Logging in to the Groups.io website for the first time

Brian Vogel

Hello All,

? ? ? ? ?Since I participate exclusively via the web interface I've long ago forgotten how one initially gets access to it. ?There are a number of folks on some groups on which I participate that have never logged in to the website. ?Since there are some controls under "Advanced Preferences" on the subscription page that cannot be set via the email interface (or at least not that I know of) I'm trying to write something up about them. ?However, I know that the first response will be, "But I don't have a password for the website and I have no idea how to get one to allow me to log on," so I'm asking here so I can include that information.

? ? ? ? ? ?I know this has been discussed either here or on beta (or both) in the past, but I'm not having much luck in getting what I need to come up in a search.

Brian

Hi Brian,

Here's from the wiki -?

If you are a member of a group but haven't logged into Groups.io yet:

1) cllick on Log In (top right).

2) click on Email me a link to log in. Don't click on Find a Group or Start a Group if you just want to create a password.

3) go to your email and click on the link. Follow instructions. Be sure to check your spam or junk mail if you don't see the email from Groups.io

4) in the upper right you will see your name and an arrow (upside down triangle)

5) click on the arrow

6) then click profile. ?You are now on the login page where you can set a personal password that is a minimum of 6 characters.?

or use one of the other options - Facebook, Google, etc.

If you want to use those as well, please fill those out.

If you join other groups on IO, the password you make here will be your password for them as well.

Forgot your password?

Click on the link on the homepage, just below the password box.

This forum has open archive and wiki so you can check the wiki without logging in ?-?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home

They have to set up a password the first time they log in. I haven¡¯t done it since I set up the list but it should be clear when they go to the website.

Sharon.

[Mod note: Or, they can use "Email me a link to log in" when needed and never have a password on their account.]

Thanks all!

Brian -
I have a couple groups that tend to run in the right lanes of the information highway. For them I created the procedure outlined here: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/1630?.
?
It's worth noting that Mark has increased the duration of the reply?message from a half hour to a 'Cinderella hour' as I prefer to think of it.

I am a total newbie on groups.io and finding it much more confusing than I expected. ?Where should I look to find a definition of "duration of the reply?message"I? ?My first thought was that it refers for the window of time allowed for reply after receipt of the original message? ?However 1/2 hour would discriminates against members who cannot be on line all the time. ?And by how long is the new duration? ?"Cinderalla hour" is cute phrase, but uninformative. ? ??

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand it to be one hour after the message with the live link?is sent from groups.io. The link won't work after that hour, hence the name.?I had the same concern about time lags in getting the message and potentially retrieving it from a spam folder with a dialup system, which was the reason for the suggestion of the?increase.
?
I don't think a member that?"can't be on line all the time" is really a problem. The total duration for?requesting the message, getting a reply, opening it and?actually?responding to the link in the reply should really take less than 10 minutes for most people.?Most of my members managed to accomplish those steps with no problem?before the time extension, when the message lasted only a half hour.

This only refers to logging in to groups.io for the first time, or logging in to
the website via email. groups.io sends a special message with a link in it.
Click on it and you have acces to the website.

It doesn't apply to just replying to a regular group message via email. You
can reply as late as you want, unless the topic or thread gets closed.
