Take a small flat screwdriver with as thin a blade as you can find, and jam it in on an edge of the trim strip. You have to gouge (or even hammer) it into the joint far enough to pry and bend out the edge of the strip. A utility knife can sometimes work, but usually just snaps the tip off the blade, so a screwdriver is best. Good luck.
