We are talking about free space at the end of PDS allocated space
80 x 31 = 2480 bytes. It is continuous space and it is empty. Interblock gap cannot be this big.
Please re-read the question, and re-read my previous answer, where i have added a picture.

Also 256 bytes is a directory block, not a data block.
Here is the quote from message you pointed to:
