Hi Richard

Thank you for your input but I think the Dave's were having a laugh at my expense as I hade reduced Application notes to a shortened version?

Regarding being lost in time its meaning has changed to mean small executable programmes as used on smart cell phones

Perhaps the (apps on phones) executable programmes should have been called EPs now I think that would have confused the 苍别飞产颈别’蝉

Hello Folks,

first of all, thank you for all the flowers. If anyone of you wants to subscribe to my YouTube, I am thankful - at the moment, I post more 3D printing stuff, but will return to Electronics soon enough.

As for the 53310A: mine recently developed the "plague", showing weird software errors. But this has since gone away again...I posted about it some time ago, but got no responses at the time.

As for the PSU: IMHO, the company making these got burnt in the big Capacitor plague. So all of them will fail eventually - if not today, then in a month. My former lab gypsy has a friend who decided to wait it out, and her PSU was almost impossible to fix...in the end, we deduced that a crawl current across the electrolyte made one of the voltage regulators horny somehow...turned out to be a nasty repair.

For counting, my go-to combination is a 5335A with a 5340A (LED, but have the obligatory Nixie for eye-candy) for the high end.? While I love the accuracy the 53310a brings to frequency, rise time and jitter, it's that those are only a few of the things you can use it to determine and also how many options it allows you to approach any given criteria.? The more you use it, the more things you think of to use it for.? Many may not necessarily be the best way to solve a particular problem, but just the fact you are taking a different approach can open up new ways of thinking and solutions... it tends to make me say "Huh... How about that?" a lot.

Tam: you are right, but at least the repairs to the PSU and such is pretty easily done.? Also, there are several products HP came out with around then that share the same case... and power supply.? From what I've read, there are several revisions of the PSU and not all are as prone to failure as some.? That is from a couple references and I sure wish I remembered which ones; only preemptively replace the caps on the troublesome versions?

Re options, my daily driver has all of them and I just bought the SRAM to bring my other three up to the deep memory (I scored a deal on a batch of four locally.)? Of those only one has PS issues and, while the replacement caps have been bought, I just haven't had time to get into it - I work for a Gov contractor and evidently schedules haven't heard much about pandemics yet ;-)

On the plus side, I just walked in back and saw a pallet of 12 3458A's and 4 Fluke 5522A's... pure nerd porn.

Re: Agilent 8753es Option 11 and TDR Measurements...

Burt,
? ? ?I think that the minimum you can get by with for TDR measurements with option 10 is a splitter and a coupler (or bridge).? (That is most of a T/R test set).? The source connector feeds the splitter, which then feeds the R channel and the coupler.? The coupler connects to the DUT, and the coupled reflected signal from the DUT connects to the A channel.? There are cheap ($12) 3GHz bridges on eBay that would probably do for a start.? You would also need short, open, and load standards for whatever sort of connectors your DUT has.? You can look up how to make your own standards.
? ? ?If you find a dual directional coupler that covers the frequencies you are interested in, you can skip the splitter.? The forward coupled path goes to the R input, the reverse coupled path goes to A.

Re: HP 652A Dial Calibration

I agree, it's not a good idea to start bending plates on that big three-way air variable capacitor.? Once done there's really no way to go back, and I suspect you'd be likely to make things worse rather than better.

The HP 651 has a complex frequency-calibration procedure in the service manual.? Adjusting the calibration on some bands requires changing out a pair of selected-at-manufacture-time resistors on the bandswitch.? For some other band there's an adjustment capacitor.? I believe that the 652 has the same architecture, and I'd recommend following the manual instructions carefully if you decide to do this.

One thing it would probably be good to do first... measure, record, and plot the actual frequencies on each of the bands at each major digit position.? By comparing the bands you may be able to see whether there's an overall shift in the calibration affecting most or all of the bands (which would point to a dial-positioning or main-capacitor issue) or whether some bands are shifted differently than others (which might suggest that the band-specific resistors or caps are out of whack).

The 651B is only spec'ed to 2% frequency accuracy on some bands and 3% on others, so exact dial calibration can't really be expected.

Oh... make sure that you take your measurements with the cabinet lid and base on and the screws tightened, as the manual advises.? There's a very significant frequency and calibration shift if you take off the lid... the parasitic capacitance from the active circuit to the case is part of the equation!

Also, check the tuning cap for contamination (dust, etc.) - if there's any present it could throw things off.? I bought a 651 which was quite balky and wouldn't oscillate at all in some portions of the dial range (on any band).? I found some dark gunk on the plates, and splashed in a few places around the base of the capacitor... looked as if somebody had spattered Coca Cola on it.? It took a good, careful water-wash to get it out (and then a spritz with contact cleaner to flush out the water, and some blown air to dry it properly) and now it oscillates and tracks nicely.? (It also had the "HP grease turns to cement with age" problem, and I had to do a strip-down/clean/lubricate much as you did.)
