Hi Lori, welcome to this wonderful platform. When you replied to a message, it's got a place to include quoted messages. Or if you're using your email program, you should be able to always see the original message as long as you have your email program set up to include the original message. And as far as the summaries concern, once it has 12 messages it will dispense a summary. If you don't get 12 messages, then it will dispense the next morning the summary. And it will contain a link to each message. From what I've heard. I hope this is answered your questions, and if I can be further of assistance, or if you need more help, please reach out.

We¡¯re testing groups.io to see if we want to commit.? I have a few questions about the Email Delivery options.?

Individual messages: is there a way to include the original message with the replies to it?

Full Featured Digest or Plain Digest: It says ¡®up to 12 messages grouped together¡¯ but it doesn¡¯t give any clue how often it would be sent.? Does it wait for several message but what happens if there aren¡¯t very many?? Daily?? Weekly?

Having reached this point, you should be able to find "Split" in the More menu, except for the oldest message. As explained previously you cannot split there because it would create a topic with zero messages.

I think I know what you're getting at.

Online web forums often provide a "tree structure" for a topic, displaying all the messages and their interrelationships (who replied to what), with the message that started it all at its "root." Groups.io does not operate that way... and cannot, since many of the posts come in as emails, and there's no way to definitively determine what an email might be replying to. All it can do is assume that the oldest message in the topic (i.e.: the message with the lowest message number) corresponds to when everything started, and that all the responses are related to that.

Generally, that strikes me as a logical assumption.?

On that basis I have to go back to what Duane said... there is no provision to alter history and insert a later message into this position (and in fact, there is no such position). The best you can do is remove earlier messages, such that they no longer appear in the topic.

Summary: We like to keep the ¡®anchor¡¯ message for the entire Topic ¨C even if it gets contaminated ¨C the same, and identical format.

You can create a link that opens a topic and "points to" one of the messages. Open the message in question, scroll down, and click the "View all xx messages" link. You can then copy that URL from the browser's address bar and paste it wherever you need to.

For example, I'd consider this URL to be the "root" of the current discussion:? /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/110967242#msg48735?

Thanks to all! First, My bad for making the ¡°message¡± versus ¡°Topic¡± part so confusing. I erred by intermingling them. There only happen to be two Topics in this transaction;

17 messages in one, six in the other.

(yeah, right) we create a Folder in the Files for ¡®all things¡¯ (messages, pictures, tributes, obits, etc.) relative to that member, and then copy/paste the link to the ¡®anchor/parent¡¯ Topic/message into that File/Folder.

That way, if someone is looking up a friend, they don¡¯t have to look around/search for anything ¨C it¡¯s all linked together. But we all know how things get truncated and outside the lines after that.

And, as we find the ¡®stragglers and outliers¡¯, we Merge them into the Topic that has been directly linked.

Summary: We like to keep the ¡®anchor¡¯ message for the entire Topic ¨C even if it gets contaminated ¨C the same, and identical format.

This generates a new question, which may be related to the Dan¡¯s original question: If you merge 2 topics, which will be the ?anchor point¡° that defines the topic, and which cannot be split? Duane said that this is always the oldest message, but by merging you might merge an older message into the topic - will that one become the new ?anchor point¡° (I hope you know what I mean)? And will the previous one then loose that status, and have a ?split¡° option? And if this really happens, is some sort of refresh necessary before the new status is visible (in app and browser, which may behave differently)?
I would test that, but I don¡®t want to generate test messages in a live group.?
This is a slightly exotic question I believe, but the question made me curious - sorry! :-)

From the viewpoint of where a topic can be split, you won't be allowed to split a topic before its oldest message. Doing so would create a topic with zero messages in it. [For awhile, there was a bug in the system that allowed this, but thankfully it has been fixed.]

Once a topic has been created, it is a collection of messages that share the same topic properties (subject line, reply-to setting, etc). This concept of an "anchor point" has no real meaning.?

I'm struggling to understand what "status" you might be referring to.

Fair warning, though... the messages you just got done splitting-and-merging have already gone out as emails. Because of this, emailed replies often get misdirected into the wrong topic, requiring another split-and-mergefest. You can put both topics on moderation to redirect such replies as they come in, but the whole process soon becomes very tedious.
?
This discussion is becoming more and more hypothetical. To get back on track, please let us know what you might be trying to accomplish.

You can only merge two topics at a time. To do more than that, you have to sequentially pair them up and repeat.

Again, the subject line is a property of a topic, not a message.?

If you split a topic, you will be prompted for a new subject line. Failing that, select Topic Properties from the More hamburger menu. Any changes you make will affect all the messages in that topic.

How about this. If splitting is not working, then maybe copying and pasting that one message into a new topic would work, then delete that one message from the other topic it was in.

