Re: HP8510 loosing detection above 20GHz
Is there a design behind HP's option numbering ?
I used to have a spectrum analyser plugin (8558. I think) with an H-something option, which in that case indicated a 75 ohm input and, iirc, dBuV scales for use in cable TV work. But purchase options usually seem to be numeric only.?

Re: Another dead 8753D YTO
Greetings,
?
Given the YTO weak link, I purchased an Aventek ASF-8347 off eBay as an insurance policy for my 8753D opt-11.
?
a) To repair a B or C version you might get away with a 4-8GHz YTO, if it manages to have enough output power at 3.8GHz. I would certainly take my chances on this. But probably not for a 8753D/E/ES/ET 6GHz replacement which requires enough output power at 3GHz. I guess some 4-8GHz YTO won't even oscillate at 3GHz.I wanted to confirm that it covers the required 3.8 to 6.8 GHz, it clearly does and then some. The linearity is quite remarkable:
?
And plenty of power out as well:?
?
Just an FYI on this particular model.?

All thanks for your support.

David: I'm searching for such a special connector to build a HP85102B testkit, W.I.P.
Could be that the hard stop has to do with bandswitching in the HP8340A, I don't know the bandlimits, but as said it works perfectly with another HP85102B. I could not find the BST for the synthesizer, is this in the HP8510 service menu ? ?
Patricio: The strange thing is that the whole system works perfectly up-to 26.5GHz with only a different IF-Detector HP85102B.
I measured the 26.5GHz RF level of the Sweeper HP8340A, this is just below 20dBm, so quite strong.? I also observed the 20MHz level on a1 and a2: starting at a RF of 1GHz it drops constantly till the highest frequency 26.5GHz. But this is what we should expect as the harmonic mixing output goes down with 20LOG(n), I don't know what 20MHz amplitude I should expect on a1 and a2 (above 20G) |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI¡¯ve a 8510C I¡¯ve the same problem twice . The first time was the YTO on test set . The second time the multiplier and amplifier module on sweeper. In both cases the SRDs failed. Is the most common death cause in this great equipment. ?The power loose on the higher band happens slowly , you can check it on test set performing the basic test using the raw parameters a1 a2 ¡ as described on service manual. For sweeper the maximum leveled output power goes down above 20GHz ¡ should be more than 7dBm at 26.5 GHz for 83630A ( or similar ) model.?Both modules are becoming hard to find. They are available on repaired version from Keysight at absolutely expensive prices.? I observed that this deterioration are proportional to working hours, the frequency range is also implortant as higher frequency there are more stress on SRDs . To provide an excellent stability I used to left the instrument on 24/7 ¡ now I take care to reduce the working hours to minimum.? Regards , Patricio? Ing. Patricio A. Re: HP8510 loosing detection above 20GHz
Have you ran the Built in Self test from the software menu (22 Service Program) ?
You need a special widget (Service Adapter) to check the IF box with it's 10 test paths; then you can check the RF+IF boxes full path(s) with high confidence.
?
There is also BIST for the synthesizer, which is worth a try for your symptom.
For a 20-26GHz issue, it's probably the Synth or RF Samplers (mixers). |

Hi Allan, I wrote down what I did with my DA30C here:? It has a link to the disk image I retrieved. It only has the DOS software, sadly enough.. Re: HP8510 loosing detection above 20GHz
What do you mean by "exactly above 20 GHz?" When I hear exactly for a number, I have to think a digital decision may have been made, according to specs or such. Maybe there's some kind of model specific things limiting the range unless it's enabled somehow.

Good morning, I just stumbled across this looking for the exact same thing.
I have a DA-30C that the RTC battery, Floppy drive and HDD had died. I have it up and running dos again but lost all the W&G specific software.
?
FritsJ, how did you go with re-setting up your DA-30C?
Bernhard Wulf, Would I be able to get a copy of your DA-30 HDD too?

