moving a message to a different subgroup
John,
Concern is someone will ask 'too general 'a question in a subgroup,You didn't say if you mean while the message is pending, or after it has posted. The former case has been requested in the beta group (the Groups.io official "suggestion box"): That topic is now locked, but you might start a new one to see if you can "bump" the idea. Redirecting the posting while pending, and specifically from a subgroup to the parent group, seems like the easiest case to implement and understand. In this case you know that the posting member is a member of the parent group. Redirecting a pending message to a subgroup, from either the parent or another subgroup, might require that the poster be a member of the destination subgroup. Moving or copying a message after it has posted (if that's what you had in mind) poses some of the same issues as editing a message. One big question is whether the message is sent by email to the destination group members, or whether that should be the moderator's choice when moving/copying the message. Shal |
I didn't say it would be easy.? ?:-) But that is a challenge - the Web UI is so good you can almost forget this is an email list - so even if yu move a message, the next reply to an old message would go back to the same place.? ? Perhaps forwarding to the 'other' list is the best solution, as replies would start ending up in the correct bin. - John Mc On Tue, Jan 9, 2018 at 1:41 AM, Shal Farley <shals2nd@...> wrote: John, |
John Mc,
... so even if yu move a message, the next reply to an old messageRedirecting the message while pending wouldn't pose that risk, but moving it once posted would. That reminds me of the (still existing, I think) problem J reported with deleting a message. If the message was part of a topic that is locked or moderated then replies to the deleted message are not treated as replies to the topic - they are treated as new topics. In other words, they don't have the lock or moderation enforced. Possibly the same solution applies: when moving (or deleting) a message the system should retain enough information to know that the message had been there, and to properly handle any subsequent replies. "Enough" means, I think, at minimum the Subject text and Message-ID fields from the message header. Those are the two facts used by Groups.io to match up replies with existing topics. In the case of a moved message the system would have to retain the additional fact of where the misplaced message moved to. Also, you may have not-a-member problems with both the moved post and the replies if the move isn't from a subgroup to its parent group. Perhaps forwarding to the 'other' list is the best solution, asOn the whole that might be the best solution for messages that have already posted. Post (or have the sender re-post) the message into the correct group, then optionally delete or edit the misplaced post, or follow it up with a note about it having been reposted. Shal |
A member posted to a Topic, but included a second question on a different topic altogether.
Several replies were posted to the new topic that is not a existing topic. Can I copy the "orphan" messages into a Word document, start a new Topic, then post the resultant Word version into the new Topic? I would include the various posters identity, so that it resembles a real post. I could add a bit about the message having been moved. And remove the moved messages from the original Topic. -- Richard |
Richard,
Can I copy the "orphan" messages into a Word document, start a newSure, but why use Word as an intermediary? You could paste the content of the orphan messages directly into the new Topic. I mention this because Word's formatting isn't completely compatible with the HTML used in email, as interpreted by Groups.io. So you can end up with formatting weirdness when pasting from Word.
