Re: Logging in to the Groups.io website for the first time
Hi Brian, Here's from the wiki -? If you are a member of a group but haven't logged into Groups.io yet: 1) cllick on Log In (top right). 2) click on Email me a link to log in. Don't click on Find a Group or Start a Group if you just want to create a password. 3) go to your email and click on the link. Follow instructions. Be sure to check your spam or junk mail if you don't see the email from Groups.io 4) in the upper right you will see your name and an arrow (upside down triangle) 5) click on the arrow 6) then click profile. ?You are now on the login page where you can set a personal password that is a minimum of 6 characters.? or use one of the other options - Facebook, Google, etc. If you want to use those as well, please fill those out. If you join other groups on IO, the password you make here will be your password for them as well. Forgot your password? Click on the link on the homepage, just below the password box. This forum has open archive and wiki so you can check the wiki without logging in ?-?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home Frances |
Logging in to the Groups.io website for the first time
Brian Vogel
Hello All,
? ? ? ? ?Since I participate exclusively via the web interface I've long ago forgotten how one initially gets access to it. ?There are a number of folks on some groups on which I participate that have never logged in to the website. ?Since there are some controls under "Advanced Preferences" on the subscription page that cannot be set via the email interface (or at least not that I know of) I'm trying to write something up about them. ?However, I know that the first response will be, "But I don't have a password for the website and I have no idea how to get one to allow me to log on," so I'm asking here so I can include that information. ? ? ? ? ? ?I know this has been discussed either here or on beta (or both) in the past, but I'm not having much luck in getting what I need to come up in a search. Thanks Lena. Had assumed the +help was aimed at users and would only return what admins could already see. Could somebody who knows how their way around better add something to the help page and/or wiki to list the subscription change options? I got back:

Re: So far I'm liking this new message editor.
Hi Tony,
I too would like to have a look at and use TinyMCE. Can't figure out[email protected] will work. As will his corporate email, which if you receive individual messages from beta@ you could copy from any recent message of his. Shal |
Re: So far I'm liking this new message editor.
But in the mean time, please feel free to add your own observations and comments about using the new editor.Ok, Shal, thank you. I work both on-screen and via regular email, but I'm shifting to more on-screen to be able to play with it a bit more. Ginny (who still thinks the no-more-new-paragraph with "enter" is the best thing since sliced bread) |
Re: So far I'm liking this new message editor.
Hi Ginny,
I've created a Wiki page to start collecting observations on using the TinyMCE editor. I've boldly titled it Message editing tips and tricks, but it isn't in that form yet - just loose observations. Because it is such a rough draft at this point I haven't linked to it from any of the other Wiki pages. I probably won't until TinyMCE goes "live" because otherwise it would be confusing to readers who aren't testing the new editor. But in the mean time, please feel free to add your own observations and comments about using the new editor. Shal |
Re: So far I'm liking this new message editor.
I'm with you, Shal. I emailed Mark yesterday that if he needed more peeps, add me in. There are many new good features - but the absolute BEST is that "enter" is a line break and not a paragraph!
That has been driving me nuts. The formatting options are great as are the basic commands. Most of the extras are in the "Show Advanced Toolbar" toggle, so if you don't need/want them you can shrink the toolbar. The source code display is well presented; preview is handy. Like you, I've only taken it on a few test drives but I would be quite happy to see it go live, from what I've played with so far. For those wanting to get a sneak peek, I think Mark is still taking volunteers... Ginny T. |
Re: Several questions
Bob,
I apologize if this is not the proper forumfor this .This group is perfectly appropriate. As would be Group_Help. /g/Group_Help/ I notice when someone replies to a post using the Reply to GroupShort answer: Yes, use the "View/Reply Online" link instead. The problem with the "Reply To Group" link is that it is a mailto: link. Meaning that all of the action happens within your email interface, not under Groups.io's control. I'm not sure it would be feasible to ball the entire message quote up into the mailto: URL, URLs have length limits. Maybe a short snippet. Mailto does allow the URL to supply a text to be put in to the message body, but I wonder how many email interfaces actually implement it. As I recall, some interfaces were rumored not to even respect the subject parameter. A manual work-around would be to copy then message body (or the part you want to quote) before clicking the link, then paste it into the body when that page opens (paste as quote, or format it as a quote, whatever works in your email interface). Also, the automatic signature block assumes bottom posting forIt simply places the signature block at the bottom, regardless of how you composed your reply (top, bottom, or inline). Is there any way that top posting of replies can be made and still<strike>Top-posting in email lists is evil and people who do it must be punished.</strike> *Ahem* This is something that might be feasible for Groups.io to fix for those who reply online (that is, via Groups.io's pages). But as J noted it would be a feature request because it isn't implemented that way now. For replies via your email interface the problem is harder: it would require that the Groups.io message processing code be able to tell where your reply ends and the quote begins. The software does try to do that for other reasons (eliding quotes in digest, hiding them online) but different email interfaces do their quoting in different ways, so there's an on-going challenge to "fix" the detection as novel ways of denoting quoted material are discovered. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýSigs at the bottom has been a complaint of mine for some time, and the reason I no longer use an auto sig for email posts. The signature is incorrectly swept into the ellipses by the top posting algorithm. I don't know whether my request to change/fix this ever made if into Trello. Several questions
Bob Cook
I apologize if this is not the proper forumfor this .? I notice when someone replies to a post using the Reply to Group link, a new blank email is generated, stripping the original email post. Is there any way around this? ?Having that link is really handy, but not having the original message is really confusing.? Also, the automatic signature block assumes bottom posting for replies. Is there any way that top posting of replies can be made and still use the automatic signature block? Thanks, Bob |

