Photos Question

A few years ago, I disabled the photo feature for the group I run. Reason being that whenever a photo or image was shared and responses were sent to the group no one ever remembered to delete the photo/image in their response. As a result, by every week’s end there was a large amount of them to be deleted and then it could only be done one at a time. I do hope that has changed and more can be deleted at once.

Would like to give the group a second chance now but cannot find a link to restoring that option.
Your help and advice is needed, please.

Maria

I doubt that disabling the Photos feature is accomplishing what you hoped it would.
?
Disabling Photo albums does nothing to keep photo attachments from accumulating. You may not be able to look at them in an Emailed Photos folder anymore, but they are still there, using up your storage allocation.
?
The only way to keep that from happening is to moderate messages that contain attachments and delete the dupes.

I do hope that has changed and more can be deleted at once.
There have been no recent changes to how photos can be deleted.

Bruce

Bruce,

Thank you very much for your quick response and information.

Are the photos still there if I deleted every one of them individually, then the albums?
Could not find them anywhere afterwards.?

I did not know about moderating messages with attachments back then. If I get this going
again I will be sure to do that. Will make things much easier. Appreciate that and?
all of your help.

Again, thank you very much, Bruce!

Once you delete them, they are gone.
?
Actual "albums" can be deleted in one go. You don't have to do that photo by photo. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/7120?
?
Emailed Photos is not an "album," but a convenient way to gain access to photo attachments. As such, I'm pretty sure it can't be deleted...at least not permanently.

I did not know about moderating messages with attachments back then. If I get this going
again I will be sure to do that.
?
From the "Message Formatting" section of the owner's manual:

Attachments

This setting controls whether attachments are allowed with group messages. Select the option you want to apply:

  • Allow
  • Bounce
  • Strip
  • Moderate

The system flags messages that include attachments for moderation, regardless of other moderation settings in the group.

Note:?The “Override: not moderated” setting for individual members takes precedence over this attachment setting. That is, even if attachments are moderated for the group through this setting, attachments sent by members whose posting privilege is set to “Override: not moderated” will not be moderated.

Bruce

The Emailed Photos cannot be deleted as a whole, only one at a time.? However, if you have Photos disabled, you won't be able to see the Emailed Photos area, though they're still there.? The only way to delete them then is to go to each message and do it there.

Which is a real pain in the neck because you can't go to the "Emailed Photos" album to find them!
?
In a group with 150,000 messages, it is kind of a no-starter.

You can disable the Photos for members but leave it available for Owners/Mods so you can still access the Emailed Photos album:

Duane,

One at a time is how I remember deleting photos back then when I did.?

I like the method of deleting them through each message. Thank you for that!

Appreciatively,

Maria

For what it's worth I try to go into the Emailed Photos album once a month and delete the duplicates. I make sure they are sequenced from most recent to oldestpost so I can easily determine the duplicates; anything forward (mire recent) of the original photo gets killed. Only lost 2-3 originals by accident over the course of at least 5 years now. It’s a pain but….
Fromtime to time I remind members to post the photos in their personal albums and provide a link in their message. Some try. Others will never be nable to manage the courtesy. On one group, when I started to debride the emailed photos album, there were over 11K photos in it. (paid group). My goal now is to keep in under 9K with just originals. If I don’t die first, at some time I will get really ambitious and start transferring the oldest originals into the personal albums of the poster. Don’t hold your breath…
Always praying for the day that we can batch delete from emailed photos but for now it’s once at a time.?

I think that information applies to regular photos in regular photo albums.? But what about emailed (attached) photos?? I can't access the Emailed Photos album because that has since been disabled.? They are still there, in a hidden album.? Individual emailed photos can be seen, if you know which messages (out of 150,000) have them.? And all of the normal uploaded (not emailed) photo albums can be seen.? But the Emailed Photos album is hidden from everyone's view.? Bummer.
?
Maybe it made sense at some point, but it seems to me like a bug.

That's incorrect. I just tested and the Photos section is still there for admins, so you can see the Emailed Photos folder, as well as any others you create.

If it is incorrect, then please explain how to do that.

As far as I can see, it is impossible.? (Yes, I am an admin of my group.)

Just to be clear about this, of course the Photos section is still there.? I never suggested it wasn't.? It must be there, in order for anyone to upload their Photos to it.? But the Emailed Photos folder has gone AWOL - er, I mean it is probably somewhere, but hidden from everyone including admins.? It is consuming space on the server and it counts against my group's total.
?
So if you have a way that works to access that album, please let me know how.

Not on my groups.? If you don't have one, then maybe you never allowed attachments?? In that case, it would never have been created.

As I said, it is consuming space.? I see that at the bottom of the main Photos page.? But I can't get to the Emailed Photos photo album anymore, because it is hidden now.? Bummer.
?
Unless there is a secret way to access it now.

Certain criteria must be met for an attachment to appear in Emailed Photos:
?
-- It has to be an image/photo,
-- Its format must be conducive to browser display (e.g. JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, WEBP),
-- It must be at least 100x100 pixels.? ?
?
If there are zero attachments in the message archive that meet these criteria, the Emailed Photos folder will go away.

Bruce

I don't know if all this has been getting through and understood.
?
The group of which I speak allowed attachments.? Some messages back then had things attached.? Some were photos, some were not.? There was an Emailed Photos album, and it had the attached photos that had been sent in messages.
?
Then attachments were set to disabled.? This affects new messages, not existing ones.
?
The Emailed Photos album suddenly seemed to disappear.? It is still there - at least I believe it is there - and still storing the photos that are still attached to older messages.? But mere humans can no longer access that album.? Visiting those older messages reveals the photos (and other files) that were and still are attached to them.? But you can't anymore go to the Emailed Photos album to see the whole list of photos that exist as attachments of messages.? You can visit the messages one at a time, if you know which messages have them.? But finding them out of 100,000+ messages?? It is not easy to discover which ones they are.
?
Fortunately there is not much need to do that in my group.? They do not take up a huge amount of space and we have plenty left.? I'm just discussing the fact that groups.io makes it difficult or impossible to locate those attached photos, if you ever needed to delete the old ones to get back storage space, or for whatever other reason.
?
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe there never was an "Emailed Photos" album and it was all done by smoke and mirrors to trick us into thinking that there was that album with the photos in it.? But my feeling is that the album existed, and still exists, and still has photos in it, but groups.io makes it impossible for us to see it anymore.

Emailed Photos is not an album. It is just another way to access/view photo attachments.
?
If at some point you choose to disable attachments, it kinda stands to reason that this alternative way to display them would go away, too.
?
I have no strong opinions on the matter, and would not be upset if it continued to show up. But from where I stand such behavior seems no less misleading.?

Bruce

There is no 'disabled' option for attachments so I think you mean 'Strip' instead:
?
?
You should set this to Allow or Moderate as it was before and then set the Photos permissions as I stated in #7443.? That way, Photos will not be available for general members but will be available to you and you will see the Emailed Photos album.?
