(1) Are there any "gotchas" like this ends up being a paid service?
It only becomes paid if you deliberately upgrade your group.

(2) If there are paid levels, what do I get for free?
See the Pricing link at the bottom of every Groups.io page. While you're at it, you may wish to peruse Help and maybe some of the others.

(3) Can I merge two Yahoo groups into one groupio group?
Yes. Just run the transfer procedure (link at the page footer) once for each Y!Group, specifying the same Groups.io group as the target.

An alternative would be to make one group be a subgroup of the other. That would only make sense if the membership of one of them includes all (or substantially all) of the members of the other. There have been some discussions about doing this in the last week or so, search for subgroup in our Messages archive. See also our wiki, which has some articles about subgroups.
