unsubscribed for deleting mail in the spam folder
Message from a member of two of my lists:
I never unsubscribed from this list yet I received 2 emails that I was being removed because I deleted some mail that was in my spam folder.?? ?
I resubscribed (hopefully correctly) and I think everything should be fine.
?
Seems like there is something fishing going on with the programming stuff for both of these lists. Why would this be part of the list software? Rachel |
Transferring to a subgroup
#subgroups
#transfer
Can the archives from a Y! group be transferred into a subgroup? We had two groups on Y! One group was the main group. The other independent Y! group was made up entirely of members of the main group with a special interest that not all members of the main group were interested in. We transferred the main group several weeks ago. This seems like exactly what subgroups are made for and I set up a subgroup of our main group.
Now we want to get the subgroup going. We'd like to move the Y! archive for the secondary group into the archive for the groups.io subgroup. Is this possible? If so, what is the recommended procedure? One issue is ownership of the subgroup. I am listed as owner and moderator of the subgroup. The main group has several other owners and moderators. I would like to make them owners and moderators of the subgroup also, but they don't appear on the join list. How do I handle this? Thanks, Marv Thanks, Marv |
Re: E.U. Issues with Transfers?
ken,
The question at hand had to do with material copied from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io. Neither TOS requires the poster to relinquish ownership of their copyright, but both assert a license to display the content. My point in citing the TOS is that such language would be unnecessary if Jim's claim that merely posting online puts your content in the public domain were true. That said, I'm not particularly happy that Groups.io's TOS requires the grant of a perpetual and irrevocable license to use our material. I much prefer the vastly more modest license Yahoo required. However I have yet to feel strongly enough about this issue to take my marbles and go home (back to Yahoo or wherever else). I don't think that license question has a bearing on the topic of EU and/or UK privacy laws, and whether copying content from Yahoo to Groups.io violates those laws, which is the subject of this topic. So if you want to talk about the license terms, that should probably be a New Topic. Shal |

I don't believe there are any realistic copyright issues in making these

transfers, nor that the GDPR will affect that area for groups. Technically, every time you send a reply by email (or via a group web page) quoting all or part of the original message you are in breach of the sender's copyright. This has been the case ever since email was invented. Have you been sued for it yet? The GDPR is primarily about protecting personal data, which roughly means anything by which a person may be identified. The nature of groups means that email addresses are distributed to members by email whenever anyone posts a message, so the data protection needed for that purpose appears not to be a problem either. It certainly isn't changed by a transfer from Yahoo. What may be a problem is the exporting of any other personal information (as in the profile) from a server in the EU to one in USA, and possibly also being able to show how such information is protected (or why it doesn't need to be). Another possible problem is the requirement for the platform, or maybe the groups, to show they have the permission of the member to send them emails. That clearly is no problem with people joining directly, but may be with transfers. That's one for the lawyers to sort out. I've no doubt there may be more that's relevant, but most of this legislation is aimed at companies like banks, and possibly the likes of Facebook and Google, which handle large volumes of much more personal and important data. I have a copy of the full legislation, but it's huge and complex (and the fines for getting it wrong are also huge). I haven't had time to do more than glance through it, and I'm not a lawyer. However, I'm sure the copyright issue is not a serious problem with regard to this particular legislation. I'm certainly intending to transfer my Yahoo groups over here. Re: Members joining anew group, a reason?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI have my message set to go out when someone tries to join.? It is in Settings, Member Notices, then I selected Pending Subscription.? Since my group is restricted, that message goes out before their approval.

Hello My group has just been moved from Yahoo where when new members joined the group they needed to give a reason why they wanted to join As a moderator I need to see this reason in order to approve them to the group However I don't see this option here in the setup. Does it exist in settings somewhere? Thanks |

Re: E.U. Issues with Transfers?
Marina,
I am going through the relocating process now, well before May, do youI'm not a lawyer, and I specifically don't know UK or EU law, but I think it is very unlikely. More likely a copyright claim would be aimed at the web site displaying the material, Groups.io. Under US law there is a safe harbor provision which prevents such claims from being taken to court as long as the web site follows a set procedure for administering the claim. For the copyright owner that procedure is onerous enough to discourage most people from making the claim unless the work in question has commercial value. If the copyright owner does file the claim your personal downside risk is that Groups.io removes the claimed content. No lawyers involved unless you decide to counter-claim; then the copyright owner must file suit or go home. Shal |

All,
? I don't think you should be worried about posts or files or photos - if you are then don't transfer ... just create a new group on groups.io and invite the membership to follow you (the owner/moderator). And, of course, 'shut down' the old group (all messages are moderated) for a while (a few months), and then delete the old group. ? They posted them -online- and by doing so gave up any copyrights to them (all 3) 'completely and forever'.? That stuff is already in the public domain. ? The only 'issue' that I know of is related to 'moving' their email ADDRESS to some new location (and, specifically to a place that "runs on email"). - Jim B. [Mod note: the above is incorrect: members posting to Yahoo Groups have given Yahoo a limited license to display their work. They have not given up ownership or copyright in their work. See Yahoo TOS paragraph 9 and specifically 9.1.] |
Re: Subgroup creation, better before or after Yahoo transfer?
Marina,
By the way, I've found out that you cannot invite people to aTrue, because they must first be members of the primary group. You invite them there. You can either add them (which is a Premium Group feature, if I am notNot for subgroups. Even in Basic groups subgroups have a Direct Add page. There you see a list of the primary group members with a checkbox to add them to the subgroup. What you can't do (not even in a Premium group) is Direct Add someone into a subgroup who isn't already in the primary group. or they must joing the group on their own (through the subscribeOr, in the Admin section of the primary group there is a Subgroups page which also shows a list of the primary group members, with checkboxes for each subgroup. There you can conveniently see which subgroups any given person is in, and change them at will. Shal |

We have that setting now and have had it since we started the group. When checked it disallows direct memberships and requires a Moderator to approve the membership. It still doesn't require inputted data from the prospective member. |

Just realised the "Re: Require info from prospective members" topic covered what i was asking. So I'm sure not the only one asking for this feature, hope someone takes note
Have to say surprised such a basic handy option is not included anyway, Apart from that no issues at all |
Mods given editing power in member's signatures?
Hi All,
I thought this had been discussed before but can't find it here or in Beta.? Does anyone know if it has been suggested for mods being given editing power for member's signatures?? If so what was the verdict?? Our group members all have folders and photo albums whose links need to be in their signatures so our support team can find their info easily.? I cannot tell you how hard it is to explain to some of the computer challenged members how to set up their signatures.? When we give them the links to copy and paste, half the time they are not linkified.? Sometimes the hidden formatting causes crazy signature texts.?? -- -LeeAnne ?Archivist |
