Creating an alias
Mike Cohen
Some members on our group?[email protected]?are trying to create an alias like?kk4pcr@...?and get the message that it is already registered, yet it is not showing up as an alias.? Other members have successfully created it.? Examples:?kt4ls@...,?kk4usm@...,?KN4OAK@....? Any suggestions on how can we create this type of alias? Thanks, Mike |

Mike,
Any suggestions on how can we create this type of alias? That may depend on what you think "this type of alias" does. In Groups.io those addresses are for posting only - no group messages or notices are sent to them. Any messages posted by them post as if they were posted by the primary (subscription) address. In Yahoo Groups addresses of this kind are referred to as "Alternate Posting Addresses". As Duane said, if the address is already in use (someone used it to join a group, or to log into the site) then it cannot be used as an Alias for another address. Duane & Shal, Thank you both for responding to my request.? Sorry for this long description below, but here's some additional info that might shed some light on our problem. Our goal to to have [email protected] accept un-moderated e-mails from the Winlink e-mail system. NFARES stands for North Fulton Amateur Radio Emergency Services, a team of licensed amateur radio operators in Georgia who use the Winlink e-mail system to send e-mails by radio.? We send some of these e-mails by radio (through a distant station connected to the Internet) to [email protected], which is set up to accept moderated incoming messages from non-members.? Everyone who uses the Winlink system has a unique address that is their amateur radio callsign plus , so mine is ad4mc@....? In order for [email protected] to accept an un-moderated e-mail from callsign@..., that address has to either be added to the member list, which would effectively double the number of members or add the callsign@... address as an alias so that it can be un-moderated.?Three of our members have successfully added thier callsign@... as an alias, but others get the Already Registered message.? Both callsign@... and alias callsign@... members can send un-moderated Winlink e-mails to [email protected]. We don't understand why some aliases are accepted and others are shown as Already Registered. Thanks again, Mike On Wed, Mar 13, 2019 at 1:10 AM Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: Mike, |
Mike,
Same answer as before. The affected people already logged into Groups.io using their Winlink address, or they used the +subscribe email address From their Winlink address to create a membership in your group (or some other group). Either of those actions creates a Groups.io account with that as its primary address (meaning it logs in using that address). Either way, the Groups.io account which logs in using that Winlink address must be deleted before the address is free to be used as an Alias for another account. There cannot be two accounts claiming the same email address. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Shal, When I search [email protected] for "", I only get two members. Any suggestions for how others could be searched and deleted? Mike On Wed, Mar 13, 2019 at 8:59 PM Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote:

Mike,
An account is not a subscription. What you can find in your Members list are subscriptions, but those same email addresses may have subscriptions in any number of other groups. Or no groups. Which is how there may be Winlink addresses which are registered (have accounts) but do not appear in your group's Members list. Only the account owner can delete the account. I see from your screenshot that those two addresses are not listed as NC, meaning that they are confirmed, meaning that the holder of that address can receive messages sent to that address (unless you used Direct Add to put them there, or unless you manually confirmed the address, both of which are Premium features). Being able to receive messages at that address is a good thing: it means that the member can use the Email me a link to log in button to log in for one last time to delete the account, even if he/she never set a password for the account. By the way, I also see that they have the P badge, meaning that their subscription Posting Privilege is set to Override: not moderated. I generally recommend against using that setting for most members. If it is your intent to have most members in your group un-moderated it is better to choose the Default Group policy privilege for most members and uncheck Moderated in the Spam Control section of your group's Settings page. That way you can quench a flame war or other disturbance in the group at need by simply checking the Moderated box, and then unchecking it again after things quiet down. Since you are forced to choose at least one in the Spam Control section, check New Users Moderated instead. Shal, Hard for me to express how much I appreciate your detailed responses.? Simply put...Thank You !! The two names in the screenshot are myself (Owner) and the person who will take over if I get hit by a bus.? The default is to have the first message moderated.? I override that for most members.? Fortunately, we have never had an unwanted posting. Not my first choice, but I will encourage the dozen or so members who use Winlink and cannot add a Winlink alias to add a subscription, like I did. Thanks again. Mike On Thu, Mar 14, 2019 at 1:03 AM Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote:

Mike,
The default is to have the first message moderated. I override thatExceptional diligence. I'd probably just wait for their first message to arrive in Pending, then approve it (assuming it is appropriate). Then the system will automatically switch their Privilege from NuM to "Use Group Moderation Setting". Or after some other number if you set a number other than 1 for "Unmoderate after". Not my first choice, but I will encourage the dozen or so members whoThen they can use the Subscription controls for each to control which receives group messages. Or they could unsubscribe their regular address and use just their Winlink subscription instead, if they like reading and posting messages from there better. But if you or they really would rather not have their Winlink address showing in group messages I still recommend that they log in using that address one last time to delete that account. Then they should be able to establish it as an Alias to their main address.
