How do I report SPAM?

My groups have been getting a lot of nonmember spam not related to the group.Every group does. Since it comes from non-members, it generally doesn't get forwarded. How do I report this? The messages are rejected, but I would like to report this SPAM. If you're seeing a pattern, I suppose you could report that . I'm curious as to what you expect to be done about it.

I tend to agree. Spammers are a dime a dozen. As soon as one is shut down, three more take its place. Also, the Email addresses they're using are either entirely bogus or belong to real people/companies that have no idea their addresses are being used this way. Blocking spam based on origin Email address is a losing game before you ever get started, as they can be harvested or generated by the billions. The simplest remedy is to stop accepting non member posts, I see none at all in my various groups

The instructions to join and post are very simple, so why accept non member posts at all? As to reporting spam, IMHO its a complete waste of time Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 28/11/2024 15:45, Barry Porter KB1PA via groups.io wrote:

A useful suggestion but after setting one's group to not accept non-member posts how then do potential new members contact one's group to request joining? Just curious . . . . Paul M. CostaRicaLiving == |

They would not be able to simply email the whole group.

As Frances has said, joining and enquiry links are all on the home page which anyone wanting to join would start from

Granted I do not allow non member posts but I have never had an enquiry except using the join this group button on the home page And can't recall getting a request or enquiry to join via the owners address which is also clearly on the home page Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/11/2024 18:04, Epicatt2 via groups.io wrote:

I do allow non-member messages to my groups, but these messages are moderated, so I can let them through (likely with an updated subject line) if they are useful.
?
However the non-member doesn't get to read any replies to their post, unless someone (me?!) contacts them by regular email about it. ?Useful on occasion though, especially for committee Groups where our housing management might want to contact the committee. Then I summarize any replies and send it off to the Management.
?
The subject line for this thread is How do I report SPAM. I do see occasional spam. First, to the group-owner email address and I just delete it. Then, from non-members trying to post to the group, but since it is moderated, I delete it. And then there are spam-like messages from group members who wander off topic - way off topic!
?
My own groups are mostly restricted and unmoderated. A big travel group is not restricted but moderated.
There is a setting in Message Policies relating to this is:
Allow Nonmembers to Post
(Messages from nonmembers will be moderated instead of rejected.) ?

Your experience is happier than mine. I get requests to join from people who are already members.

Erika, they must be trying to join with another email address. Do you think that they are trying to change their email address? Or is it forgetfulness?

If you try to Join with an email address that is already registered with the group, you get an error message:
Email Address?
That email address is already registered. To use it, Log In. ?

I believe groups.io does stop some spam, but there is no way to report it. The address probably is spoofed. I think we have two options: either use a personal spamfilter, or have one at the email-provider-level. The latter will be better because it increases the chances that a certain "message" is reported by several others before it gets sent to you. My email-provider uses a filter called "spamassassin", and my estimate is that it catches 90 % of spam, and 5% of what it catches is ham (=not spam). groetjes/?is, Ronaldo |

Frances,

Yes, I think it's forgetfulness. No, they're not trying to join using the usual channels. They're sending a "Please add me to the group" message to the group posting address.
?
People who use different email addresses for different groups and can't remember which is which are another headache.

If a groups message archive is open anyone can read the posts, but to be able to post or reply requires a person to join the group to my mind A non member post is moderated and if passed does it then go to the group? the non member is not informed of this and if anyone replies to it the non member isn't informed, so I can't really see the point of that, surely the aim is to get that person to subscribe to join in with the conversation? Of course different subjects may require different rules but for mine which are for genealogy I would want them to subscribe before any further interaction Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) I believe this experience varies... |

This is a self-help group with members assisting other members on various subjects. We can't reject an address. You can take action yourself by not allowing non-members to post, as Nivard has suggested. You can still get SPAM sent to the group-owners' address, but I don't see much of that myself. You can just ignore those.
