Hi Mark,

You missed the same typo on page 16.
I have uploaded a new version of the manual.

Following on from my post dated December 13th, I had a spare hour this evening, and I downloaded the "The DL/I" system (AKA, I believe, IMS/360); I did the stage 1 and stage 2 sysgen to install the DB-only system on TK4-, and everything appears to have gone well. Of course, I have no idea whether it's going to work OK because I don't have an IMS DB application that I can run to test it.

So, a question: does anyone out there have a sample IMS DB application that I could get hold of, or do you know where I can find one (perhaps some very old IMS/360 manual or something?). It would have to be not only the programs themselves, but also the control blocks and some data to load a DL/I database.

If I can find one then I'll see whether it will run on MVS.

Re: DLI loading on Tk4 and MVSCE?

Andre, Kevin, and everyone:

When IMS/360 first came out, there was no "IMS/DB" -- there was only the batch DL/1 (IMS/DB) component... the IMS/DB/DC (data communications) came later, after IMS had transitioned from a TYPE II program to a full-fledged IBM "program product."? ?(APL\360, CICS and IMS were, IIRC, the first three IBM software products to be packaged and licensed as "program products.")

We now have INTERCOMM, that can act as an IMS/DC or CICS replacement, and has a "database interface" so that it could be made to work with DL/1, if we can get that going.? :-)? ? INTERCOMM is a part of the MVS-TK5 distribution.? ?INTERCOMM was a popular alternative to CICS in the early days.

You must run the DL/1 job in a V=R (ADDRSPC=REAL) address space, because OSAM used channel end appendages, since that old version of DL/1 was meant for MVT ... V=R gives you much closer compatibility with MVT with regard to things like use of channel programs and channel end appendages, etc.

Also, it should not be a problem to run the DL/1 in a V=R region, while INTERCOMM is running in a normal V=V region, as the INTERCOMM database interface is designed to work with separate jobs and provides an SVC to provide for inter-region communications.

Hope that helps,

To Kevin Monceaux,

Please see third reply in this thread.
There is link to restored tape with source code library dataset.

Best wishes,

It don't think it will work, unless someone has found a way to work around
the OSAM appendage issue. If I remember correctly, the OSAM appendage is
incompatible with MVS, and the source code library on the tape is
incomplete.

I managed to get it running on MVT many moons ago. Unfortunately I put it
aside for too many years, didn't make adequate notes, and attempts to get it
running again on MVT have been less than successful. It's been a few years
since I last tried. Maybe I should give it another shot one of these years.

The first time around, I did create a very simple contact address/phone
number database. I took a list of given names, surnames, street names,
etc., and used them to generate random data to insert into the database.
The jobs I used, containing the programs, random data, etc., can be found

I believe Jay has it as a separate download. I have a Jay based build with it installed.

Re: Hercules and Linux

Hello!
To quote, :"I agree!". At first I would collect the source code for
Hercules and work out how to build it to work inside my Slackware
Linux setup. For a while earlier, during a specific sequence of events
for MVS's quiet neighbor, VM, I'd grab specific special RPM builds and
use the Slackware tool rpm2tgz and then install that Slackware
package. A later while past I'd manage to find one enthusiast's
Slackware build script for a package and then use that. With the
advent of WSL on this newer and stranger version of Windows, it's a
little more difficult but just as interesting.

Now I'm more of a hardware person, with Hercules being a very
effective emulator, I've focused on the other world that of software.
Which brings me to my next question, has anyone managed to bring up
the latest MVS arrangement under a known working VM one?

Mascots are not MVS people.

It has been the position of the Hercules developers for some time that
Hercules would be delivered for Linux and other *NIX platforms in
source form only and Hercules would be _built_ on the platform on which
it is to run.

Delivering a pre-built Linux executable of Hercules is in direct
opposition of that position. (Buyer and seller beware.)

This does not apply to Windows. Windows, on the other hand, is
expected to be delivered to users as a pre-built executable. (Beware
