Dave Jones on eevblog reckons you need a sample rate of 10 times the
maximum frequency you want to display in single shot mode. Can't say I
disagree with him on that. So a sample rate of 40MS/s can realistically
only display a 4MHz signal.
IMO, you simply cannot trust what you see on the screen of a sampling
scope.
I've had my TDS210 show square waves when undersampling a sinusoid if I
forget to set it to peak detect.
