B or PCI-NI-GPIB for example, it will be possible to communicate with the instrument if you add the two options (Configure EOS):

- Enable "Terminate READ on EOS"

- EOS byte=10

?

?

?

?

I wrote a small program to test the sensitivity of the 535xB meters a few weeks ago.

I modified it to allow only 10 consecutive readings on input 1 or input 2 (terminated 50 Ohms).

?

The image shows you the result of a 300 MHz -20dBm signal at input 2.

?

If you can't test GPIB communication, I will send you this little program for you to try.

Objet?: [HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment] VISA problems with ancient test equipment?

?

Hello,
my HBIB system works with 8568B spectrum anaylyzer, 8970A, 34401A and others.

However I fail to connect a 5350B to my system. Diag 80 (HPIB diagnosis) shows no errors. Also tried ddifferent HPIB cables with no change.
The counter is not found with Keysight Connection Expert. I get an VISA BFFF0012 error when I try to connect within WinGPIO software.

Before digging into the hardware of the HPIB interface within the counter, I assume that VISA is not working with "old" test equipment, as I have same problem with 5343A counter.

Is there workaround? Any ideas are appreciated.

Regards Ernst

I keep looking at my parts and seems the issue with the parts is naming by different vendors.? .Nexperia SO20 is 7.5mm wide while TI SO20 is 5.3mm wide.? Lesson learnt - cant trust the names - need to check dimensions.?
