Re: Yahoo now OATH
Larry,
The following message came up: "Yahoo is now part of Oath, the mediaThat Verizon bought Yahoo's internet properties, including Yahoo Groups, and put them under the Oath division is old news. Note that the name Yahoo lives on as a brand name under Oath. So far at least they've not decided to re-brand any of the services. It went on to list their terms of service, etc. That's probably the reason for the notice. Many internet companies have recently revised their terms of service and/or privacy policies ahead of the new law going into effect in most of Europe. If I recall correctly, Oath started presenting a new TOS to users of Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Groups (and presumably other formerly Yahoo properties) several weeks ago; establishing their name as the service provider, replacing Yahoo Inc. My group members are happy with the move ...Some of us here still have an interest in Yahoo-related things (groups hosted there), but I imagine that will continue to dwindle over time. Yahoo now OATH
I just logged onto my Yahoo account to delete my YGroups which have been successfully moved to groups.io
The following message came up: "Yahoo is now part of Oath, the media and tech company behind today¡¯s top news, sports and entertainment sites and apps." It went on to list their terms of service, etc. My group members are happy with the move and relieved we no longer have to deal with Yahoo's total disregard for their customers. Larry W. |
Re: Putting groups.io address on CC line
Bruce,
I'm trying to convince a Y!G that I'm a member of to transfer. InAddressing the group in either the To or CC shouldn't matter to whether you receive the message. Or to whether others receive it either. It's as if I temporarily went into my Account settings and disabledWhat that option does is cause Groups.io to replace the message's Message-ID field when sending it back to you. That's a recent change: it used to replace the field in the copy sent to everyone else as well. This only affects users whose email service (such as Gmail) hides messages from you if you already have them, in your inbox or your Sent folder. Changing the ID makes it a different message. So if you use such a service perhaps you fooled the mechanism, or it has a bug. Or maybe the message was diverted to your Spam or other folder. But I'm betting the message was actually delivered to your email service. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: I have a question [about the Subscription page seen by pending members]
Carin,
Is it possible to change the textNope. You can compose a Pending Subscription notice that will be emailed to the person, but you can't alter the text on the web site. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Member-Notices Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |
Re: Poll results
Randy Thomson
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt appears to me that the only solution to your problem, since the decision of your group is critical to the larger group, is to have an officer of the larger group, or the person trusted with the responsibility of acting on your group¡¯s decision, be a member of your groups.io group, and thereby be capable of confirming the poll results. I assume there is some action to be taken, otherwise why the fuss regarding authenticity. ? This ¡°guest¡± member might not be interested in all the mail of the group, but there are workarounds. The ¡°guest¡± member could have email set to Special Notices Only, and poll results could be sent out as a hashtag special notice. ? Someone please correct me if I¡¯m off the track here. ? Randy T ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Ann ? Thank you.? Yes, I realize my original question was a bit unclear.? The organization that would need the results would accept an email that was sent to the group with the results of the poll.? They are not on Groups.io at all and are an international organization that our group belongs to.? I don't think they would accept a document that an individual created from the results because the possibility of tampering is greater than just forwarding the email that was generated as a result of closing the poll.? Sorry for the confusion. |
Re: Muting a topic
John,
1) Group owner or moderator mutes a topic for all members ORNo. 2) Member can mute a topic prior to receiving an email.Members can mute a hashtag, and that would mute all topics sent with that hashtag. The other option is that members can select following-only (an Advanced preference) and then they receive only the topics they choose to follow. My reason - I want new members to go through the approval processI've no idea what your approval process is, but even a group with open membership has a Welcome Notice that goes to people when they join. You could edit your group's Welcome notice so that it is the start of your process. Having the group set to New Member Moderated (which it must be if it isn't Restricted, Announcement, or Moderated) doesn't mean that you have to wait for the member to post before removing the moderation requirement. In response to whatever process you used following their joining you can preemptively change the new member's Posting Privilege from "Override: new user moderated" to "Default group policy". Once you've done that he/she is no longer subject to the N approved messages requirement. Frances - thanks for your message. ?I have looked at the thread per your suggestion and need to think some about if/how that will work for me.

Re: Muting a topic
John,?
Since you haven't given us much info it's difficult to give you a solution. Is your group restricted? If not, why not make it restricted?? Then you could control new member entry and the process they must go through prior to actually being able to post of view or send & receive email messages. This also is an advantage since you can impose moderation on the new member in addition till you're satisfied they are legit and not out to hack you. My view is that unrestricted groups quickly gather unwanted members. -- Bob Bellizzi The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation |
Re: Archive Transfer
Our archive is about 40,000 messages¡ªhas anyone transferredBy the time I finally transferred my large group we were at about 82,000 messages. Everything came over okay, and of course the Yahoo side of things remained untouched. Mine was certainly not the largest group to move by any means. I would suggest two things: 1) Don't allow posts to the new group until the transfer is complete. Otherwise the new posts get stuck into the old messages when ever they happen to come in to the transferring messages, and so are out of order. Just set the group to moderate all posts until the transfer is complete. When Mark moved my group the system was set up to tell the members they were part of the new group when members were transferred and before all the messages transferred. That has since been changed to avoid the problem. 2) Check for messages with an octothorpe in the title. (#) These will convert to hashtags, even if your group is set up to not use hashtags. They're easier to edit out before the transfer and convert to 'no.', 'number', or such. I'm sure others have other things they've noticed. Dano |
Muting a topic
John Fields
Understand about muting by clicking on the link in an email. ? Is it possible to mute a topic any other way. ?Specifically, two options:
1) Group owner or moderator mutes a topic for all members OR 2) Member can mute a topic prior to receiving an email. My reason - ?I want new members to go through the approval process when they join the group instead of waiting until they want to post something - so in case the owner or moderators are not immediately available. ?I have a topic created that a new member can reply to in order to go through the approval process as soon as possible. ?It would be disruptive for all members who choose to follow topics with individual emails to get an email every time a new member is approved. Thanks, John |
Re: All Day events reminders and notices
Bruce,
Each subscriber account also has its own time zone, and many groupsI believe it does customize the content of the notice to reflect the member's timezone, but I don't expect that it would also stagger the delivery time. That is, the event is considered to have a place and time; no matter where the recipient is in the world that doesn't change - only the recipient's time changes. So, a notice set to go out at the time of the event should go out to everyone at once - but the time of day that is in each recipient's time zone will depend on the recipient's location setting. One could argue that an "All Day" event should be defined as the day in each timezone - effectively a separate event in each timezone. But I think that way lies madness. What happens with Google and other sites that attempt to doGood question. For the most part I only experience Google's calendar from my own time zone, for events in my timezone; so I've never had to wonder about that overly much.