I used the speech bubble button on the left of the formatting bar to insert a quote my prior message, then tried to break it into sections as I normally do to make inline comments like this one. Inserting and removing newlines did not break it. Nor did attempting to Decrease Indent. Then I noticed that the?¡° (Blockquote) button was pushed. So I selected my inline text and un-pushed it. Rather than removing the Blockquote attribute from just my inline text, it removed it from the entire quoted message. Fine. So I re-applied Blockquote on the prior section and moved on. It currently suffers one of the problems that (I think) got fixed in the old one: if your group "normalizes" HTML it nevertheless allows you to use and see in WYSIWYG formatting features that get stripped by normalization.I reported this one and Mark reports it to be fixed. I haven't retested it. One of the fun things is an insert tool for special characters - ¦¸ is the button icon for it. ¡ú It is a limited set ¡û but has many of the more useful glyphs.I noticed in a view source of my message that the special characters are inserted as named . This probably explains how those particular glyphs were chosen. I tried to insert other Unicode glyphs using the < > (Source code) mode to insert them as numeric references, but that failed. They got converted to asterisks by the editor. Some kind of exploit defense perhaps? Shal ? |

Re: are restricted groups available for the free version of Groups.io
pleo84103,
Are all of the above available with the free version of Groups.ioShort answer: yes. The group we have in yahoo groups is restricted - by that I mean onlyIn both Yahoo Groups and Groups.io, if you know the group's name then you can create the group's subscription address. For Yahoo Groups it is just "-subscribe" appended to the group name in an email message; for Groups.io it is "+subscribe". Also in both Yahoo Groups and Groups.io, a person may apply to join a restricted-membership group by clicking on a button on the group's home page (as an alternative to using the email command). Yahoo Groups has a type of group, "Closed", which Groups.io does not: in Yahoo Groups a "closed" group does not show its home page to non-members and does not allow the subscribe email command - such groups are by invitation only. Any member of the group may postYes. With moderation capabilities similar to Yahoo Groups, but with the added ability to have a member automatically taken off moderation after a set number of approved postings. The group is not visible (nor its archives) on the Yahoo Groups page.As with Yahoo Groups, you can choose whether the Messages are public or members-only, but once you've made them members-only you cannot return them to public. If your group's messages are public, then your group is listed in the Groups.io directory. Otherwise inclusion in the directory is optional. So far I'm liking this new message editor.
Hi All,
As readers of beta@ may know, there's a test of a new message editor afoot, which users can volunteer to join. So if you're the sort of person who likes to puzzle out a new feature, acid test it, and report your findings, you might want to give it a spin. I did, and am using it now. This editor has many more features, and removes one of my pet peeves with the old one. This editor turns Enter into <br/> rather than </p><p>. That's a good thing when you used one of them and wanted a line break. I'm not so sure if it is a good thing when you used two intending them as a paragraph break. Those with some knowledge of HTML will understand what I'm talking about here. If you don't, that's ok. It is (probably) a small point. It currently suffers one of the problems that (I think) got fixed in the old one: if your group "normalizes" HTML it nevertheless allows you to use and see in WYSIWYG formatting features that get stripped by normalization. I've only used it for a few test messages so far, so I wouldn't say that I've given it anything like a good test. One of the fun things is an insert tool for special characters - ¦¸ is the button icon for it. ¡ú It is a limited set ¡û but has many of the more useful glyphs. Gratuitous font change - the Lucida family is one I like. But this needs to be bumped up a bit to match the weight of the default (Helvetica Neue). Or, just to tweak the haters you can write in Comic Sans. Shal |
