Have these issues been resolved? #photos #website #files #images

When I was struggling with the demise of Wikispaces a year or so ago, there were a few issues that made me migrate elsewhere than groups.io. Now facing the end of my Yahoo Groups, can someone kindly answer these questions and save me the effort of retesting and researching?

  1. images and files not publicly visible. You have to be logged into see them.
  2. No permalinks for images inside Photos.
  3. No batch import of pages.
Thanks!

Tom

Susan -- You don't need a subgroup, but you might want one, as in the case of my reply to Glenn.

How is it different from a regular group?
Please see the GMF wiki entries at?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Subgroups and?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Why-use-a-Subgroup?and come back with any unanswered questions.

Oh, maybe I take that back.

Remote images (where the image file itself is stored on a server rather than conveyed in the email message) may still be an exception. These would be images that use the http: protocol in the src parameter of the <img> tag. If so that's probably just as well.

If Mark "fixed" those that could cause some consternation for folks trying to deliberately avoid adding to their Groups.io storage quota.

Bruce,

Embedded photos ought to. If you find a (recent) case where one didn't that would probably be worth reporting to [email protected] as a bug report. Mark claims to have fixed the exceptions I once knew about.

Bruce why do we need a subgroup? How is it different from a regular group? I just created a new group.

Re: Is there max. number members allowed in xfer from Yahoo? #transfer

sally.suzy,

I saw an old post mentioning a limit of 1000 members but that's not in your wiki and not in your transfer instructions.

1000 is the limit that Yahoo imposes when you export your Manage Members list to a CSV or TSV file. It does not limit the automated transfer (nor tools like or the ).

Absolutely, we would love a searchable member directory. This is an important feature.

Yes. See?/static/googletransfer

Essentially, only the subscribers can be transferred, not any messages; and the entire process is done through emails to support.

Do I have to say anything special during the transfer request?
You have to create the subgroup first. Then it appears that you need only provide the location of the target subgroup and a cloud link to the file containing the prospective member list.

Remember that if you transfer people to a subgroup, they are also added to the main group. There is no provision to have subgroup members who are not subscribed to the main group.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Shouldn't be a problem, /static/googletransfer? And it doesn't look like there's a charge for Google groups (yet?)? Remember "Due to a bug in Google Groups, we are unable to transfer the archives for your group."

create subgroup with transfer

Glenn Glazer

A search of the archives didn't find anything on this, forgive me if I missed it.

Right now, we have a main group with a subgroup. What we would like to do is transfer an existing Google group and make it a second subgroup of the main group.

Is this possible? Do I have to say anything special during the transfer request?

Thanks,

Glenn

Any photos attached to a message that are at least 100 pixels in the shortest dimension will automatically appear in the Emailed Photos folder (unless you disable photo albums altogether).

Embedded photos may or may not, depending on how they are embedded.

Adding photos to the site

? Yahoo is basically shutting down so I am trying to set up my group here.? Can I get photos attached to a message to automatically go to a file on the Photos page?

Thanks
LaVerne?

The limits you are referring to was for a free Yahoo transfer (pre-February). Now that all transfers require the Premium plan, there is no such limit that I'm aware of.

Su -- There is no mechanism within the web interface that would permit someone to upload/merge messages into an existing group message archive. Rumor has it that support has done this for others, using a file in Unix mbox format...but there has been no verifiable report of it happening for at least two years.?

Frankly, it seems unlikely that he would allow this kind of "back door" to the transfer process so that people can avoid paying the fee, but you never know. I suggest you contact support directly and report back here on what kind of response you get so we can share it with others.?

Good luck,
Bruce

Not that I'm aware of. I know there was at least one group that transferred over 10,000 members a few years ago.

To clarify, that's after one year of premium service.? You can actually change it any time, but it won't take effect until your current term expires.? Many folks did (and still do) upgrade to premium for a month now and then for specific tasks.

Is there a limit or maximum number of members in a yahoogroup that the automated transfer process allows?? I saw an old post mentioning a limit of 1000 members but that's not in your wiki and not in your transfer instructions.

Larry -- It is a requirement that, before you do a transfer, you pay for one year of Premium ($110). After that, you may downgrade.

If you don't want your files/photos/messages transferred, or are willing to do it manually yourself, you can still initiate a new group on the Basic plan and not pay anything.

It has been a while since I checked how to move Yahoo Groups but I thought with such small groups and limited storage the groups.io service was free.
The transfer process is not fully automated and takes some manpower. At one point it was free, but the volume of transfers eventually reached the point that groups.io management could no longer continue doing that much work without any compensation.

The price of procrastination, I guess.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

I doubt that it has anything to do with the length.

If your group has public archives, the domain information is automatically stripped from the online message archive. This is to keep spammers and bots from mining your public messages for valid email addresses.

The exception is any post with the groups.io domain, in which case it is retained.

If absolutely necessary, try posting it like this:? myemail(at)domain(dot)net [or something to that effect]. I've found that most human beings are sharp enough to figure out what that really means, while (hopefully) the bots might struggle with it a little bit.

Bruce

Transferring Small Yahoo Groups

I have just joined this forum. I own two long-standing Restricted Yahoo Groups with about 100 members each and well under 1 GB of pictures and files.

With the recent changes in Yahoo Groups I want to move these groups to groups.io, including the membership, pictures and files now on the Yahoo Group. When I just read the instructions to do this, I note groups.io now "ask that you sign up for the Premium Yearly plan."

It that Premium Plan a request or a requirement for such small groups?

It has been a while since I checked how to move Yahoo Groups but I thought with such small groups and limited storage the groups.io service was free.
