How the transition from Yahoo to groups.io will take place - exactly when I don't know

Dr. David Kirkby

Lots of people have been moaning about the Yahoo group, and as some of you know, I am going to make the transfer, having been given the permissions from the owner of this group. (I'm now an owner too). I thought I'd post here how the process will take place, so nobody is in any doubt.

The HP/Agilent/Keysight forum

/g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment

has been set up, with the following email addresses.

Group Email Addresses

If you want to post to [email protected] now you can, but be aware there are only 19 members at present, so you might not get much response.

Only post there if you want to start a NEW topic - do NOT try to continue something that started on the Yahoo group. Topics already on Yahoo will be copied there later.

I would suggest that people just use the Yahoo group for now, unless it breaks badly again. Several people have unsubscribed from this list in the last couple of days, but they have subscribed to [email protected].

The transition process has been initiated, but I don't know when I will be able to make the transfer. Groups.io say 1-2 days, but I received an email from someone who had transferred multiple groups, who advised me the delays are longer than that now. (Perhaps there has been a massive movement of groups, and can't keep up!)

There are multiple ways of moving a group, each having their own advantages and disadvantages. At least two are:

a) Copy the Yahoo group to [email protected], running both groups for a while, so there is no downtime. The downside of that is that a subject can start in this Yahoo forum, then run in parallel on two forums, with some people posting in Yahoo, and some posting to [email protected]. That will be a bit of a mess.

b) Have someone downtime,? which is obviously an inconvenience, but it will allow a cleaner copy of material from one group to the other.

I've decided to go the second route, so there will be some downtime.

When the time is ready, and I'm able to make the transfer, I'm intending the following to happen, but of course, things can go wrong.

1) I will announce in this HP/Agilent Yahoo group that the group is moving and will be offline for some time. I will *request* nobody post messages after that point.

2) I will wait several hours, to give any messages that were sent a chance to get to the Yahoo group, as I understand there are some delays in this happening. (24 hours should be .safe, but is obviously an inconvenience to others, so it will probably be less than 24 hours. I will make a judgement on that later.).

3) I will then set the Yahoo group so that messages bounce.

4) I will then hit transfer on , which will mean a copy from the Yahoo group will commence. Anyone who is subscribed to the HP/Agilent Yahoo list will get their subscription information copied over. I don't know how long that copy will take, but with a big list, it might take some time, as every post ever made needs to be copied over, plus anything in the files section. If Yahoo play nasty, they could make the transfer rate very slow!

5) Once the transfer is complete, everyone will be able to post to [email protected] and nobody to the Yahoo group.

6) The contents of the Yahoo group will not be deleted. So there should be two copies of every message ever sent - one on the Yahoo group and one on /g/HP-Agilent-Keysight-equipment

7) Users who are transferred should NOT have any posts held for moderation.

8) Once the group is running properly, any new subscribers will need to have two posts approved by a moderator to reduce spam . There will be at least one moderator in the UK and at least one in the USA. That should enable posts to be quickly approved, irrespective of when posted. It has worked well for /g/Test-Equipment-For-Sale-Wanted-or-Exchange/topics so anyone posting to [email protected] should get this posts quickly approved.

All being well, once the transfer has been completed, there should be no need for people to subscribe in order to post to [email protected], as their details will have been copied over. But for now at least that's not the case.

As people know, plans can go wrong, and things might not work out exactly as I intend, and might take a bit longer than people would like. But based on the best information I have to date, the above seems the best approach. Staying on Yahoo does not seem a viable option, and the decesion to move has been taken.
