Detailed Instructions on How to Conduct a Yahoo Transfer

Edited

Folks -- Appended below please find detailed instructions on how to conduct a transfer using the Easy Group Transfer method.

See also the new FAQ at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/FAQ-on-Moving-from-Yahoo-Groups
To check status of an ongoing transfer:??/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948

I will be re-posting this periodically for the benefit of all the new people that continue to flood in. My apologies for the inevitable dupes in your email inbox.

Regards,
Bruce

Here is the process. It is not fully automated and will take several days. Do not do anything out of order.

The following instructions are for a full-width desktop/laptop display. This can all be done on mobile too, but it's a lot easier if you don't.

0.1 Go here:?/
0.2 At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link that says "Easy Group Transfer." Click it.
0.3 Scroll to the bottom of the subsequent page and click on the big blue button labelled "Yahoo Group Instructions."
0.4 You should be at?/yahootransfer. Read the instructions carefully, including all the Notes. Bookmark this page, too. You will come back here several times.

1.1 Create your groups.io group and configure it according to your needs. Help with group settings can be found here:??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation?(Note: Each new group must be reviewed to confirm that it meets the Groups.io Terms of Service. This alone could take up to a day.)
1.2 To use the Easy Group Transfer, you must upgrade the group to the Premium Yearly plan.?You can downgrade to the Basic plan later (i.e.: a year from now), if you want.
To do so, select Admin>Upgrade from the left-side menu bar and click on the blue "View/Change Plan" button. Select "Premium Yearly" (one-time cost of $220) and make your payment.?
(You have now completed Step 1 of the instructions)

2.1 Return to the bookmarked page (/yahootransfer). Click on the big green button at the bottom that says "Set Up New Transfer."
2.2 Enter the name of your Yahoo group and the name of your groups.io group in their respective boxes. The groups.io group is conveniently selected from a pick-list of those groups that you own. Do NOT enter any domain information (i.e.:?leave off[email protected] or @yahoogroups.co.uk), just the group name.
2.3 Click the big green "Start Group Transfer Process" button at the bottom of the page.?
(You have now completed Step 2 of the instructions)

3.1 Go to your YAHOO GROUP (not your groups.io group) and log in. Send a membership invitation to "[email protected]". If you've never done this before, instructions can be found at??
3.2 Return to the bookmarked page?(/yahootransfer) once again. Select the group you are transferring from the Existing Transfers at bottom right (click on its link). A new page will come up, with?a status box at the top. If all is well, it should say: "We've received the invite to your group and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite." If it doesn't say that, the invitation did not go through. Go back to Step 3.1 above and try again.??
(You have now completed Step 3 of the instructions)

4.1 BE PATIENT. Accepting the invitation is often?the longest step in the process, and requires human intervention (solving a CAPTCHA).?
4.2 BE EVEN MORE PATIENT.?Do not send additional invitations in an attempt to hurry things up.
4.3 You will eventually receive an email from groups.io stating that the Yahoo group invitation has been accepted, and providing you with further instructions. Continue waiting until you receive this email.
(You have now completed Step 4 of the instructions)

5.1 Return to your YAHOO GROUP and log in. Find the "[email protected]" member record (sorting by join date is the easiest way) and promote it to a Moderator. Instructions for this can be found at?.
5.2 Return to the groups.io page that you bookmarked in #0.4 above one more time. Once again, go to the "Existing Transfers" at bottom right and select the group you're ready to transfer. On the resulting page, click the green "Give Go Ahead to Transfer" button.?
(You have now completed Step 5 of the instructions)

6.1 BE PATIENT AGAIN. The ability to actually do the transfer depends on how well Yahoo's servers are operating. We all know what that means, right? (If you want to check status, see?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948).
6.2 You may notice some activity in your new groups.io group, which probably reflects partial completion of the process. Do not panic. This is what you wanted to happen!
6.3 When the transfer is done, you will receive an email from groups.io summarizing what it was able to transfer. It will also list whatever things it was?NOT?able to transfer. Until this email is received, you aren't done yet.
6.4 Rejoice.

Most of us have "been there" with this process before and it all sounds easy in hindsight. Ironically, the same thing that's causing most people to abandon Y!G (server downtime) is exactly the same thing most likely to get in the way of completing the transfer process.?The best time to initiate a transfer is when Yahoo is performing well.?If you procrastinate until things are crashing and burning, delays, incomplete transfers, and other such frustrations can be expected.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Help with transfer of an "orphaned" Yahoo group #pgoffline

Adam Farson

I am trying to transfer the following Yahoo group to groups.io:

?

This is an amateur radio technical group. The problem I am encountering is as follows: Although I am a moderator on this group, the owner pa3duv@...) did not give me the privilege of elevating members to moderator status. I have created the member [email protected], but cannot elevate it to moderator and am thus unable to start the transfer process.

?

Repeated e-mails to the group owner have gone unanswered. Not even the impending ¡°doomsday¡± of Yahoo Groups has caused him to respond to my request for this privilege. Thus, I am stuck. Is there any way of getting around this obstacle?

?

I will be most grateful for any help or suggestions you can offer.

?

Best regards,

Adam

Managing multiple groups

I want to help a number of local music groups get mailing lists off bcc to groups.io

i could have each group sign up with a separate accound but ideally I'd like to have them all under one umbrella account that I manage, even though they will have separate members and admins

a possible benefit I'd like from this is that there will be members who are involved in more than one group; eg member of the "Irish jam" group, and also of "old time fiddlers" or they join one group then later get involved in another. ?

