Pending Subscription notice not being sent out for a subgruop with restricted membership

I've been running our list on Groups.io for 4 years. We have a main list with restricted membership and a few subgroups that are open to anyone in the main list.?

I've setup a new subgroup with restricted membership and it's own Pending Subscription notice. The group is open to those in the main group who meet additional criteria. The custom Pending Subscription notice is not being sent out when a member of the main group sends an email to join this subgroup. A default Pending Subscription notice is sent out instead:

Thank you for your interest in Groups.io and the group [removed]@[removed].groups.io. To complete your subscription, please reply to this email. If you did not request - or do not want - a subscription to this group, please accept our apologies and ignore this message.??

Additionally, the pending subscriptions are not listed under Members with the Pending Approval filter.?

I've double checked all of the settings in the subgroup. Restricted Membership is checked and the Pending Subscription notice is active. I haven't had any problems with these settings and the Pending Subscription notice in the main group.

If anyone has any ideas of something that I've overlooked, please let me know. I can't launch this subgroup without the restriction and pending subscription notice in place. Thanks in advance!

That notice is sent to confirm that they actually applied to the subgroup.? Once they reply to that, the Pending Subscription notice you set up is sent, they are placed in the Pending Approval queue, and you get a notification if you've set that up.? Seems a bit convoluted to me, but it does work.

Thank you, Duane, for that good information. I've been running our restricted membership list for 4 years and was completely unaware of that initial "Thank you for your interest in Groups.io and the group..." email. This does explain why some new members have told me that they'd already responded to an email about joining the list, even though I hadn't seen any response from them.

IMHO it is not a good process to force a new member to respond twice to join a restricted membership list.?

On a main group that's restricted, the email address confirmation (needed by Groups.io) and Pending Subscription notice are sent at the same time.? If none of your other subgroups are restricted, you wouldn't have seen this before.

I think I need to clarify this a bit.? If someone has no Groups.io account, thus not a member of any groups, they'll be sent the email address confirmation notice.? If they're already on other groups, thus having an account, it's not sent.? I believe that it being sent when someone applies to a restricted subgroup is a bug and I'll report it on the beta group shortly.

If those applying for membership in your group are already members of other groups and/or subgroups, they won't receive the address confirmation.? In fact, you can create an account without joining any groups and can reply to the confirmation email then.? (Except for this situation with subgroups, which should be fixed soon.)

Hi Duane,

Thanks for your clarification. I tested joining our new restricted subgroup using two email addresses that have long had accounts in our main group. I own both of those email addresses I used to test. This was the process I experienced twice:
  • Sent email (previously registered on our main group) to the subscribe address of the new restricted subgroup.
  • Received generic groups.io email address confirmation.
  • Responded to that confirmation email.
  • After responding to the confirmation email, the test address then received the Pending Subscription email for the new restricted subgroup.
  • At the same time, then test address appeared on the Member list as Pending Approval.
It does seem like a bug to me that someone who already has an account with our main group should have to respond twice to join a restricted subgroup.

Jesse
