My 8663 was a flea market "bargain" (well - not really) but it was repairable by replacing
the inverter transistors with BUX48 as well as a bunch of electrolytic capacitors
and some other components that looked "suspicous". The generator works but
I would gladly invest in the switch-mode power supplies pictured.

The generator also suffered from bad phase noise. So far I have removed and opened
almost all RF modules only to find one burned resistor in the modulator section.
The PN have been reduced by replacing the fan as well as improving its rubber mounts
using PC fan vibration dampers. It helped to some extent but since the specifications
exceeds those of any spectrum analyzer I own, I will not be able to verify the repairs.

A BOM of the new SMPS would be appreciated.

I have two HP8591E spectrum analysers one has several options installed including opt 130 the other had no option installed. I found opt 130 and opt 004 on eBay I just copied the wiring from the other HP8591E with the 130 installed so it was easy it worked ok no problem and option 130 calibrated ok and works well. I also replaced the battery as well as updating the firmware. One of the 8591E had the battery on the main board the other must be a newer 8591E has the battery on a daughter board with the ram and a super cap so a lot easier to change. I don’t think you will find the 991130 it only changes from HP to Agilent logo so I am told but I did update to 980615 it has some bug fixes.

My unit 8663a has been working perfectly but the original power supply has taken out the switching power transistors again. Your solution sounds the most practical solution to this vulnerability.

So considering all the RBWs with the Log path are off, should I search for a fault in the A14 Log amplifier Assy? Or do you still think it's somewhere in the filters??
I could try to do the 7. Log and Linear Amplifier adjustments in the service manual.?
I could have that made, it will take some time though. Feels a bit overdone just to get a signal from a header too.?

One other remark, i'm assuming it doesn't matter but I had a look at the firmware version, my unit seems to be on rev 950914, the newest seems to be 991130, normally i'd say If it's not broken don't update it...

MG has some interesting alternatives, some even more expensive than the Deoxit offerings (!!). For instance, the 801B. I still rely mostly on the Deoxit, but in some?cases (high impedance?instrumentation?circuitry, low levels/metrology), I try to sort out the issues by just cleaning with IPA, if that works, or ponder?over a wider range of products depending on the application, which includes the MG range. Radu.?

I usually use De-Oxit Gold, except for composition potentiometers, for which there is a special formulation: De-Oxit-F ("F" for fader).

Since the picture you send about BW5 etc went down to 300Hz, I assumed those were the standard RBW settings. But it sounds more plausible anyway that all the standard RBW have the issue and the ones through opt 130 are ok.?
I checked by removing the opt 130 card, you're right. So it's all the RBW settings in Log mode and all the RBW's in Lin mode are ok.?

Without option 130, the last resBW is 1kHz. With option 130: 300,200,100, and 30 Hz ? There a problem with standard resBW. ? ? I just did a quick test of all the filters in Lin and Log mode RBW | Log | Lin | 3M | -5,1 | -20 | 1M | -5,2 | -20 | 300k | -5,2 | -20 | 100k | -5,4 | -20 | 30k | -5,5 | -20 | 10k | -5,4 | -20 | 3k | -5,4 | -20 | 1k | -5,2 | -20 | 300 | -20 | -22 | 100 | -20 | -18 |
So I guess of the regular RBW's only 300Hz is ok in log mode. Most suspicious would probably be BW6 from the picture you sent?? I'll reseat the modules later this evening.?

Marco, ? Both PCBs have the same part number. But in my case, the A13 label on the PCB was for the right location i.e. A13...A11 PCB with A11 location. ? So, I don't see any difference between the PCBs, so there should be no problem. Also, in the manual clip, it's the same schematic for both. ? Yves ? ? I did a reseating of A13 and A11. Again found something interesting. The manual states A13 and A11 are identical boards but A13 is the one nearest to the PSU.? In my analyzer A13 and A11 is written on the coverplate of the modules as can be seen in the photo.? Though both the boards are also labeled themselves, A11 and A13 but they are in the other slots, so the A13 board is in the A11 slot and viceversa: Makes me wonder if a previous owner just swapped the boards or more exchanging and aligning has happened.? Quite tempted to just swap the positions back, what do you think Yves??

You will need to troubleshoot the synthesizer. Start downloading the CLIP from Keysight site.?

It has been a very long time since I worked on these units, but if I recall correctly (IIRC) the switch contacts were silver plated. You should use DE-OXIT contact cleaner and lube on these rotary switches. Alcohol only cleans the dirt and any grease off the switch contacts, but does nothing for any silver oxidation. The DE-OXIT cleans the oxidation (black coating) and leaves a thin oil film that prevents further oxidation. Apply the DE-OXIT and rotate the switched many times and it should resolve any switch issues.
