Most of the CBTTape software is in XMIT format.

Most likely not, unless you have publicly registered your internal IP address on the Internet, which I guess is possible of course but very unlikely.??? You would want to use either a internal DNS server or a hosts list, or simply specify the IP directly and not use DNS for a lookup.

?

Personally I would just specify a IP directly and not attempt to use DNS until you get it working and then use an internal to your private network DNS but that is once you have it operational.

These are 3390-54 volumes that are about 3/4 full, so they will contain more then 4GB of data.

Probably a stupid question - concerning Master Catalog Passwords

开云体育

Sorry to ask another, probably stupid question and take up space but – I am at a loss to understand this and assume others have not had this issue.

?

Jay Mosley’s instuctions homebuilt MVS3.8j system – working perfectly.???? Master Catalog – ‘sys1.vsam.master.catalog’ has as part of the build process a updatepw set to the value of SYSPROG – I understand the value of doing this.

?

Any Batch jobs making a modification, console prompts me for the password – a reply to the message like? R12, SYSPROG works perfectly, the job is successful, obvious the password is working perfectly.???? Have written several JCL jobs that allocate a dataset or whatever that requires an update and they work fine.

?

Here’s the issue ----?? In TSO, either with a ALLOC or where I first found this and thought I was stupid, in RPF 4.2 Allocate a dataset – set what I want, enter A – Get a clear screen, prompt for the Catalog password – I enter it, letter by letter carefully – get a response of *** and allocation failed.?? Try it in uppercase, lowercase, won’t work.?? Same at the TSO command prompt using ALLOC – it will not accept the password.

?

Thought it was just me being stupid – but I conducted the following test, I wrote/ran a IDCAMS job, ALTER to NULLIFY the password, submitted it as a batch job, console notified me, entered the pw, success RC=0 -?? Now no password

?

Tried using RPF 3.2 again -? works like a charm – same with ALLOC.

?

Is there some secret to entering the password interactively???? Is something wrong with my build of MVS??? And I just insane??? I would like to put the password back but I also need for things like ind$file to be able to enter it at a TSO prompt and have it accepted.

?

I assume most of you all use a Master Catalog password but no hits googling this issue, so that means I am doing something wrong, but what?

?

Thanks,

Dave – N8ZFM

Interesting. I hadn't really noticed that myself. Of course, I never bothered to time it either, so I'll have to take your word for it.

I doubt it.

I have offload turned off for the physical windows TCPIP
adapter, and in my zos TCPIP parms I also have nochecksumoffload
specified, but no other TCPIP config parms relating to the OSA
adapter, I just let them all default.
Which is fine. The checksum offload setting would only affect the speed of the transfer (not having it enabled slows things down a wee bit), but should not affect the memory leak issue (IF, that is, that is indeed what the problem really is! I'm only speculating (guessing) at this point!).

Although I suppose it's possible that the leak (if that's what it is!) could be in the checksum offloading handling logic of whoever's got the leak (host or guest).

In any case, this *is* somewhat interesting.

I'm not going to waste any of my own time/effort digging into this issue myself, but if it becomes a serious problem, I would report it (either to IBM or Hercules, whoever's at fault) so it can be investigated and fixed.

Maybe there is another way to transfer the dasd than using ADRDSSU
on both sides. I had heard that some people use CCKDDASD but have
not tried that.
I believe you mean CCKDDUMP/CCKDLOAD, not CCKDDASD. :)

Yes, there is the CCKDDUMP/CCKDLOAD(*) technique that Mike Schwab mentioned in his reply to you that can offload (dump) a dasd on z/OS to a very large dataset (which can then be xfer'ed to your Hercules host using whatever means desired) and then turned into a Hercules CCKD (or CCKD64) dasd using Hercules's CCKDLOAD utility, but I personally have very little knowledge of it or experience with it.

Hope that helps!

