Completely edit default messages for invites, direct add, etc

Hi again,
Trying to completely change the default message for new members: invite message, direct add message, welcome message. I see that I can customize and insert when I am sending, but that goes away. There also seems to be something in the admin; settings; member notices. But does this change the default? I think the welcome message for the GMF was different from the usual; how did you do that?

Scroll down and save. (Update notice).

?I have being trying to do the same as the OP, particularly to the Invite message.? The method described in the Wiki page that you linked to does not work, it simply fixes the message in the middle of the default message.

In desperation I believed that by deleting the invite message from the list then going to add new one I would start off with a totally blank form that could complete and lose the default message. I was wrong and to make matters worse to get the Invite message to appear in the message list I had to add something in the optional message box; even a full stop suffices.

I have yet to find a method of stopping the default message appearing; a message that doesn't suit my needs.

The OPs comment about the Invite option below the optional message box, which doesn't appear to perform any function, hasn't been addressed.

As has been discussed here several times, that can't be done.? All you can do is add the customized message.

The Invite message is another member notice that you have to create.

Is there something that can be done about this? ?It seems like the default messages do not meet the needs of many group owners. ?

For me, they are too long and emphasize things that are not important to the way that my members will be using Groups.io. ?

Why are we forced to use these defaults??

The main example given was the Invite email.
I don't see a problem.

Here's what is in the boilerplate:

Hello [Name],
?
You have been invited by Joe Blow to join the Groups.io group [email protected].
?
If you have questions about this invitation, send them to [email protected].
?
To accept the invitation, please reply to this email, or you may accept the invitation on the website.
?
If you are not interested, or if [Invitee Email Address] is not your email address, please ignore this email.
?
Cheers,
The Groups.io Team

That's it! And you can add whatever you wish to the Invite. Even add a hyperlink, colour, different fonts, etc.

What's not to like? And Groups.io even encourages tweaks: ?Optional message to be included with each invite. Customizing your invitation may improve your acceptance rate. It may reassure the invitee that the invitation is legitimate and from you, and may help prevent it from being trapped by the invitee's spam filter.

Surely, some of the boilerplate is?necessary -?who to contact if there is a question,?who is inviting, which group, how to accept.

This would be best posted in the beta group as a suggestion since we,
as a self-help group, can't make that happen. I don't think we know
why it's not more flexible. I agree that I'd like to customize the
messages.

If you're a premium group owner maybe send a note to support.

I don't know about other default messages, but the invite message is only 4 lines telling the recipient that they have been invited to the list, how they can contact someone for more info and how they can accept the invitation. I don't see how it could be made any shorter. I add another paragraph with a little info about what the content of the list is like and welcoming them to our group. There's never been any problems with this as far as I know. I really don't see what the issue is.

Mike,

I have yet to find a method of stopping the default message appearing;
a message that doesn't suit my needs.
As others have said, you can't.

But you can use a horizontal line at the top and bottom of your custom insert so as to clearly separate it from the boilerplate.

No it would not have been better if I had posted it in the beta group. I was not 100% sure it couldn't be done and that was made more uncertain when Frances's reply to the OP did not say it couldn't and appeared to give instructions as to how to defeat the default message.

It is not that the message is too long; it is for my personal reasons that I find it too terse for inviting people I already know. I wanted to make it friendlier but at the same time not clutter it up with irrelevant wording that I dislike. I will not attempt to justify my reasons as that will simply result in a battle of others trying to knock down my personal preferences as has already been started.

In? future I will not be using the Invite message but will create my own from personal email.

Matter closed for me but maybe not for the OP and at least one other.

Most of the boilerplate currently in place has to be present for legal reasons. This is particularly true in the EU.

At a minimum, you must let the recipient know exactly what is happening and give them a chance to opt out.

Okay, I understand that I have to keep the boiler plate words. ?I will add some words of my own when I figure out how to make them a permanent part of my new default messages. ?A question that comes up is: can I choose to put them where ever I want or do the added words always go in a specific place? Thanks for your understanding of a new and not particularly tech-savvy user.

Paul, it is fairly straightforward.

Go to Admin, Settings, and choose the Member Notices button.

Click on New Notice (blue button below the list)

Use the dropdown menu to choose Invite. (The menu is under Notice Type, Welcome).

I just did it again in my test group and I liked Shal's suggestion of putting a horizontal line first. Open the three bar hamburger menu to see all the editing tools.
Click on the horizontal line. (3rd one on the second line)

Type whatever you want to add to the message. Notice you can change the text size, font, colour, etc.

If you are using the style to separate your text, put in another horizontal line.

And then click on Add Notice. This saves it.

When you are ready to invite someone, pick this invitation.

Note, you can have more than one invite notice. And you can change the heading - Invite to main group, perhaps. Or invite mentioning blah blah subgroup.
Whatever works for you.

Frances

paul,

A question that comes up is: can I choose to put them where ever I
want or do the added words always go in a specific place?
They go in a specific place.

Go ahead to the Invite page and play with it a bit.

The first box, Invitation To Be Sent, is a preview. As you type your content into the Customize Message box the top box will update to show you the resulting message.

As Frances mentioned you can save pre-written text using the Member Notices tab. In the Customize Message box, below where you type text, is a drop-list from which you can select a saved Member Notice that will then be copied into the text editing box.

When done experimenting you can just click away from the Invite page without clicking the Send Invitations button - no harm done.
