Browser crash when uploading a file

I have reported this to support and am waiting a reply.

But thought maybe someone here might have some additional insight.

When we upload a binary file to our forum's Files section, Chrome crashes with the "Aw, snap" message and some of the file's header text shown in a thumbnail.

Firefox just locks up completely on the "Upload File" screen when we upload it.

This is a binary file (in the astronomy FITS format).? The site is apparently noticing the file's text header and trying to show a thumbnail.?

We are not using any File storage, so our quota isn't exceeded.? And, the file is just 16 MB, which from what I've read shouldn't be a problem.

Here's a sample file that shows the problem:?.?

Is there a way to turn off File and Photo previews?

Any other suggestions?

Admins should feel free to delete this post if it's too user-specific.

TIA

Tom -- Some files have in the past been reported to cause a "broken-link" type thing to appear in the dialog box, trying to render a thumbnail image. But that was a cosmetic problem; if you subsequently clicked on the "Add" button the upload proceeded anyway.

But for that FITS file, I tried it too, and had to reboot my computer to get a browser window (Chrome) back.

So this is a new one on me, and I suspect only support can help you. Be sure to tag it with a #bug hashtag to catch his eye. Some things can linger in the queue for quite some time after initial triage, but he's usually pretty quick about fixing actual bugs.

In the mean time, you can probably zip the file so it's encapsulated, and upload that.
