Re: Another 3GHz 53132-68003 Chanel 3 option design for the 53131A and 53132A

Razvan:

The 3GHz board is a divide by 128, with a max output of 23.4375MHz at 3GHz.
That has to get to the main board through the ribbon cable, not the best way to connect.
At 12GHz the output would be almost 100MHz so I think that the higher frequency option boards likely have an additional divider to keep the output at a reasonable frequency.

There are two pins (CH3CODE0 and CH3CODE1) on the connector that are used to tell the main board that one of the options is installed.

I would think that a combination of those pins would select one of the three options or no option.

I will try to see what effect they have later this weekend.

Thanks for the update.

Do the boards count randomly when there is no input?

Were these the OEM options or clones?

Re: Attenuator "O" Rings

In metric-land I got a bunch of 1mm ID 2mm OD watch stem seals, eBay or Amazon I seem to recall. That was about 10 years back on an 8566A - still working fine - done several other attenuators since.
However while they seem OK at the moment, nowadays having had cheap plumbing 'rubber' seals go gooey after about 5 years, I have little faith in unbranded stuff and I'll bet it's just a matter of time until they start to return to their original liquid hydrocarbon form.
Probably worth finding some of that size from a known (and trusted) manufacturer?

I got a 8593A with a unknown problem,
to me it looks to be a failes display board. Any tips to short the search ?

Hi,

?

I bought options 030 and 124 (3GHz and 12.4GHz) on eBay a few years ago.

I tested them again today and here is the result on their respective sensitivity.

?

Option 124 doesn't pass specs below 1.8GHz, but the rest is ok.

?

his gives you an overview of the performance of these modules.

Tony:

The 53131A had three options for the channel 3 input, 3GHz, 5GHz, and 12GHz.

I have never seen anything on EBAY over 3GHz installed in a unit.

I have seen Chinese Channel 3 boards for 3GHz (a lot of them) and 6GHz (just 1) currently listed.
I do not see the 12GHz board listed at this time, although it was listed in the past.

I did a board a few years back using the HMC432 (divide by 2) and two HMC434 (divide by 8) that could get to 6GHz or higher.

A less expensive version would use the HMC432 driving an MC12079 programmed to divide by 64, have the layout for it but never made it.

Never did any follow up on these because the Chinese clone boards were so inexpensive it was not worth pursuing.

I literally gave away several 8620A’s at hamfests, hoping Roy didn’t trip over one of mine! I have one lone 8620C with 2-18GHz plug in and maybe anther plug in or two, and several scales. Every now and then I fire it up for sentimental reasons!

I did a bulk buy a few years ago which made a few folks happy. They came from: ?

Quite cheap if you got 500 then, no idea now...

Re: Attenuator "O" Rings

Is the attenuator the same form factor as the 8568/8566 attenuator - HP 33321A? If so the attenuator o-rings are spelled out in the 8566 attenuator notes on this site. They are n-butyl rubber and are available from Apple Rubber Co. In New York. They may also still be available from Keysight.

The ones that I had left are installed in HP-9000 systems at LSSM, but I could borrow one and try it. My 3852A is in a rack, though, how do you reach that board? Can I do it without taking it out of the rack?

Oh yes, also...these boards are 7.5MB; didn't you mention earlier that the 3852A wouldn't address that much RAM?

I made the same change to my version. My intention was to build a bunch of these via pick-and-place; components on the bottom with all that open space up top was...not welcome. ;)

Same here. It's pretty likely you'll find your size if you get one of those kits.?

Only one issue is the hole locations -? other than that I think i will try your design on the 3852A. Will try up to 8 chips. I dont thin you can use more than 4MB in the 3852A

BOONTON 8900B PEAK POWER CALIBRATOR

Hi all, i appreciate this isnt a HPAK instrument but being Boonton it kinda is :)

Has anyone got a full service manual for these please. Ive managed to find one online but it doesnt have a circuit diagram.

I also have a pdf of Boontons no35 notebook? by G.Raymond. Polen who designed the instrument, but id really like the full manual if possible and it will save me trying to draw out the circuit by hand.

?

And definatly off brand topic, has anyone any details/specs on a Marconi TM9701 VHF/UHF Detector, test accessory. Its an accessory with both a positive and negative output via seperate diodes. Id like to test it but manufacturers specs would be handy.

Many thanks in advance Pete Harrison.
