Brent,

It will be useful if you can document exactly what is not working. In other words, the steps you are taking and the results / error messages. In case no one on the GMF forum has direct experience with Slack integration,?this information will also be required to submit the issue to groups.io technical support (email: support AT groups DOT io)

See this recent thread on TOC usage.

I suspect a manually-created bulleted list and anchor tags will ultimately leave you less frustrated.

I will try that, thanks!

ive figures out how to make the ¡°table of my topics page¡± but when making a true ToC, what is the first line of garbage that appears in brackets (understand it¡¯s part of the coding for sub heading levels) but WHY????

and can I make it vaporize? ?(Other than white on white text)

Re: Wiki

Yep Ken, this is another case of innocuous inline styles being stripped by the wiki editor upon save. Been there, done that, have already complained about it in beta.

Meanwhile, I've found that I've had more success using deprecated constructs such as img align="center". I believe this still works in all browsers but that could [of course] change someday.

Hope this helps,

The last mention I can find of any problems with Slack was late February last year, .? It was working in late January of this year, /g/GroupManagersForum/topic/9586833.

Members show up as both members and invitees (unaccepted)

Some of the invitees who have joined (possibly not through the invitation process but separately via web or subscription email) are still showing up as "invited" instead of "accepted".?

Where can I suggest that when the IT people get some time there could be a process to check if when someone subscribes that their email address is matched to an invited email address so that this information is updated.

When I shut down my lists on Yahoo:
* banned all existing members;
* unsubscribed all banned members;
* set subscribe to invite only;
* set the list to private;
* Changed the list description to list only the new list URL;

Due to the way YahooGroups was setup at the time, I had to ban the
members, in order to unsubscribe them. Seemed stupid to me at the time,
but such was the state of YahooGroups.

I did not delete the lists.

Roughly five years before I shuttered my lists, several similar lists
closed their doors, with the list-owner deleting them. Within six
months, the list names were re-used, except the topic was pron, rather
than the subject implied by the list-name.

Re: Wiki

Ken,

I wanted them centered but to no avail ¡ª whatever I tried they revert
bank to slammed left margin. Not fatal, but not great.
I had that problem trying to manipulate the code, but I found that the centering button in the WYSIWYG editor works, but seems to require that you include at least a blank paragraph above the image in the selection when you center it. In the code that seems to make the image part of that paragraph. That's probably a bug, or a little nest of them.

Also, you don't necessarily need the revision date on the bottom line, the wiki page has it automatically at the top right.

Re: Wiki

I tried copy/paste a page from a Mediawiki page:

Notice the top of the page links to the actual pdf that the member composed. More on that later. ??

The result wasn¡¯t great. I had to do a bit of reformatting and had to handle the photos individually (upload, place, size, etc). I wanted them centered but to no avail ¡ª whatever I tried they revert bank to slammed left margin. Not fatal, but not great.?

/g/catalina30/wiki/Repairing-an-AquaLift-muffler-%28with-pictures%29

Note That I also link to the pdf. Mediawiki handles media content (pics, pdf, whatever) SO MUCH better than IO. I had to load the pdf into the IO FILES section and link to it. Not ideal (I created a folder something like ¡±wiki content¡± to hold wiki files. I could have linked to the original pdf location, but you know how that goes with future dead links, etc.?

My suggestion is, if you want a serious wiki site with bells and all that, find a place to host MediaWiki and create a permalink to it on an anchored IO wiki page. ?BUT Mediawiki is not WYSIWYG like IO (you¡¯ll need to get used to using wiki markup language). ?

So there¡¯s always loads of trade offs!

Thanks for taking the time to respond,?Vijay. I think it was just a blip that members posted to Yahoo. Maybe returning from holiday. I think the moderating idea will prevent/alert members from posting there much longer.

Go to your group.

Scroll down until you see Delete Group

Hi Michael

I have made a note of your 'instructions' they will come in handy over the next weeks and months. Good idea to keep the 'old' site.

