Closing chats - moderators? #Discussion

Hi everyone,
I just need some clarification on managing chats, please? Am I reading and seeing things correctly that, if the group settings allow moderators to start chats, a moderator can start but not close a chat?
Or am I missing something (entirely possible)?
Thanks much,
Ginny

They should be able to close, edit, or delete them as well. I don't use them, so only going by best guess.

Thanks Duane - that was my thought as well so at least I know I'm not off the rails on that.
But - I'm helping a group transition and we're "in training". I've got one gal doing great learning to be a moderator, but for the love of us she can open but not close a chat. The gray management box that should open in the chat title list just isn't there. We've put her into two different subgroups and it's the same thing. If I make her an owner, then she gets the options box.

I've gone back to both her settings and the group settings to double check everything, and that's when I stumbled (in group settings) that the control says "who can START new chats - doesn't say anything about "managing" them. As strange as it may seem, it would appear that it's on purpose and only an owner can close or delete, given that statement.

Hmm, sounds like that 'permission' might be worth asking for on beta@. Or maybe follow the setting for who can start one? Or maybe it's a bug and is supposed to follow it already.

Thanks for bringing this up. I ran into the same issue yesterday when testing the chat feature in a subgroup where I want to allow any subscriber to start a chat. I realized that, when setting the “chat” field to “Subscribers” under Settings and logging in as a regular subscriber I would see the “New Chat” tab on the Chats page but not the control box (with the edit/close/delete menu) next to a specific chat.? That the initiator of the chat wouldn’t be able to edit it or close it seemed puzzling enough. What I had not realized is that not even the moderators are able to manage the chats. That is even more puzzling. Looks like something that should be brought up.? I am new to Groups.io but would be happy submit the question to [email protected] if that is the right place to go to.

I'll pop it over to beta. Frankly, it's pretty useless as it is. Only an owner can manage a chat in any form.
Thanks everyone, at least I know that it's not me missing the forest for the trees.

I think a question like this should be sent to [email protected] If it's a bug, Mark will let you know and fix it, though it may take awhile based on his recent posts about all the transfers happening. If it's acting as he intended, then you could suggest a change on beta@ for discussion.

AH, got it, Duane, thank you. I did post to beta but I'll send it to Mark.
Thanks!

Hello - Has there been an attempt to get clarification from support on this or should I give it a try??
Thanks

Mark got back to me on this... as you can image he's rather crunched. Here's how it works:
The statement about who can OPEN chats is correct - it is only opening a chat.
In order for a moderator to be able to perform any other management functions on a chat that has been opened, that moderator must also have been given "Edit Archives" permission. If that is granted, then a chat may be closed, reopened or deleted. Otherwise, an owner must manage an open chat.

Mark did also include in his note back to me that "perhaps I should change this"....
I replied that I believed that it would be a good and welcomed change. In many groups chats serve entirely different purposes than email posts. Many groups do not allow editing of archives for reasons ranging from courtesy to legal. Having to allow that editing in order for a moderator to manage a chat is not something that works in many groups.

I think - hope - that Mark sees this (he was very open in our posts) - but some support about it might be helpful (once he's out from under the Yahoo mess, which could be a while...). There is a post in Beta about it...

Thanks for the follow-up.

I will reinforce the message with Mark with the understanding that there are other priorities at the moment.

As far as our group is concerned, I would like for regular subscribers to be able to edit and close a chat that they have opened, should they be given the permission to do so. (I would prefer that deleting be under moderator/owner’s ?control, but since subscribers can delete their posts, the same would presumably apply to chats).

Found the post on Beta.