From the sub-group perspective each should feel like an autonomous group

What do you think about having different organisations under an umbrella account like this? Any downsides?

Thanks

Susan P, no, I think Frances was answering my question. But our situations are similar. Mine differs in that my address for Yahoo group did not match ?address. I since have changed the Yahoo address to match.

Susan, you have your group, and you changed it to Premium. And you went to YahooGroups and invited the transfer email address.

Also keep in mind that transfer is going to take time. It may be a week or more. Someone who has inside track will be able to tell us about the backlog and continued rush of new conversions.

Thanks for the links. I¡¯ll read them.

I thought I discovered why the status box was empty. The email I used for ?was different from the one I use for the Yahoo group. Re: A few questions about the yahoo change

Hi Shal,
I just wrote a message to Frances about having a hard time issuing an invite to the transfer agent. Could you advise? My subscription email address to our yahoo group was different from the one I used to join . I just changed it on Yahoo to match the one on ?and reissued the invitation but the status box still says no invitation ?is being processed or completed. I¡¯m stuck and frustrated. I don¡¯t know what to do.

Invite Approvals

Why do my invites require approval before they are sent out.?

Re: A few questions about the yahoo change

Sally,

A few questions about the yahoo change
These may be covered in the Yahoo GroupManagersForum:

and would be more appropriate there.

That said (since you aren't a member of Y!GMF or YGOG):

1) Will digests stop after October 28? Or after December 13?
Good question. Pessimistically the 28th.

I think it depends on whetherthey stop storing even conversations at that point. If so then they'll have no copies of the messages from which to form digests.

2) If someone is still on digest after they stop, will they just get
no emails?
Another good question. I'm advising people switch their memberships to Individual Emails as soon as practical just in case.

3) Is there any easy way to switch 800+ accounts???
Tedious, but not difficult:

4) Will online editing of posts continue after Oct 28/Dec 13? (which?)
And if not, it seems like there would be no way to edit posts?
I presume you mean editing of Pending messages.

Again, good question. Yahoo says "admins will continue to have limited access to group settings and administration tools" - but which tools they haven't said. I'm optimistically hoping it includes all of the functions of the Pending Members list.

5) Looks like the member list will still be on the site, and editable
- correct?
Again, good question. I have to assume it will because it is the most fundamental administrative tool.

6) "No attachments" - will attachments to emails be allowed through
the system as a post?
I assume that means no storage for attachments, but that emails will go through with their attachments intact. Just as a precaution I'm setting my groups to:
HTML - Include Attachments in Email

Re: switch from yahoo groups to groups.io

Hi

if you get your group transferred by the Groups.io transfer process from YahooGroups, your members just have to start using the new email address to send posts to your new home.
They will get email as usual, with the same settings.?

You can refer them to this - or copy the bits that you want to share with them:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home

For new members, check the section on Member Notices-?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation

You will probably have more questions but please look at the info we volunteers put together for you!
Then ask!

Re: switch from yahoo groups to groups.io

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Frances, will our group members get ?email messages from ?inviting them to sign up for our group on ? If they will, we need to hurry up and post our own message to our members.

I have not had a chance to find out what we should tell our members about what they have to do (if anything) to join our group on , how to get to the message board and how to post to the group via email. Can you tell me or point me to explanations for these questions? ?

Our group is always on moderation for all members except owners and mods. It can be seen in the directory but approval is required to become a member. To find out if they are eligible a short message goes out when they click the join button. It says ¡°tell us why you want to join.¡± Then they send back a sentence or two of explanation.

Re: A few questions about the yahoo change

Edited

Looks like the questions should be addressed to someone who knows the plans of Yahoo.
One quick solution to keep the continuity of the group's activities, would be to setup a GIO premium account and transfer member email addresses manually. This can be done very quickly. Once the membership email addresses are moved, members can continue to post messages and respond to them. This is what I have done for yahoo group.

Re: switch from yahoo groups to groups.io

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Yes, that is correct - exactly what I did. We¡¯re working on our welcome message. For now, I de-activated it until we can decide exactly what to say. We plan to post our own message to our Yahoo group informing members of the coming change, so they won¡¯t be surprised.

Bruce, never mind - I think I found what you were talking about. You have to click the button at the bottom of the page you linked to. The button says Yahoo Group Instructions and when the new page shows up, look down in the right hand corner here.?/yahootransfer??When I look there I see a blank box with the words ¡°You have no transfers in process or completed."

I did issue an invitation from our group to the transfer agent a little while ago.?

Please advise.? I would like to transfer everyone over.?
Jessica -- Are you sure your invitation was accepted? Or just sent? Waiting for the invitation to be accepted is the longest step of the process.

You can check status as follows:

Return to the Yahoo groups transfer page (/static/transfer) and select the transfer you've initiated from the pull-down menu at bottom right. There should be a status banner at the top of the resulting page. Based on what you've told us, it should say something to the effect of "we have received your invitation and will accept it soon, there is no need to send another invite."

If you see that, you're fine. If it says something else, come back here and tell us what it says.

I know you're anxious to get this done, but be patient. There are probably 100 groups ahead of you in the queue...with 100 owners, all feeling the same way you do. You will receive the anticipated email soon.?

Regards,
Bruce
