Re: How do I contact a member of my group?

Thank you everybody. Sorry for asking a dumb question.
I didn't notice the small Private button at the bottom of the message.
One more information to put in my Wiki instructions for members.

In my group I have 474 members in red bouncing status. All have Yahoo accounts. I am not sure which is the best way to deal with this.
I am thinking of sending a notice/alert in the group (in case bouncing members at least read posts online) and then simply delete all bouncing accounts.
Any better suggestions?

Re: Yahoo transfer/Invitations/Subscribe by email conflicts? #howtoguide #membership

Dougsinc,

I've sent the invitation to [email protected] but haven't received
the confirmation, yet.
It may take a while for you to reach the head of the queue, but when the transfer agent is ready to be promoted you should receive (at your Groups.io log-in address) a notification with the instructions to proceed.

would it cause a problem if I also sent invitations to my members? And
also told them they could subscribe by email?
One disadvantage, that J mentioned, is that then you may have conversations in two places, and those that haven't yet joined the new group may feel left out.

Another disadvantage is that any address already in the Groups.io group will be skipped when the transfer agent is copying the Y!Group's Manage Members list. Which means that their Email Delivery, Posting Privileges, and Join Date will not be copied. The first two you could copy by hand, but some might be nostalgic for their original join date.

Re: A few questions about transferring a group

Jill,

The group owner cannot access the group and hasn't been able to for a
long time. ... Can we move to Groups IO in this situation i.e. the two
moderators are active the but the group owner is locked out?
It depends on what privileges the moderators have. The first step is that the transfer agent has to become a member of the group. If the group's membership is restricted then you need a moderator with the ability to "Invite and add members" or "Approve pending members".

What may be more troublesome is whether anyone can promote the transfer agent to moderator. A moderator can do that if he/she has the privilege to "Add, remove, and change moderator privileges"

To see if you have the privilege, go to the Manage Members page, Moderators tab, and click on the other moderator's row, anywhere except at the checkbox. If that opens up an Edit Member dialog showing the Moderator Privileges then you have the privilege to change them. And also to change the Role field between Member and Moderator. If nothing happens, you do not.

If the transfer agent cannot be promoted to moderator then it cannot retrieve the members' email addresses from the Manage Members list. I don't know if the copy operation is possible in that case.

p.s. Either moderator can invite the transfer agent to the group and start the transfer process. It doesn't need to be the owner. Once you get over to , you can set up whoever you want to be moderators and owners.

Sure. The new group can have any name. ?And as long as you can contact the person, you can invite them to the new group or they can just join it. If they¡¯re still a member of the yahoo group, they¡¯ll be transferred anyway, even if they can¡¯t currently access the yahoo group.?

I transferred a Yahoo UK group just by putting the Yahoo name in the field request and ignored the party after the "@" symbol.? Worked perfectly.

It wouldn't cause any problem in terms of the transfer agent. They will simply be noted as already belonging to the group, and won't be touched. But I think it's preferable to have everybody transferred en masse, simply because the ones who transfer early will start posting in the new group. and the rest won't see the posts until later if they are the type who use email to read group messages. It just seems messy.

Underscores are OK in Yahoo group names.

Spaces and slashes would not be OK.

I'm going to report this to Mark at support immediately, but thought I'd let this group know: I have log entries that many yahoo-email members are bouncing, INCLUDING a couple who are no longer in the group due to having been banned or left. Something is very messed up and this is alarming.?

Re: bouncing

Dave,

Also on the topic of bouncing, we transferred 1100 members. At first
we had about 65 bouncing addresses on groups.io.
Those were likely addresses that had been bad for some time, but which Y!Group's mechanism failed to change to Bouncing status.

In the 3 weeks since we transferred, the list is up to 110.
The later bouncers are likely Yahoo Mail users being affected by the current rash of apparent glitches in Yahoo Mail (wrongly rejecting messages because it temporarily thinks "This user doesn't have a yahoo.com account").

David I do believe it is a verizon issue. Before verizon took over I never had these problems.
?
Paul thanks. I do have a gmail email but have had yahoo for years and have so many saved emails there that are important to me. I can change the groups to my gmail here.
?
Slowly try and move my letters to gmail. Then I will either close yahoo or just not use it.
?
Thanks

Re: google drive integration

Victoria,

Shal, that done, how can members use this and upload attachments/fotos
there?
I hope someone else has an answer for you. I've not tried to integrate Google Drive into any groups. I've only used it a few times.

My initial reaction is that the files stored there would have to be made public, else the members would have no access (because Google wouldn't know who's in your group).

Also on the topic of bouncing, we transferred 1100 members. At first we had about 65 bouncing addresses on groups.io. In the 3 weeks since we transferred, the list is up to 110. Without counting, I would say about 90% of those are Yahoo addresses. I just looked at the membership list on the old Yahoo list and it shows 0 bouncing members. Doesn't make sense to me.?

The hard-bounce members have the following message: "554 delivery error: dd This user doesn't have a yahoo.com account (xxxx@...) [0] - mta4252.mail.bf1.yahoo.com"

The soft-bounce members have the following message: "54 delivery error: dd Requested mail action aborted - mta4244.mail.bf1.yahoo.com"

I was able to contact one (former) member who is on Facebook and he confirmed that he changed his email AND no longer wanted to be part of the group. That one was easy. Now we have 109 bouncing members.

Can anyone help me understand this one?

Dave

Re: bouncing

Hi Anita,
I don't think it is a Verizon issue as much as Verizon getting a bag of you know what, when they bought Yahoo. We know that Groups were major messed up & that mail had problems. They also got a poor count on the number of mail users because of all the unused Yahoo email addresses created for Groups that are never use. Of course it was up to Verizon to do Due Diligence on the purchase.

I recommend that if you haven't already added a non-Yahoo ID as an owner of your Group(s) that you do so immediately. I have a gmail ID that I've made an owner along with several Co-Owners of my groups.

When I get the time, I'll dump my Yahoo email that I've used for over 15 years.

You can put them in your group's Description text by using the Insert/edit link tool in the formatting toolbar for the Description edit box.

Re: Stuck in NC status #membership

Bruce,

Still a little confused, though. We are not a Premium group so the
Direct Add feature is not available to us. How did they get to this
point?
What I did was (in a logged out browser) click the "Join this group" button on GMF's home page, and supply an alternate email address. The hard part was finding an address of mine that is real, and yet not already registered at Groups.io... ;-)

If your group is Restricted membership then some mod/owner would have had to approve the membership. If your group _were_ a premium group that would also have confirmed the address. But with a basic group the address remains NC.

Also, if your group were a premium group the Direct Add would confirm the address. Good thing that, otherwise Direct Add wouldn't be much use.

Re: Stuck in NC status #membership

Thanks as always, Shal! I guess it's reassuring that they aren't "really" members yet.

Still a little confused, though. We are not a Premium group so the Direct Add feature is not available to us. How did they get to this point? Perhaps someone else knows...

...or perhaps their confirmation emails landed in spam.

I have someone else who does all the invitations and such, so I don't know what he might have done.?I can send confirmation emails with an explanation, but would like to take measures to avoid this in the future. Disconcerting, this is.

Thanks again,
Bruce
