Re: Group Addresses in Footer not showing as mailto links in emails
John,
But the ones in the middle which I can change from "post" down toThe text entry box for Message Footer addins in Settings page is plain text. Apparently Groups.io auto-linkifies http(s): URLs when the footer is inserted into a formatted email message, but does not do so with mailto: URLs. The email interface of the member receiving the message may also play a role in this. Gmail's web interface, for example, auto-linkified the email address (showing "mailto:" as plain text). When that same message was seen in Thunderbird (via IMAP from Gmail) it did not linkify the email address of the mailto: URL. Lena's Perl script. This is free, and you can do it right now. The main downside is it requires quite a lot of savvy on your part to get it set up, and the posting dates are not retained. You also cannot reattach any attachments, if that's important to you. 2. The groups.io mbox import service. This retains both message ownership and proper posting dates, but not attachments. You will have to pay for Premium Yearly on the destination group ($220) to get them to do it. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/27438 3. PGO2GIO software. Rumor has it that this will reattach your message attachments, but like Lena's script, suffers from being unable to reconstruct the message "ownership" or posting date. It costs $50 (minimum), but at this point remains in beta testing, with no clear release date. More information at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io#Uploading-a-message-archive?ff. # I was a bit confused when I got the downloaded-from-yahoo zip.The group names are at the end of each folder name within the large zip file. Locate the "IG" folder in your download and extract it. Within that extracted folder should be a "messages.zip" file containing all the mbox files. It's up to you to find the right ones and ensure they are operated on. mbox files can be opened in Notepad or any other plain-text editor, but there will be a lot of header information and html, which confuses some people. If you want to read it as emails, you can open it as a mail folder in Thunderbird with the importexporttools add-on, in Apple Mail, and probably some other email clients, too. As for importing, if you use Lena's Perl script, I suggest you practice on a subgroup first. That way you can just delete the subgroup and repeat until you get it working to your satisfaction. If you use groups.io's service, just make darn sure you tell Mark exactly which [sub]group is your intended destination, and provide the correct "messages.zip" file. Regards, Bruce |

Re: Using GIFs as Cover Photos
Tommy,
There's no real downside as such, other than an animated GIF being somewhat larger than a static (single-frame) GIF. Whether an animated GIF plays is entirely a function of the player (so the web browser for instance); most players that don't support the animation will just show the first frame. On that basis, if the cover picture isn't intended to convey information per se you're covered (pun intentional!). If it does - for instance it has a logo - just make sure that at least the first frame in the GIF is an 'information' frame. Most (all?) modern browsers have supported GIF animation for some time. There are arguably better formats for animations, such as APNG, but they're less widely supported at the moment. |

Re: Group with same name
Lin,
I believe it is possible.? WHY?? Our Yahoo group had 3 spin-offs.? Over there the names were nearly all the same thing.? Now, with Yahoo as a listserv and the owners are all gone, our membership chose to re-unite all of the groups back to one.? The sub-groups are all the splits for archive history and the main is going forward all UNITED.? :) For our group, having another one with a similar name would be missing content and key members that have decades of experience.? Thus, another group with a similar name would be short lived not having resources nor subject experts in our hobby and farming skill sets with certain machines. ? BMaverick |

Hi Jonathan.
Thanks for your reply. You wrote, regarding the inbox files in the zip that came from Yahoo,... "...Look at the full name of the folders inside the zip file....." I¡¯ll take a look thanks. I imagine that means that if/when I or groupsIO uses those MBOX files to Import the Archive into one of my newly created groupsIO groups I WILL be Able to specify exactly which inbox files to use an import from. Right? BTW.... is there any way, our utility, for me to go directly into those inbox files and see the archives read them or search them or whatever? Re: Comcast problems again?
In this region the cable provider was Time-Warner (now Spectrum), not Comcast. Due to ridiculous restrictions (4MB Inbox max, whitelisting, etc.) everyone I know who had TWC has switched to Gmail. It's not as painful as it seems if you set up mail forwarding, so all your correspondents' mail to Comcast is forwarded to your new address until you get them straightened around. Try this Google search comcast.net email forwarding Unfortunately, part of the job of being a group owner/moderator is being a computer tutor for those less skilled. Larry |
Re: Group with same name
There is also the possibility of lookalike characters (homoglyphs) being present. This is especially the case when you look at all the possibilities in the full Unicode character set (if Unicode names are supported). Re: Some messages not displaying fully
A few possibilities: There were known issues between Yahoo Neo and (at least some) HTML emails where the message bodies were not visible in the web interface. (Unless you used the view message source option). I have seen it in cases where the sending email client only added basic mail formatting tags. There were additional issues over the last few days the Yahoo Neo web interface was up, where sometimes messages would load fully and sometimes they would be blank, as the server was throwing intermittent errors. Depending on how PGO was extracting messages from Yahoo (if it was taking the HTML version), and depending on what errors Yahoo was throwing when PGO was running, I would expect some of the symptoms you are seeing. Recommendation: use the Yahoo Get My Data (GMD) request process. It will give you the message archive in MBOX format. This should also avoid the scenarios I listed above, and it will give you files you can view in Mozilla Thunderbird or Sylpheed or other email programs that support importing from MBOX. I have also read that has (or is working on) a GMD import option for premium groups. Note: there is also the possibility that something isn't working right with itself, but I expect the other scenarios to be more likely. Look at the full name of the folders inside the zip file. They are very long and start out with meaningless (to me at least) numbers, but at the end of the folder name is the name of the group the files they contain came from.

Re: Group Addresses in Footer not showing as mailto links in emails
John,
But the ones in the middle which I can change from "post" down to "help" do not even though they seem to show as blue in this response from my cut and paste. The custom footer one can set (like you have) doesn't really support what you are trying to do with email addresses.? It's more of a text-only box, no support for HTML or RichText like many of the other boxes like setting the group's description page, which has the formatting options on a ribbon at the top of the box.? The custom footer does have a very-very limited "live-link" functionality and that's only if you include a full URL with http(s)://... which it will recognize as a URL and make it active for you.? But it doesn't recognize the mailto: prefix for an email address so it doesn't make that an active link. IMO, you should post this at the beta forum () as it can be considered missing functionality, after all it recognizes the HTTP: but not the MAILTO:, so it should be an easy fix/enhancement. Cheers, Christos |
