Re: Downloading the membership list

LeeAnne,

I just tried to download our membership list but all it did was open
a page in my browser with a long list of names email addys.

How do we get the CSV into a proper file?
I usually copy that whole page (Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C) and paste it into a blank worksheet in Excel. But that's because I'm usually going to do some examination/analysis of it.

If you just want to keep the file for your records, you should be able to use the Save Page As feature in your browser to write the page to a file on your computer.

The download gives you a proper CSV file (comma-separated values).

All you have to do is command your browser to File > Save As, and create
a name & location.

Re: Manual column with in table - can it be done ?

Jules,

I am trying to move all the contents from my yahoo group before I
begin inviting the members over to this new setup from the old group.
A disadvantage of what you're doing is that the content at Groups.io is uploaded by, and hence owned by, you - rather than the member who originally contributed it to your Yahoo group. That's not a problem if the content was contributed to that group by you and/or other moderators originally.

The Groups Transfer agent is able to copy all of the content of your Yahoo Group for you, and it will preserve the linkage between the content and the member who uploaded it.
/static/transfer

A disadvantage of having the transfer agent do it is that it copies the memberships first (so that it can establish those linkages) and then the content. Usually this presents no difficulty, but sometimes the transfer takes a little while to complete, and eager members might start posting and uploading immediately, getting new material mixed in with the transferred material.

I think a solution to that is to use the group's Settings page to prevent member contributions until after the transfer of content has completed. That would be:

[_] Announcement Group (in Group Settings)

and then one of the "Only moderators" settings for each of the areas under the Features section.

If you do this you should probably include that in your pre-transfer announcement to your Yahoo Group members, so they understand why there's a brief before the Groups.io posting and features are enabled for them to contribute.

The far left column I am disregarding as it counts the numbers of
rows.
Note that those are not row numbers in the spreadsheet sense. They are an ID (a sequence number or serial number) assigned to the row at its creation - if you delete a row the other rows do not change number. If you sort by a column the numbers sort with the rest of the row content.

However, I need to adjust the 'actual width' of the left column of
questions. Can someone please explain how this is done.
It does not appear that this can be done.

To be specific the column is too narrow and the words don't wrap
around properly for me.
The column content _should_ word wrap. I'm not sure why they don't for you, it may be a browser issue. Or maybe something about the content of cells (pasted non-break spaces instead of ordinary spaces?). In any case, if no one else here in GMF has a suggestion this might be a bug/issue to report to [email protected]. Tell them the name of the group and the table, the browser you use, your OS and anything about how you created the table that might be unusual.

Thanks in advance, and I apologise in advance if this post is in the
wrong place.
This is the perfect place to ask. In this case, since the feature you want does not appear to exist, one place to look is on the Groups.io to-do list:

And, since I don't see a relevant entry in the Database column there, you can make a request for the feature (manual column width adjustment) in the beta@ group:

I have also tried to create?a database with two columns. ? Basically, the left column is for the questions, the right column is the answers to the questions.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:
/g/beta/message/13576

Some interesting developments this week!

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

* Revamped Help site including new FAQ.

I've always been an advocate for user documentation, and that's been something lagging sorely behind as the site matures. So it is nice to see Mark pay some attention to it.
/static/help

But even more -- we get to help!

Mark invited me to make a copy of the official help page in GMF's wiki.
/g/beta/message/13510

So now we can use this mock-up as a place where GMF members can contribute corrections and additions as proposed updates to the official help page.
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Groups.io-Help-page-Mock-up

* Added Oracle-modified ToS and then rolled it back.

This one caused a bit of a tempest in beta@. Mark has apparently sold Oracle on the idea of using the Groups.io platform for some Java programming message lists. But their lawyers asked for some changes to the Groups.io ToS; which he accepted, then after the tempest, regretted and rolled back.
/g/beta/message/13549

The primary issue was one of privacy. Oracle's lists will be for open source programming, and they wanted the ToS to provide clear license for users to take any of the group content and use it any way they like. That's fine for open source programming, but was a very big NO from groups with private archives and others. No, generally speaking other groups don't want their content taken and re-used (even reposted) elsewhere. Only in very open groups like GMF might that be even close to acceptable.

* Started integrating new editor TinyMCE to replace the existing Summernote editor.

