Re: groups.io employees?

I am also wondering if he/they are prepared for the onslaught of yahoogroups migration?? I would assume a tidalwave of free accounts is heading to and I hope he/they can keep up.

I don't know. My use of the plural was referring to we, the members and
mods of GMF.

In beta he has mentioned other people working on the mobile app, and on
a user's manual, and a long time ago on the Search function; but those
are likely contractors rather than employees.

Dave,

?

You could also do what I have done with your home page picture, still using the 900x300 banner constraint /g/foggers . I got in the habit of doing this banner technic after the Neo upgrade on YG, if you could call it an upgrade. I generally have to resize pictures to make them work within the constraints, but overall I¡¯ve been able to live with it.

How will that provide an archive?

Linda -- I agree that this change eliminates a lot of the benefits of Yahoo Groups, with the understanding that those functions have frankly been deteriorating for some time now.

Having said that...in the days before the web, there was a software called listserv that allowed people to communicate in a very similar fashion. GNU Mailman remains in common use, and many fully functioning groups need only those functions.

Such "mailing lists" played a large role in the demise of the hobby BBS in the 90s. In my own groups, even now, I'd guess that less than 20% of my subscribers have ever bothered to log in.

For those needing only mailing list functionality, Yahoo Groups will remain a viable (albeit somewhat primitive) solution.

Rhoda -- To do this, tick the Restricted Membership checkbox for Spam Control in your group Settings...and that's all. With that setting, you will have to approve people's pending subscriptions, but you will not have to moderate any messages. Please note that there is no provision within groups.io to allow someone to join your group on their own volition and immediately begin posting without moderation. Such a Spam Control setting would provide no spam control at all.

Hope this helps,

... and to add what Bruce wrote, one thing to keep in mind is the recipient's email server size limit.? For example, while Gmail has a 25 MB limit, outlook.com has a 10 MB limit[1].? With this in mind, you don't want an email message with a lot of attachments bounce due to over-limit issues.?

I can understand that if you have dozens of groups to be transferred the costs become unmanagable. In this case I would first of all see which group only has few members. I would then create new groups with the old groups? names in groups.io and invite the old members to the new group.

?

In case of groups with lots of members you could ask them to donate for the transfer.

Although I may have missed something I don't think you specifically stated that your setting up (a lot of) new groups was in order to facilitiate a mass - migration from Yahoo.

I am at a loss to understand why you would think it was "one payment per account holder" rather than "one payment per migrated group".

If you ran a supermarket and 50 people each came in to but a pack of frozen peas you would charge each of them the price of a single pack. If a single person came in to buy 50 packs, I greatly doubt if you would let them walk out having paid for just a single pack.

Mark introduced the "migration fee" to cover the time and costs involved. IMHO your expecting a major discount is somewhat unreasonable.

You'd need to do it manually if you're not paying for a transfer.? It can be time consuming and "ownership" of all the items will be in your name.? If the person that originally uploaded a picture is on the new group, you can manually assign ownership to them (if you know who it was.)? There's currently not a similar function for Files.

I have exported my Yahoo Group membership lists and will use that to send invitations to join the groups.io groups. This works for me because all my groups are small.

I see the several ways to use third-party software to download pictures and files. Once downloaded, how can these be uploaded to the groups.io groups?

Hi Shal,

I¡¯m in the process of moving from Yahoo Groups to ?- just waiting for the transfer to be done - and one of the few concerns I had was that ?was a one-man show the last time I investigated it.

GMF is a user-to-user help group, no employees here.

Samuel,

Conversations <-----
...
Somewhere I've also heard that message archives will be removed, so,
but, what is a message archive? Is that simply all old messages?
Conversations is what Yahoo calls the group's message archive. So yes, the online storage of all prior messages.

It sounds as if you would still be able to use the group to send
mails, but you won't be able to read mails online (since no mails are
stored online anymore). Is that how you understand it as well?
You won't be able to use the group's Conversations section to post a New Topic or Reply, but you will still be able to post or reply to the group from your email interface. Hint: be sure your membership is set to receive Individual Emails.
