I may be thrown off the hp_agilent list for suggesting it, but in addition
to Lothar's good advice, you might also look at the Tek 492AP/494P/494AP
models. They are inexpensive, portable, and well-documented, they work well
with external mixers, and most important, they are readily user-serviceable
with many options for obtaining spare parts.
I'm not that big a fan of the HP 8590s, because they tend to cost more than
the competitive Tek analyzers while offering few advantages. You get a
better display, and somewhat better reliability, but that's about it. For
home use, the ability to repair and calibrate your own equipment is
extremely important. All of this gear -- Tek and HP alike -- has long since
been orphaned by its manufacturer, and it WILL eventually need servicing.

can anybody advise on the 8592B. This is a non synthesized,
preselected but relatively recent microwave analyzer. I have a buying
opportunity for 3000 EUR, which would be like 3000 on the US market. I
feel this is
a bit too much, for a non-synthesized analyzer with 1kHz+ RBW.
My interest are primary 24, 47 and 76 G amateur radio. (This analyser
doe not direcly support mixers, one needs to downconvert the signal
externally). Used 8566b's are around 5k here, 8563a's around 6.5k.
Thanks for any advice.