---------------------
(*) CCKDDUMP/CCKDLOAD for legacy 32-bit CCKD dasd, or CCKDDU64/CCKDLO64 for 64-bit CCKD64 dasd. I think there's a .zip file in our 'util' directory. I believe the late great Greg Smith originally wrote it, followed by me and then someone else who made (or tried to make!) changes needed to support 64-bit CCKD64 dasds, but that's about all I know about it. I've never actually ever tried to use it myself.

Re: Whats the best way to transfer dasd from z/os to Hercules

Hi Brian,
?
If you are just talking about a small handful of datasets, you could set up an NJE link between the two systems using TCPNJE, and transmit and receive them.? This is probably the easiest.
?
If it is a lot of datasets, then I'd use ADRDSSU to create a big sequential file containing all of your datasets, and then use a utility called AWSUTIL, which is a mainframe assembler piece of code that takes a sequential file and makes an .aws tape image out of it.? Then you can FTP the tape image to your PC and it can be input directly into Hercules and the guest there could run ADRDSSU again to recreate the datasets.? In the past Ive also successfully used IEBCOPY to unload my personal PDS's to a sequential file followed by AWSUTIL, then FTP that result to my PC and then reload the PDS's right from the .aws tape into Hercules.
?
For en entire volume, CCKDDUMP also works.? The resulting file is already Hercules ready, so simply FTP the CCKDDUMP result to your PC, and use it in Hercules like any other dasd image file. My experience with CCKDDUMP was before CCKD64 so I can't speak to the latest.
?
In no case did I ever use TERSE.
?
Regards,
Bob

Hello Brian,

I assume you'r talking about copying data(sets) between your Hercules guest OS and host OS? Host OS being the operating system you run Hercules on. We don't know about your specific setup. :-)

One method is to use ADRDSSU to backup the dasd to a dataset, then TERSE that dataset to another tersed file and send it to your PC in binary format and then send that to Hercules via FTP also in binary format, then unterse it under Hercules, and then restore it via ADRDSSU, but I'm thinking there must be some better way to do this.
Nut sure what you mean by the set "send it to your PC and then send that to Hercules".

What is the greater goal you want to achieve? Knowing that could help us to help you.

The above process takes a lot of time and I have "heard" that there are other ways that work well, but don't know what they are.
You can always do like in the olden days and use magnetic tape to transfer data.

Simply backup the dataset(s) onto what occurs to your guest OS as a tape drive. There need to be some preparations on your host OS side, though. Precisely: You need to do the Hercules equivalent to walking to the tape drive and insert/load a tape reel. Although that can be automated more or less easily, depending on your host OS.

In any case, you can transfer, archive or whatever said tape file, and easily reattach to the same or another Hercules instance to copy the data back.

:wq! PoC

David wrote:

would that be configured?
Hi David!

Well, I haven't tried it myself (because I only have one network adapter), but I would think all you would have to do would be to specify a different 'iface' value. E.g.:

0400.3 OSA CHPID F0 iface 192.168.0.1 ipaddr 192.168.1.6 netmask 255.255.0.0
0404.3 OSA CHPID F0 iface 172.16.0.1 ipaddr 172.16.1.6 netmask 255.255.0.0

where 192.168.0.1 identifies the ip address of your HOST's first network adapter, and 172.16.0.1 of course would be the ip address of your HOST's *second* network adapter. The other ip addresses (specified for the 'ipaddr' option) would be the ip addresses of your z/OS or z/VM, etc, guest, running under Hercules.

Note: the above presumes you're running Hercules on Windows. If you're running it on Linux, the format (syntax) of your OSA device statement would be slightly different, as explained on our web page:

*

"iface device"

"Specifies, on Linux, the name of the host tunnel device to use.
On Windows, this required option identifies your Windows system's
actual network adapter. On Linux, the value should be specified
by name (e.g. /dev/net/tun). On Windows, the value should be
specified by either IP or MAC address."

Your question is an interesting one, David! I don't know of any user that has actually tried doing what you are wanting to do! Please DO let us know whether you are able to get it working!

Thanks!

I know that Hercules is an Emulator... But, is-there a way to improve Java performances when used under Hercules / z/OS ?