This one I note because it may mean the end of various annoyances I've had with formatting in the on-site New Topic and Reply message composition boxes. OTOH, it may mean the introduction of a whole new set of annoyances. Something to watch for.
/g/beta/message/13534

* Links to Google Maps in database rows with addresses.

This could be handy in groups about local public places. Or maybe in travel or sightseeing groups.

* Topics hashtagged for mods only can now be replied to by members.
* A new option to prevent replies by members.

These two go together, also caused a fair amount of beta@ discussion.
/g/beta/message/13479

Apparently many group moderators thought that such topics could be replied to by members, and had used them with that expectation, while others had used them specifically to exclude member replies to such topics. So Mark changed the function to match the member-replies are ok expectation, then added an option to prevent member replies. So group managers can have it whichever way they want in any given hashtag.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

* Some links to invoices in monthly receipts were incorrect.
* More work fleshing out the API test harness and documentation.
* Pagination in the drafts page was broken.
* For ICS feeds, include all (single) events all the time.
* Number poll responses when displaying them on the website.
* Changing an existing single event to a repeating event didn't work.
* Editing a single event from a repeating event a second time reverted the changes to the repeating event information.
* Fixed issue with changing CC numbers to pay an overdue invoice.

Please call out any you find significant.

Shal

Re: Digest showing only titles or full text

The groups that have been set to 'Force HTML Emails' no longer have a Plain Digest option, only Full Featured Digest. That's what I meant to say earlier, but wasn't quite as clear.

Duane

Re: Photos

Shal,

Thanks. Yes, that's exactly what I was asking (sorry for the confusion). I'll try your suggestion, thanks again!

I'm not sure what you're asking, so if this answer makes no sense I guessed wrong.

The list of group settings on its home page apparently doesn't say whether the group accepts HTML messages or not, nor whether there are photo size restrictions in place. Perhaps it ought.

So possibly the only way you find out is by sending that group a message with an embedded photo.

Re: Digest showing only titles or full text

Hi Duane?

What would be the advantage of having only Daily Digest available?

Re: Digest showing only titles or full text

No, the Daily Summary is just a summary. To get the full text, you'd select either of the Digest options, Full Featured or Plain. Some groups are set up so that only Full Featured Digest is available.

Duane

Re: Digest showing only titles or full text

Does the summary include the text? The subscriber wants to be able to read the messages in the digest without clicking through to the website. Yahoo included the whole text.

Digest showing only titles or full text

Is there a way to set the digest to show only message titles or full text?

Re: Plain text behaving oddly

Frances,

The word "formatting" was in a large bolded font. His signature was
large and red!
I think your member is confused about formatting.

If that word was large and bold then only the member could have done that (I think, not sure if a moderator could change the format by editing in pending). So at least from what I read he WAS NOT posting in plain text.

Some factors I can think of that may apply:

1) How did the member post? Via the group's New Topic or Reply buttons? Via a webmail service? Via a mobile device app? Via an email client on a PC?

2) Has the member set a Signature in his Subscription page? Is it set to HTML? Has he checked the box corresponding to how he posts (1)?

It is probable that having set an HTML signature in the Subscription page, a message the member sent as plain text would be converted to HTML in order to add the signature. But that still doesn't explain how a word in the non-signature portion of his message became specifically formatted. That would seem to give the lie to the member's claim of posting in plain text.

This message, like nearly all of mine, is being posted from an email client in plain text format. I don't have any signature set in my Subscription, nor does GMF force HTML, so I anticipate no shenanigans.

Plain text behaving oddly

Hi

Has anyone seen a complaint that Groups.io is sending fancy formatting in signatures? One group member says that he posts in plain text but when he sees his posts in his email, it is not plain text.?

His email to the group: - my italics.

"Groups.io sure has some funny ideas about formatting¡¡¡. My original message was in plain text."

The word "formatting" was in a large bolded font. His signature was large and red!

Our group is set not to force plain text to HTML. This member is a sophisticated user of technology.

Anyone else seeing a problem?

Frances

Re: Moving an entire thread from main group to subgroup or vice versa

Brian Vogel

Thanks Gentlemen!!

Definitely something worth considering. ?When main group and subgroup(s) are used in an effective hierarchy there can always be times when someone starts a topic in one that might be more appropriate for another.
