I can see some members of this forum have successfully upgraded their 8341b from 1988 to 1992 firmware. I'm trying to do the same but it isn't working :(
The CPU board in my 8341b has 4 EPROMS, so I downloaded the 8340 .bin files from K04BB. I bought 4 used EPROMs exactly same model as what is already in my 8341b. And I paid someone to program the firmware into them for me. I fitted them but the instrument wouldn't boot (random characters marching across the screen error).
I refitted the original EPROMS and the unit did then boot, but it had lost/corrupted the cal constants and I had to enter these back in from the sheet of paper. It works normally now with the original EPROMS fitted, but I can't understand why the new firmware didn't work ?
Serial prefix is 2891
Is there some hardware update that is also required ? or could there be a problem with the new EPROM programming ?
This should work I think. I'm not aware of any incompatibilities between
the '92 firmware and a 2891 prefix. I did a quick scan of the manual
too, and nothing jumped out. There's a manual change for serial number
prefix 2804A:
Firmware changes reflected on the A60 processor assembly and revisions
to the A58 sweep generator assembly.
But, your unit is later than that. Also, I upgraded my 2910A 8341B to
'92 firmware and it worked fine. Possible issues:
1. EPROMs are bad
2. individual didn't UV erase them before programming
3. individual didn't program them correctly
If you doubt the quality of the programming, I have a very high-quality
programmer (Data I/O UniSite) and can do it for the cost of round-trip
shipping to me. Unfortunately it looks like you're in the UK and I'm in
the US, so shipping may not be so cheap.
