Group name taken, but not visible
I am trying to port a group from Yahoo and the name seems to be taken, yet it doesn't show up in a search.? I tried some variations and they didn't work, but maybe not for the same reason.? Are underscores not allowed?? Even so I tried both Hipresurfacingsite and hipresurfacing.?
I'm beginning to think someone with an agenda is intentionally blocking the group being formed here.? Seems there were two Yahoo groups covering the same subject and there has been friction.? It seems crazy, but I'm wondering if there is enough animosity for someone to intentionally block this group using its old name.? I just tried using "Hipresurfacingsite" in the URL where the group name would go and it took me to "/g/surfacehippy" which is the competing group.? Is it possible to register a groups.io name and vector it to a different group?? Is this allowed by the site operators? |
It is easy to put a new name with slight variation from the existing name in Yahoo.
I had to do it for group here. It is that simple.

Unfortunately, there is no way to read people's intentions, malicious or otherwise. I just tried using "Hipresurfacingsite" in the URL where the group name would go and it took me to "/g/surfacehippy" which is the competing group.? Is it possible to register a groups.io name and vector it to a different group?? Is this allowed by the site operators? If you have a Premium group (and KEEP it Premium), you can have group aliases, just like the posting email aliases some people set up. For example, my group "ias-indy" has aliases of "ias" and "indianaastronomicalsociety"...if someone browses to /g/ias?they are redirected to ias-indy. However, these aliases are subject to the same restrictions as a regular group name. If someone has usurped a name that you want, you won't be able to create an alias for your group that has that name, either. So at the end of the day, you're still going to have to come up with a new name for your group if you want it to reside here. Sorry, Bruce |
Ok, so the group name they've used on Yahoo for years is usurped by the other guys.? I don't know what was behind the rift.? I am a member of both groups and tried to get them to use this opportunity to merge, but no-go.? I didn't realize it had gone so far as one group trying to block the other.? That's bad form.?
So if I type in a name and it brings up another group with a different name, does that definitely mean that group has an alias of the name I typed in?? |

If it were an actual group, even if hidden on the directory, you'd be taken to that group. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýAnother possibility that happened over a year ago is that someone created a group expecting to transfer to groups.io but then decided against moving and then deleted the new group.? At the time the name could not be used again.? The workaround was to change the groupname before deleting the group.? Then the original name was?available for reuse.? I had to do that twice, but others did not plan as well. ken clark www.shastasprings.com -- ken clark www.shastasprings.com |

If that was the case, you'd get a message saying "Sorry, but that group does not exist." when you type it into the address bar. Duane -- Help: /static/help GMF's Wiki: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Search button at the top of Messages list A few site FAQs: /static/pricing#frequently-asked-questions |
Group names must follow the same form as a web address, it is the same.? For example?? dog_cat_bird would not be acceptable? however?? dog-cat-bird would be.? For example one of my sites, still waiting to be transferred is???? /g/CushmanGroup .? Look at the nomenclature.?? A similar name such as /g/Cushman_Group? would not work however a similar name of? /g/Cushman-Group? would work.? Underscore is not a permitted character in domain addresses while hyphen is.
Groups.io is the web site address while the user groups under that address's is the member accounts.? Basically we are sub-directories under the root directory for the domain name.? groups.io is how the internet finds their domain name.? The /g/ means the web direct sends the searches to the "g" directory and under that directory is the names of the groups registered here.? The site names of the users front pages. So the location of your forum name is in the same directory as our CushmanGroup name. There are some exceptions and that depends on how important you are.? Underscore can be used in some top level domain names.? EG |