I'm probably not doing this right, but I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who offered their assistance here to my email problem.? Special thanks to Joseph Hudson, who got on the phone with me and worked through the whole process of actually solving my problem for me because it was beyond my skill level.? He is amazing, offering his time and extreme technical talent to bear on my problem and sticking with it until solved....asking only that I " Pay it forward"....which I fully intend to do as that is my philosophy when I help others as well.? This 86yo Marine is very thankful that Mark created and operates Groups.io, and that this group and so many talented volunteers are here to help us " low teckkies" get along.? I understand the splitting part of the problem I believe. You select one of the messages in a topic, then after selecting ?split¡° give it a new subject, which starts a new topic. But how do you merge multiple messages into one topic? I don¡®t see an option to change the subject of an existing message, did I overlook that?

Good morning,
In the process of creating my new group, I invited an initial set of members, then I submitted my new group.? Later, when I attempted to add new members, I saw this message:??This group has not yet been approved. Once it has been approved, you will be able to post to it.

Does this mean I'm only allowed to invite members when I create the group, but I cannot invite additional members until the group is approved?

Hi Dan,
I had a look at this problem, using the APP on iOS (iPad). There I found that the ?Split¡° option doesn¡®t appear in the Hamburger menu if you select the lead message (normally the oldest one of a topic) - it is only visible in the subsequent messages. Which makes sense of course, as the oldest message defines the topic.?
How this works if the Topic has been created by manually merging multiple messages I don¡®t know, I¡®ve never done that. I can only suspect that you¡®re trying to split the message from the topic that GIO takes as the lead message already.

Okay, I know. RTFM ¨C Read The Full Manual. And I did, and again. And then again. And it¡¯s not working for me.

?

I have a thread of 18 messages that I merged into one ¨C and it worked just like it always has. I¡¯ve done this before. Then I figured out that I wanted a different message within this thread to be the ¡®lead¡¯ message. So I figured ¡®this is easy, I¡¯ll just Split out the one I want as the ¡®new lead¡¯, then Merge the remaining 17 back with it¡­but I cannot get the Split Option to show in the hamburger menu. I¡¯ve played with multiple combinations (followed the instructions ¡°to a T¡± at least a few times, then tried other combinations) and no been able to get the hamburger to allow the Split option.

?

Obviously, unless I take a video of what I¡¯m doing, or amass a bunch of screen shots, I can¡¯t show you what I¡¯m doing, when, and how. But I can at least ask for help in someone confirming that I should be able to Split one message out of an 18 message Topic.

?

I¡¯ve thought far enough out that if no one can figure out what I¡¯m doing wrong, or that it really won¡¯t work for them either, or there¡¯s another way that I haven¡¯t figured out, I can go in and play with the Message Topics and alter them to attempt to achieve my objective.

That makes things somewhat easy.? Go to the site, make sure that you're logged out, and ask for a password/login to be sent to that address.? If you get one, don't use it yet!? Now go to the site and login with your new account.? Go to the account page and choose Delete My Account at the lower right.? You'll have to type in "I understand" (without the quotes) in order for it to actually be deleted.? Once you're sure the new account has been deleted, use the link that was emailed to your old account.? Once you're on the site, click on your name at the upper right.? Then use the instructions that Bruce gave you earlier to change the email address for that account.? You'll get an email at the new address that you'll need to reply to that verifies the change.? At that point, I believe everything is done.? You should be in all of your old groups with the same status as before, just with a new address.

Yes, I still can receive emails on my old croberts@... but have been notified that will be only for a few more days.? I cannot send on that email.

I have been able to activate my new email (croberts91938@...) on ONE of the groups I own by using another Admins help, however that is not the main ones I'm concerned about.? They have no other Admins on board and contains all messages, personnel, survivors, and photos of the old White Alice Communication System from back in the 50's-60's during the cold war...would be a real shame to lose them..? Also when trying to access some pages I get a "clear text not permitted"....may be part of my problem.? Whatever you can do to help me will be much appreciated.

The instructions I posted, were because he was saying he was able to get email from his old email address. The only thing he was missing, was that he needed to send an email login link to the old email address so that he could go in and change that email address. Others have reported that they've never been able to get the merge thing to work, when I've done it, and it's worked just fine. I've never had a problem of getting the merge account to work. And even as a blind person, and that speaks volumes. I would almost rather him forward me the email me the login link and provide the email address to the old account, and the new email address, and I will help him complete the merge. I've had no issues of doing this for other individuals.

Truth be told, the problem is that Yahoo made it so bloody convoluted to change your email. When Mark was developing groups.io, he intentionally made it very simple. Just go into your account and change your email shown and save that. It's like changing license plates on a car - you don't sell the car first, you just change that tag. But people are so used to having to go to all kinds of trouble that they don't comprehend just how simply it's done.
