Re: Requiring name on sign up
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Bruce,Is it possible for a person to have a user profile in groups.io that contains a display name, but clear the name (or change it to something different) just for a specific group to be anonymous in that group? Normally the same email address and display name are used in all groups where a person is a member.? Actually I would use 2 different email addresses (= user ids) if I was such a person, many email services offer the free use of an alias name so it would be easy to set up, and then use 2 different email addresses in groups.io which would look like 2 different persons for the system and for all other members.? Re: Requiring name on sign up
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Karen,You can activate ?restricted membership¡° for your group (admin - preferences - settings) - then any membership request will be moderated, and you can ask for a name if necessary before approving a membership request. But there¡®s no automatic way to achieve that I believe. Thomas Am 08.04.2025 um 15:43 schrieb Karen Yun-Lutz via groups.io <renaissancewomn04@...>:

Is there a way to require new people signing up to include their name??Not at this time. It would be handy. I run an open group and some people only include their email address. No first or last name.? Display Name will usually be populated as soon as a subscriber sends an email to the group. If they never do - or never edit their subscription record to add one - it will remain empty.

There is an ongoing discussion in the beta group about adding fields for this during signup (). If you want such a feature to be added, you might want to weigh in there.
?
In doing so, please consider that there exist many groups where anonymity is actually desirable.

Re: What is a "locked" subgroup?
Hi Otto,
free groups can't have subgroups at all, except if they are legacy groups that had subgroups before 15. January 2020. So if your main group is younger than that, you lose visibility of the subgroups if you downgrade to free ( the contents of the subgroups will be kept in case you change to a paid plan again later).

There is no way to set up a one-click link to join a group. At a minimum, the prospective subscriber must provide an email address.

What is a "locked" subgroup?
What does "locked" mean???
Does it mean that new members can no longer be invited?
?
Due to budget constraints I need to downgrade to free.
It says my subgroups will be locked.? Can I invite new members?? Can I delete existing members?
?
I have been searching through the manual ... cannot find the answer.
Thank you for any help.

Linda, if you are logged in as a group member (or perhaps just have an automatic login cookie set) and want to test the join facility, you must do it from an incognito (anonymous) browser window. Part of my #suggestion to the beta group was that if the person accessing the join link is currently logged in as a group member, a dialog should come up saying "You are already a group member" with an OK to dismiss. -P. You might want to reduce the background colour of your homepage image, and ?put some of your homepage info in a Welcome notice. I like to use the editing tools including the tools behind ..... (ellipsis).

I am not sure how you tested it - you might get a better idea of what it looks like by using "private window" or "incognito" mode.
