I have no financially interest in this-but please look up the seller I refer to.He clearly states that their MXA`s have been ``fixed`` regarding options,so no Keysight Lab will service/cal it..The alltest link were just to show that even? Keysight interchange frontpanels logo and installed firmware…. No more from me. Besides I do admire your xdevs site-good work. Best Regards Hardy ? ? And what is the point I missed? If service is done by legit repair lab or Keysight, S/N does not change and it will always be matching. Alltest you linked is a legit unit with everything mathing up nicely, including records in Keysight calibration database, with report available from 1 December 2009. No problems with the machine you linked, unlike any of the chinese units.

EXT is E6607B : They are obviously legit Agilent/Keysight hardware and components, including software and license server. But MXA you see on all those ebay listings are modified units and they run modified license servers, made to work with any serial number and license key. Dead give away available on the screenshots of the listings, where you see machine HostID S/N and actual S/N of the unit not matching up. Legitimate licenses issued by Keysight always match in S/N. If you look very closely you can also see that all these $1-2k MXAs have aftermarket labels, like the font and logos don't match actual factory made Keysight/Agilent N9020A. It's also easy to check by running S/N of converted MXA via Keysight support database to see what it comes back to ;)
Now , do they work as real 3.6GHz MXA? Yes, at least I had all the basic functions behave as expected. But it does not mean they would be supported, serviced or related to Keysight in any official way anymore after such "conversion". :)

Re: HP6643A - Blows Fuse When Activated
What the bulb is doing is limiting the current into the equipment.? All the voltages will be low.
What this is useful for is
1) saving fuses
2) running things at reduced input voltages which, depending on the power supply, may allow you to figure out which supply(s) has/have the shorted capacitor to ground.
Measure ONLY on the output of the supplies and circuitry, DO NOT measure on the directly rectified AC.

Re: HP6643A - Blows Fuse When Activated
All, I finally obtained a proper bulb -- turns out, my GF had an unopened package of 2 60 watt incandescent?bulbs.? Woo hoo.? Finally got the bulb connected after removing the fuse holder.? HOWEVER, now, as soon as I turn the unit on, the bulb goes full bright, and nothing is displayed on the screen anymore.? Not sure if it is booting up "activated" or what.? Definitely not good...worries that the last time it booted something happened and the fuse wasn't fast enough or ....?
Any help is greatly appreciated.??

Re: Seeking HP 80000 Data Generator (aka 2900A) system software
As an update, the HP80K system boot disk creation went well using Stan's files pointers and an old PC.
The mainframe itself appears to have some power supply issues - it'll run briefly and then lock up with all five cards in, and make it 5-10 minutes with only one card seated. During that run time, self tests pass for the CPU board but others fail.
When all cards are in, after boot when the backplane power supply and the internal jet engine main cooling fan start up, the display dims and the CRT raster contracts considerably, which is why I suspect a power issue.

Hi.
I'm new to this group and thought a little introduction is in order.
I am a semi-retired EE, specialized in the design of RFID readers which I have been doing for the past 30+ years.
Not a collector of HP gear per se, but I have aquired the odd bit here and there, most of it has been in storage for the past two or more decades:
HP 3325
HP 3330B with 3570A
HP 141T with 8552A and 8553B sections
HP 3577A
HP 3577A with 35677A
HP 3577B with 35677B
HP 8640B
Agilent 54620C
?
The 54620C is causing me problems: it refuses to start up and only produces a horizontal line on the display.
I looked inside but could not find any obvious defects or smells, or any shorted tantalum caps.
The only thing that stood out just a bit (literally) was the NVRAM module that appears a little bloated.
Photos will be uploaded shortly.
?
Regarding this problem I am left with the following questions:
1) what can cause this behaviour?
2) is there any essential (like calibration) data in that RAM, i.o.w. can I just replace it?
3) if there is essential data there, how do I go about to refres/place that data?
?
It all boils down to the ultimate question: is there hope of restoring it or is it a basket case?

Help me understand the 8510C memory boards
Hello,
I have a question related to the 8510C and more specifically related to the Display Unit 85101C.
I noticed that there are 2 memory cards with the same part number 85101-60238 but they are not the same.
These cards have places for 2 rows of 16 EEPROMs Xicor X28HC256P but some are soldered and some are empty sockets.
Same part number has 26 EEPROMs soldered and 6 empty sockets and another card has 24 soldered EEPROMs and 8 empty sockets. EEPROM is the same type on both cards so practically one card has less memory.
Unfortunately my card is the one with 8 empty sockets.
What is this card used for? Can I add the extra EEPROMs in the empty sockets? Do I need to reinstall the firmware of the 8510C?
I plan to run both 8530A and 8510C firmware. I have the PAL ICs for both.
For reference there is a picture attached with both cards.
Thanks, Razvan

Hi Leo, Welcome to the Group! Unfortunately, I can't help you with your 'scope problem because I'm not familiar with the HP 54620C.I do remember that we met around 10 years ago at your place where I picked up a Tek 2440 manual set that you offered. I hope you can revive your 54620C!

Stan, > I found this zip file in my stash. To generate the diskettes you'll need a PC that can run LIFUTIL.exe. I hope this is what you need!
Thanks for the help!? I'll try creating the boot disks tonight - I have an older PC with a disk controller that still works with LIFUTIL (as well as an HPIB ISA adapter & external 9122C drive), so one of those should do the trick.
( I see in my browser history that I had visited the KO4BB , but IIRC I just had searched the web page for 80000 rather than using the site search...)

Hi Yes-sure they are from ATE racks-mobile test. Regarding cosmetics one have to be very cautious-some do not look well,Ask for specific pictures of the unit, not just a -sample!!! The seller I use can help with options. The MXA have different displays-an old ccfl, and a much brighter led version. All units I see at ebay have the new.Think most units displays have been turned off. Hardy ? ? Thanks! Is it possible to find out any history of the MXA analysers from the seller? I would assume that nearly all of these analysers would have been used in ATE racks for the testing of mobile phone related stuff. If so, they could be in very good condition cosmetically. I'm not sure how many hours they will have been running for in the ATE racks but some could have been running 24/7 for quite a while. This probably doesn't matter that much though. It wouldn't put me off buying one if I was looking for a decent 3.6GHz spectrum analyser.
At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, I can't emphasise enough just how good these MXA analysers are. ?1500 is a great price, especially if the noise figure drive is fitted to them as standard.
Any missing software options can usually be added for free after the purchase. I suspect some of the sellers will have already done this, because it should be easy to generate the licence codes.

HP 8920B Receiver Problems
I've got an HP 8920B in very good physical condition (except for a couple of scratches on the top, it almost looks new).? So it doesn't look like it's been out in the field much, if ever.
I purchased it used about 5 1/2 years ago.? It's serial number is US38384496.? It has options 001, 004,013, 014, 016, 020, 051, and 102.
In running the internal function tests, it's showing up a couple of errors:
Receiver Assembly Test - Down Converters (With Spectrum Analyzer) Description: 500 Mhz (114.3 Mhz IF) shows -5.4 dbm Actual Level, where it should be between -4.5 dbm and +4.5 dbm
SSB Frequency Description: Demod SSB Freq shows Actual Frequency at .063162 Khz, where it should be between .99 Khz and 1.01 Khz.
I've never worked much on service monitors and have never worked on one of these.? But I do have a lot of years (over 45) of troubleshooting and repairing commercial two-way radio equipment at the component level.
I've started to look over the service manual, but I wondered if someone might have some pointers that could help me run down the problems in this monitor, considering my lack of experience with it.
