Re: Unsubscribed from my own group where I was owner

Hello Andy and all

When this happens and it's happened before, I signal all of the messages from clients etc; as "not spam" and as this has happened before, I assume that I did this for GroupsIO in the past
But what happened two days ago was exceptional as nearly all the emails from regular correspondences was in the spam folder when I looked.

Have you added those group addresses/domains to your Whitelist/Safe Senders list or whatever Ymail calls it?? Groups.io messages should not be ending in your spam folder but then again with Y you never know sometimes.

Cheers,

Re: hashtags missing from in .mbox file

Thank you for the excellent responses, Bruce.? I'm looking into the API now.

Unfortunately, to do that I suspect you will have to query the databases in situ using the API.

Docs available at?/api?and there's a discussion group at??

Re: hashtags missing from in .mbox file

That definitely makes sense, Bruce, thanks.? As you can surmise, I'm trying to get an offline export of all messages with associated hashtags.? I need the data structured in this way in order to perform a subsequent analysis of it via AI tools like vector embedding, langchain, etc.

I do see that the full export from groups.io includes a `hashtags.json` file, and each object in the array contained therein contains a `topic_count` property.? But there doesn't appear to be anything in the exported data that would allow me to reconstruct which topics are associated with which hashtags.

It's common for a mail client to deactivate links for a message that is in a spam/junk folder. Normally, if you mark the message as not junk/spam and it gets moved back to your Inbox, the links will work OK.

I can see why this would be pretty disconcerting.

Where is the association between topics/messages and hashtags being stored if it is not hard-coded into the messages.mbox file??

Some of what I'm going to say in response to this is speculative and is based on the following observations:
1) As you probably know, hashtags are associated with topics, not messages.
2) When a hashtag is retroactively added, it does not update any of the associated messages (i.e.: it does not change what's seen in View Source).
3) When an email comes in with an added hashtag as a reply to an existing topic:
? ? a) the threading algorithm does not change fields within the topics database, so you won't see the new hashtag online...but
? ? b) the added hashtag does appear in the subject line for those receiving individual emails (and undoubtedly, in your mbox file, too).

Putting this all together (and as best I can tell):
1) Online message storage only reflects whatever was received via email and/or entered into the online message editor.
2) If that message is a new topic, a topic record is created at that time.
3) If a message is subsequently edited, it is stored as another message (so we can do the "view changes" thing).
4) If any new message comes in that meets the threading criterion, it is simply added to the topic without changing the topic record.?
5) Subsequent changes to a topic occur only within the separate, online topics database.
6) For online display (or when building a digest), header information is pulled from the topics database, and only the message body comes from the messages database.

Generally, the mbox export reflects only what was received originally (i.e. what's in View Source) and is designed primarily for compatibility with mail clients, not necessarily to completely reconstruct the topics database upon re-import.

I hope I'm making sense here.

Regards,
Bruce

Go to the board subgroup and click on the Subscription menu item. My guess is that your Email Delivery setting is not the same as in the other two subgroups.

If you were the sole Owner of the group, you would not have been unsubscribed. You can't even remove yourself until you make someone else an Owner.

Mail clients are not consistent in their behavior when clicking the "reply" button. Most will address the message to the Reply-to: address in the message header (as they should, in accord with RFC2822), but a significant fraction ignore the standard and send it to whatever appears in the From: line.

I am unable to replicate this. Is there anything "special" about sending a message to a group using BCC?
No.

Re: Unsubscribed from my own group where I was owner

Having multiple email accounts registered as owner is a good idea. Just make sure they are from different providers. I run a small group for my neighbors and had? two owner accounts registered that were hosted on a domain I own. Unfortunately I decided to get rid of that domain having forgotten that was where my owner email addresses were hosted. I was locked out. Fortunately there was a grace period on canceling the domain and I was able to reactivate it and get back into Groups.io. My owner accounts are now hosted with various providers.

All messages he has sent to the group are replies, not original posts. I have no way to tell if they were sent via BCC.??He may be talking about other groups I don't know about. In any case, I'm no longer pursuing this issue.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Unsubscribed from my own group where I was owner

Hello Malcolm and everyone

Nice idea but it was actually Ymail that threw a wobbly (went crazy) and put all my incoming mails into my spam folder, triggering

And this included the warning/resubscribe notification from GroupsIO and even when I found this in my spam, the links were deactivated.

This is not the first time this has happened to me, but the first time I didn't get the vital "resubscribe" email

What would happen if I was the only owner and got unsubscribed? Would that leave a group without an owner to fix the problem?

Should single owners therefore register several email addresses so that even if one gets this problem, they can still get back in as owner via another email account?

I don't think this is the work of another owner, at least not intentionally, as the owners are friends, but I have asked them if any of them were messing around with the settings last night.

In the meantime, to try to work out what has happened, what can we do? I can't see the activity log of course as I'm no longer subscribed. Can anyone at GroupsIO check it for me and who should I ask?

Thanks

So you are a member of three subgroups and receive messages only from two. (Edit: and owner)
Are you receiving messages from the main group as well. You don't mention the main group.

Have you checked your subscription? Check email delivery history.

There is also useful list of things to check in the Help FAQ.?

Not Receiving Subgroup Emails

I am the ¡°owner¡±/administrator of a groups.io group for a musical society which has three subgroups: the chorale, the orchestra, and the board of directors.? As a past president of the society and a current member of both the chorale and the board of directors I am also a member of all three subgroups.?

As a member of all three subgroups, I get emails from the chorale and the orchestra, however I haven¡¯t been getting emails for the board of directors since July.?

I am checked off as a member of all three subgroups, but I still receive nothing sent to the board.? Re: hashtags missing from in .mbox file

Yes, that's right ... these are hashtags added to topics retroactively.

For the messages I checked on my group, the hashtag is part of the Subject: line.? Were the hashtags added after the fact?? That may lead to discombobulation, but the ones I checked were correct.

If they are going through when sending as BCC, then Groups.io must be interpreting them as not any special status.

Members don't have to use the footers. Essentially they are the same. Just a convenience if they use Reply To Group.
If they wish to reply to Member, using the footer is easier.
