Re: Transfer ? - Members Jumping the Gun

That helps a lot, Bruce - thanks!

If I may follow up:? if we switch the new GIO group to "new members require approval" and then hold off on approving them until after the transfer completes, would that allow the old user to be transferred in the correct transfer process, thus preserving their Y!G "group policy" posting permission?

Thanks Again,
Saundra

No.?

What about things like posting permissions?? For the new GIO, we have new members moderated for the first three posts; the old Y!G was set to moderate new members which we manually switched after a few posts when possible.

?

Here's a scenario.? Harry was a longstanding member of the old Y!G who was no longer moderated.? Harry jumped the gun & joined the new GIO group where new members are moderated for the first three posts while the transfer was in process.? Assuming he used the same email address, which posting permissions will he have?

Harry's subscription will not be transferred, and he will remain on "new users moderated" until he posts three times here in GIO.

You could submit it to support, post it on the beta group as a suggested change, fill in the blanks for everyone, or add something to your Welcome message (and Guidelines?) saying that it's required.? I'd opt for the last one.? Since Notes and Exchange can be configured to avoid that problem, you could also contact the people in charge of them.

Re: Paid to Move but problems

Sounds like a similar thing is happening to me, I was able to transfer 2 out of 3 groups before the Groups.io system would not accept a payment. This has been going on since 10/21 when the price was still $110.

As of 10/23 I am still unable to pay Groups.io for my third group even though the price has doubled since I had successfully paid for my first two at $110 and attempted the third and was declined using the same credit card(s).

All payment methods I tried using over the past two days and nights were confirmed GOOD by my bank who didn't even see the transaction from Groups.io hit them let alone anything being declined, the bank only sees the two good group payments.

I cannot reach anyone at Groups.io via e-mail or the phone number on the two paid invoices which has an 'unmonitored' voice mail message that tells me to use email to contact them at [email protected]

I left my phone number in my email to [email protected], no call back yet. .

I am feeling quite screwed now and the first two groups are useless on IO without the third regardless of price.

Thanks for reading,

Got it, thank you!!

Well at least the good news is the transfer has begun. Just super relieved with that.

This part is important. You also won't please everyone and just need
to move the group even though some don't want that to happen.

Re: Transfer ? - Members Jumping the Gun

You might consider using 1 moderated message instead of 3. You can
probably figure out if the person is questionable on the first post
and set them to moderated if you have concerns. This means you only
have to reply to their first message to moderate it so it posts.

If you have, say, 1,000 members, for example, that's 2,000 less
moderations you'll have to do. I do agree that at least the first post
should be moderated, though. And depending on your group 3 times might
be appropriate, but in my experience, I catch the spammers the first
time. The rest of the "problem" posts are from people who hijacked
someone's email account. Or, on Yahoo, where it was possible at one
time (at least, if not still) to spoof an email address (easy but I
won't give directions here), people could spoof an email address,
making it appear to come from a member's address. That happened on a
few occasions well after the 3 moderations would have happened.

Depending on your group, you can also make it easier on yourself for
new members to join automatically by not making it a restricted group.
Of course, that depends on the nature and substance of your group. If
it discusses medical issues, for instance, you would want to restrict
entry into the group and use a questionnaire to ferret out people who
should not be members. If you have a restricted group and have to
approve new members, but don't use some additional step to verify the
quality of the prospective member, you're wasting your time since you
can't tell by an email address (in most cases) if they're good or bad.
Just my 2 cents, subject to inflation.

Just go to the Settings page scroll down to the Privacy area, and change the Visibility box to say "Group listed in directory, private messages."? You DO NOT want to delete a group if it has the name you want to use.? Once deleted, that name isn't available for some undetermined time.? If it must be deleted, say to make the messages public, change the name to some nonsense before deleting.? nunvnurjnv for example.

You can use any email address that you've created an account with on Groups.io.? Remember to use that address when accessing the group for admin duties unless you also make your other addresses owners of the group.

Re: Deleting a YGroup VS waiting for Yahoo's Axe to fal . . .!

The one thing we should try to avoid is the issue that many Yahoo Groups experienced over the years.? When the Owner left, there was no one there.? Think of second life which hung on as a digital wasteland for years.? I have put all the members to moderated, and in December when all the content is gone, I plan to turn off the light and close the door (Delete the group.)

Re: Cover photo choice?

Susan,

I used Google Images to find one and saved it to my PC, then uploaded
it to GIO for the cover photo.

If you're concerned about copyright, make sure the image isn't under
copyright protection.

Re: Deleting a YGroup VS waiting for Yahoo's Axe to fal . . .!

Paul,

What I did after my group was moved to Groups.io, and I got everything in order at our new home, was I went back to my Yahoo group and closed it down for good. I sent a Special post that would reach all the membership a week before closing the old group down, telling them basically on the following week the Y group will be no more, and everything from then on would be at our Groups.io site. I didn't have any problems, except with a few members that weren't reading their email from the group. At some point you just have to cut the cord with the old group, and move on with the new group.
