Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?
I got the longed-for message from Mark and my group is about to relocate on Groups.io, at last.
I was going to create two subgroups, one for moderators and the other for expanded discussion (meetings organization, off-topics, etc.), but I wonder if I'd better wait until the main group (4000+ members) has successfully relocated. Would the 2 subgroups mess up in some way the transfer? Marina |
Marina,
I was going to create two subgroups, one for moderators and the otherI would say create them before sending the Go email, or wait until you receive the "completed" notice. Either way should be fine, but I wouldn't risk creating them while the transfer is in progress. Shal |
Marina,
By the way, I've found out that you cannot invite people to aTrue, because they must first be members of the primary group. You invite them there. You can either add them (which is a Premium Group feature, if I am notNot for subgroups. Even in Basic groups subgroups have a Direct Add page. There you see a list of the primary group members with a checkbox to add them to the subgroup. What you can't do (not even in a Premium group) is Direct Add someone into a subgroup who isn't already in the primary group. or they must joing the group on their own (through the subscribeOr, in the Admin section of the primary group there is a Subgroups page which also shows a list of the primary group members, with checkboxes for each subgroup. There you can conveniently see which subgroups any given person is in, and change them at will. Shal |
My advice would be to create at least one sub-group before the migration (if not too late for you) - so your 'primary' group is already established logically as a sub-group of your group (which it will become when the first sub-group is created), and avoid potential confusion for your members if this change happens after the migration.

I would create at least one subgroup when you create the list because creating the subgroup changes the address of the main group:
Initial group name: [name]@groups.io Subgroup created: facilities@[name].groups.io After subgroup created the main list becomes: main@[name].groups.io Messages to [email protected] are still delivered but when the directions use one name and that name is changed to something else, people get confused. Logically, two names means they are two different things. It¡¯s also hard to go back and correct all the references in the instructions to the new name. That happened to me yesterday when I had shortened the name of a brand new list and didn¡¯t realize that the intro message still had the old name. When the first member tried to visit the group¡¯s website using the links, the site said the group didn¡¯t exist. Most important is that after the subgroup is created, you can change ¡°main¡± to another name which makes more sense to your group. For members who never use the subgroups, or even don¡¯t know they exist, ¡°main¡± means nothing. It¡¯s also confusing to have an address changed midstream to main@[name].groups.io when that has not been the naming convention at Yahoo, etc., where they have 20 years of experience. Do it before you write any directions and make any announcements. Sharon ---- Sharon Villines, Washington DC "Save Our Planet. It's the only one with chocolate." |

Thank you for this important information, Sharon! I didn't know about the group name change. I created the 2 subgroups, but had to update Welcome notice, Guidelines and Wiki of main group to reflect the change in the address :-( I also changed 'main' to the old Yahoo group name. It's been around for 19 years, I don't want to confuse my members. Marina |