Is it time to close it down completely or will this just happen in due course without input from me? If it's up to me, then how do I go about it?

No need to ¡®close it down completely¡¯.

In the groups I moved I:
-updated the YahooGroups Group Description page (¡°About") to announce the move and URL of the new Groups.io
-put everyone on Moderation (including myself) to prevent new posts on YahooGroups
-turned off YahooGroups Notifications for everyone except myself
-sent out a YahooGroups Special Notice (re)announcing the move, the new URL, and the new posting address
-sent out a Groups.io Special Notice announcing the move, the new URL, and the new posting address

Occasionally someone tries to post to the old YahooGroup, when I get the notification:
- I 'reject their message and reply¡¯ through the YahooGroup reminding them of the move and new posting address
- check that they were moved to Groups.io
- sometimes follow up with a message direct to them

Keep the old YahooGroups - they are a ¡®backup¡¯ archive, in case you discover something missing in the move, e.g. YahooGroups has an Attachments folder in Files, Groups.io does not move Attachments from YahooGroups. YahooGroups Attachments must be downloaded and then uploaded to Groups.io Files one by one, which changes the ¡®ownership¡¯ of the attachment/file if not done by the sender of the attachment.

BTW, Groups.io does keep Attachments attached to Groups.io Messages, which requires posters to use a good Subject line to make it easy to locate, and/or Moderation to Edit, Save & Approval Messages to correct Subject lines.

Re: Closing the Yahoo group

Paul, thank you. I now have changed the welcome message and, indeed, made all messages to be moderated. Such a good idea. I didn't think of that,

Hello Barbara,

We had the same situation with our relict Yahoo group after moving to GIO.

What I did was change the message in the masthead photo on the main page to say that we had moved to GIO and to come see us there.? But I left the YGroup in place as a signpost to our new GIO group.

Well at first that didn't stop a few of the die-hard members from trying to post on the old YGroup so I changed it so that all posts would have to be approved by a moderator AND I also posted a message to the group titled, 'This is the Final Post to CRL' in which I announced (yet again) that we had moved and provide a URL to the new GIO group.

Now in the very rare case that someone tries to post to the old YGroup I get an alert that there is a post needing approval.? Then I reject the post and include? a note giving directions to the member for where to join us on GIO.

We have been moved now since the end of June of this year and the posts to the old group have all stopped now.

I'd suggest just leaving your old YGroup in place as a signpost to your new GIO group but set the old one as inactive so that no one can post to it.

Cheers!

Good suggestion. Thanks. Of course, it takes the same amount of my time for me to unsubscribe them as it does to send them an email referring them to the unsubscribe address. Oh, well.

a list member having trouble unsubscribing

I got a note from a member of one of my lists today. She says she was trying to unsubscribe, but that the unsubscribe website makes it impossible because it demands agreement to the cookies before pushing the unsubscribe ¡°leave group¡± option. I'm not quite sure what this means. I'm assuming she is referring to the unsubscribe link that comes with every message. However, I've never tried to unsubscribe so I don't really know what happens when you do that. In any case I would probably have my browser already accepting cookies from the Groups.io web site so I wouldn't see any message about them.

Has anyone else run into something like this? I went ahead a removed her from the list, but I figured I would ask in case this comes up again sometime.

Jonathan

Re: Wiki

Tom,

Can the same thing be done with a PDF?
While I'm certain you can copy the text of a PDF from Adobe Reader or your web browser or whatever application you use, and paste it into the edit for a group wiki page, I'm far less confident about the formatting and any embedded images.

Also, PDF pages are like cut sheets of paper - each having a specific size for printing. Whereas wiki pages, like HTML pages, are more like scrolls of arbitrary length. Things like having running text in multiple columns is possible in Word and PDF, but basically foreign to wiki and web pages.

So I'd say that while you can get the text there, by hook or by crook, you might be faced with a lot of reformatting work depending on the formatting features used in the PDF file.