HP8510 loosing detection above 20GHz
After a long endeavor and with much help of several goups.io members to repair my HP8510 system, I'm now start to see light in the tunnel.
?
With a borrowed HP85102B as IF-Detector the system? works perfectly, up-to the max 26.5GHz
When I use my own HP85102B in the same setup, It works almost OK up to 20GHz (only small glitches) but when the sweep comes exactly above 20GHz the trace is lost (full scale noise). I checked the gain of A9-A11-A13-A14 IF-Mixer's and they seems OK. I also replaced all PNP's in one of modules but without effect. ?
An amplitude or VTO pre-tune issue ????
?
Anyone experience with this strange behavior ?

Re: Another dead 8753D YTO
Hi Scott,
?
I'll try answer your questions.
Let me first explain the differences between HP8753B & C and newer versions such as D/E/ES/ET.
?
B&C achieves its RF output by mixing a fixed YIG oscillator at 3.8GHz and a YIG Tune Oscillator sweeping between 3.8-6.8GHz. This gives a range of 0-3GHz. The 6GHz option on the B & C versions are done by a frequency doubler.
?
D and newer versions also uses a 3.8GHz YIG oscillator and without the 6 GHz option the YTO sweeps between 3.8-6.8GHz just as the B&C versions. But the D/E/ES/ET 6 GHz does not utilize a frequency double, instead it uses the YTO directly without mixing, i.e. the 6GHz option requires the YTO to be able to sweep between 3-6.8GHz.
?
For more details regarding this I recommend reading the "theory of operation chapters" in the service manuals for respective model.
?
Simon's excellent documentation refers to HP8753C, I have repaired a HP8753D so the YTO requirements differs.
?
1) I have not tried to decode YIG part numbers, some manufacturers have frequency range in the model number, some don't, some does but only on certain model series.
?
a) To repair a B or C version you might get away with a 4-8GHz YTO, if it manages to have enough output power at 3.8GHz. I would certainly take my chances on this. But probably not for a 8753D/E/ES/ET 6GHz replacement which requires enough output power at 3GHz. I guess some 4-8GHz YTO won't even oscillate at 3GHz.
?
My experience is that many YTO works in a similar way with their current consumption and how they need to be controlled. For me the HP economy YTOs are the exception with not requiring negative voltage and only consume less than half the main coil current.
?
b) See above.
c) probably, the Wiltron YTO I used tunes over 2.5GHz-8GHz. The thing is to make the A11 controller give the correct amount of current for the desired frequency.
d) See above
e) No idea
?
I would not buy a original replacement unless it was guaranteed that is has been refurbished. Otherwise it will break sooner than later.
?
Smart people: I relied heavily the work of Simon and had some help from a friend that knows electronics well, I just know enough to know when to ask for help.
?
Best regards

Re: HP instrument sticky case panel surface
When I got my 8510C system, it was a severe case of sticky covers, all of the boxes.
I have tried many recommended detergents with increasing solvent strength which didn't work for me:
household detergent => no
ethanol, isopropanol => no
WD40 => no
Gasoline => no
What finally worked for me was Orange Terpene.
?
The sticky stuff is bleeding out of the plastic. It doesn't automatically happen with age.
I have identical covers that are older and not sticky at all. It must have to do with other stuff in the surrounding atmosphere during storage.

Re: HP 3586 counter reading high
Paul,
I would like to offer another solution for dealing with the drift caused by the crystal controlled oscillators associated with the HP3586B's Product Detector. My method completely eliminates the drift problem and requires only a minor modification to pick off the 15,625 Hz I.F. signal within the 3586B, or any of the 3586 series SLM's. This method only requires a change in how you go about making absurdly accurate frequency measurements. See: Burt, K6OQK Burt I. Re: HP instrument sticky case panel surface
I have successfully removed the sticky surfaces that developed on the top and bottom panels of my old HP equipment by cleaning the panel surface with a solution of simple green. I keep the Simple Green concentrate in my stock of cleaning products so that I can mix various strengths for various tasks the strongest being a 1:1 mix for heavy de-greasing. Even that strong solution did not damage the panel. I followed up with a wipe down with water and, years later, the sticky film has not returned. Of course, the panel was removed from the instrument before cleaning. |
