As a 'home gamer' without any budget, the orphaned marques like Solartron, Prema, or Wavetek-Datron seem the most appealing. I'd even take Marconi or Racal-Dana if they had produced a decent 7.5 DMM, but I don't think they did.

Modular LED displays do seem the most appropriate, but I can't be picky on a budget of only a few hundred USD on this. I would roll my own Arduino alphanumeric LCD if it would save me $1000 or so, but I would rather not do that.
