Message marked "Objectionable" hides full thread?
We had a member mark a message within a thread as?objectionable and now the entire thread does not show, although if you access the original messages in the thread from the Activity Log, the thread is still there. ? What I¡¯m assuming has happened is the thread was ¡°hidden¡± when it was marked?objectionable. ?(In this case it was not really?objectionable, it was just someone complaining about the wording.) ? So how does a moderator/owner ¡°un-objectionablize¡± a message?? (Un-objectionablize is a technical term in case you are not familiar with it??) ? Peace, Tom Vail |
Tom, how do you mark a message objectionable? I tried and can't see how. Not in an emailed message nor on the group homepage.
Would it be done through their email program / client? Frances -- /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki /static/help More help: use the search button at the top of the Messages list. |

Yes, report this message sends a message to the moderator/owner that:
[member name] wishes to inform you that the following message:
Once that message was received, the full thread was not showing in "Messages." ?Once I deleted the reported message, the thread came back, less the one I deleted. There is nothing in the Activity Log noting the report being sent and no option I can find to reinstate the thread (other than deleting the reported message). ?I can find nothing in the help files on the subject of either reporting messages or?objectionable messages. Peace, Tom |

That sounds like something for beta. The second point (about reinstating the thread with the reported message) sounds like something for support. Chris |

I was sent a message by Groups.io stating that the message had been reported (along with all the other members of that group I have moderator status) but the topic (single post!) did not disappear; the link in the message I was sent went straight to it. FWIW the "reply" I sent was to myself, for the simple reason that I did not notice that the default reply option changes to one whereby the message originator is the recipient, not the group, but a second reply went to the group as normal when I clicked the right tab. I can confirm that nothing of this (pointless!) exchange appeared in the Activity Log. Chris |
Chris,
When you went back to view the test message, did you use the link in the email, which worked?in my case, or click on the messages tab on the site, which?did not show the message in my case.? That was part of the issue, it was there because the link took you there, but there was no way to get to it from the site. I'll?move this conversation over to the beta site. Peace, Tom |

Let me double check things first!...which I have now done, and my findings confirm my earlier comments. I reported my own message but neither the message itself nor the entire thread vanished as a result. My comment about "Reply to Sender" was a red herring; that is the current default set by Shal for a different test a few days ago. Referring the absence of anything in the Activity Log (confirmed!) is a good candidate for beta; can I suggest that you enlist the help of another of your group's members to try to replicate the test I did, just to be sure... there is no point in referring something that cannot be repeated. I repeated this exercise with a different (subscriber-only) account on the other message and they both still show up. There may be something funky going on, but I was unable to replicate it. FYI,? I also notice that Report This Message does not generate any sort of notification to its originator, and I find myself wondering if it should. Does anyone else have a view about this? Chris |

(I took the precaution of advising Support in the message that there was no infringement of the ToS and that the report was purely for test purposes.) This generated no report to the Owner / Moderators and the entire topic, including the "offending message" remained visible. So it seems unlikely that a ToS report was at the bottom of the original query. The mystery deepens... or perhaps not. Chris |
In the hope that what has been discovered as a result of this thread might be of longer - term value I have put together a wiki page for Complaints About Messages. I am not entirely certain that where I have located it in the Index is optimal; it is currently under Advice to Group Members > Topics and Messages but clearly there are other places where it might be better placed.
In broad terms it is more or less finished (I think!) although there are one or two additional snippets that I might add in the next few days. It is, of course, open to editing by other members of this Group if it is felt that changes / improvements are necessary. Chris |
