The thought behind my request was that it would be good for us to have
a record of the side conversations in IO.

What kind of record are you imagining?

One thing would be to have an entry in the group's activity log that gives the basic metadata of the message: who and when, and maybe the Subject line. Notably, the existing Private reply mechanism does not do even that: no activity log entry is created.

A much more comprehensive thing would be to have a message list somewhere that includes the content of the messages.
