If you have not created a membership for yourself as a normal member of your group, do so. Then use that to leave the group and see what happens. I'm wondering if there is an email sent confirming that you want to leave the group that gives you the option to rejoin or not leave.
You may want to also create a another ID that you make an owner so if anything happens to your normal email, you won't be locked out of your group. You may want to consider making another member an owner should anything happen to you your group(s) won't be left floundering.
I also have a group set up for testing so that I know what members are seeing.

Log shows her leaving six times yet directory shows she's still a member. I manually removed her this morning. Don't know yet if she'll be added back.
I'm the only moderator and, yes, I get all emails. OTOH the only emails referencing this are from her, complaining that she keeps getting added. But there's no confirmation.
